Summer Hopes/Dreams & Plans?

Recommended Posts

Now that it's officially summer, what do you all have planned for your summers? Not just entertainment, but also plans for home improvement or self-improvement projects? Ambitious hobbies? Travel? Tell us what's up. :)

I begin my summer with the Solid Sound Festival, and we hope to have completed the scraping, sanding, and repainting-of-the-eaves project at our house by summer's end. Or much sooner, hopefully. So, some play and some work. Also, my garden is almost completely in (late start) and it's beginning to look lush and green and happy. Soon these squash vines and tomatoes will be running amok.

My summer season started out with a bang. I fulfilled a modest dream last weekend by hiking some of the Appalachian Trail!  Went on my first backpacking trip -- drank out of a mountain stream and everything!  (after filtering the water, that is.)  I'd been planning and preparing for the last several months and the hike went great!

Solid Sound's next on the list for summer fun... and since the AT goes right through North Adams, maybe I'll get another mile or two under my belt.

Have a wonderful time at Solid Sound, everyone! It's not in my budget or family's interests (pick your family vacation plan battles carefully, right? ;)), but someday I'll  make it.

We have plans to go to the Black Hills this summer. A few weekends here and there in Minneapolis will be fun too.

Gardening--last year we wanted something new and thus had our backyard landscaped with lots of flowering plants, and even though we were novices, we did very well with it, even in an extremely dry year (we could use a dry spell now, though--WAY too much rain this spring!).

Lots of time with the kids, reading to them and lots of t-ball and baseball. Because my son is is old enough to move up from the first level of t-ball, the kids will be on separate teams this summer, so we'll be spending quite a bit of time out at the local ballpark!  B)

Alaskan cruise planned for late July. Looking forward to the destination (glaciers national park), but not so sure about the journey -- this will be our first cruise. Hope to be pleasantly surprised.

San Diego Comic Con in July (4 day passes!!!)

And tentative plans for a week in Hawaii towards Labor Day

June is the only lightly planned month. My only goals are beach and bike rides.

My hopes and dreams for the summer are as follows! I hope to find an internship with a NYC Photography studio, which will lead to my dream of getting paid to do that full-time. I also hope to work on another film/music video project in the city. And lastly, both my hopes and dreams are being realized by seeing Wilco and Dylan in July! It's going to be a great summer!

Oh, and one day I dream of going to Solid Sound... not this year!

Alaskan cruises are great. I've been on two, one Norwegian and one Disney, which was perfect for our daughter. Whale watching is a must.

I had a great time 3 years ago. Highlights were drinking Guinness on my late father-in-law's suite's balcony while watching the boat collide with and float over chunks of ice the size of large cars, having the lounge singer stop the show to give me a hug for requesting a Warren Zevon song for the first time in his career and seeing this mama grizzly and her cub.

Going to Memphis for an in-law wedding in a couple weekends, and then another trip and long weekend around the 4th, lakeside in Michigan, and then nothing else major planned until Labor Day, when we make our annual trek to Northern Minnesota for a week nearby Ely. I spend all summer looking forward to that trip, and then when the trip is over, summer's already gone!

I'm hoping to get as much of a draft of a book project done before I go back to teaching in August. It's not going as quickly as I'd hoped, but I still have about 170 pages so far. I've also been exercising a lot more, eating better, and trying to get healthier. I'll be at Solid Sound next week and a few of the Bob-o-Wilco-rama shows in July, but my travel schedule is pretty light this year. I'm enjoying a quieter summer close to home this year. My patio garden is doing really well, too. I should have more tomatoes than I know what to do with in a few weeks!

maybe get one of the two businesses ive been working on started.

get another real gig in the meantime to keep the $$$$ flowing

avett bros at The Classic Ampitheatre which hasn't had an act for like ten years. During the 90s it was the Shiznit including Wilco on one of the HORDES. Its exactly like NTELOS in Portsmouth VA If anyone has been there but the Richmond Raceway has taken over the top edge of the grass area. SO after 10 years they are dusting it off and playing music again. Its a great venue if for no other reason the parking lot holds 100K and the venue is at the front so you just go in and out SO easy

plus Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros next weekend at a bar that's not even sold out yet (in the middle of them doing a bunch of festivals.............I forsee a long rocking show........)

also Iron and Wine and especially Califone at The Capital Ale House which is a WAY too small venue for them to be playing and them also at IOTA in Arlington

My wife bought me a new smoker for my birthday/Father's Day. I'm a long-time griller but have yet to venture into the world of smoking -- so I plan to begin developing that skill.

I also have an oversized antique wheel barrow that my brothers and I bought for my dad several years ago and converted into a rolling drink cart, complete with sheet metal liner and drainage plug. I "inherited" it after he passed three years ago. It badly needs to be sanded, repainted and refinished, and the wheels could use a little greasing. I'm not really a fixer-upper type of guy, but I think I can handle this.

Play some more gigs this summer, like last year.

Most importantly, spend as much time outdoors with my baby girl as humanly possible.

oooh, summer.

  • running and biking all over town
  • a mini-redo of my kitchen (restaining my cabinets and painting plus a few other things)
  • working on my blog
  • running in Hood to Coast in August (!!!)
  • hammock time
  • library time
  • gardening, although i highly prefer the outcome of the garden to the actual gardening work
  • eating fresh veggies/fruit that is so sorely missed in the winter here
