cre618
Of course they will now probably play it at all the remaining shows, but we got it first! From your mouth to Bob's ears....
linclink
That's pretty cool, but I wouldn't expect them to do it at every show. There have been many unique events on this tour (Dark Star, Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, Waterloo Sunset, etc.), and there have also been plenty of nights where Dylan didn't bring anyone on stage. He hasn't established a pattern and stuck with it. Does anyone else think it's kind of funny that on the AmericanaramA tour, many of the covers have been of artists who were not strictly American? Cinnamon Girl (Neil Young, Canada), Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald (Gordon Lightfoot, also Canada), The Band (also partly from Canada). If anything, that's the pattern. They should throw in some Joni Mitchell tunes, too. Yeah the "America" in Americanarama certainly seems to be, at least, about North America, with all the great Canadian cross over...Actually Jeff made a point of speaking of the "Canadarama" aspect at the Toronto show...he pointed it out initially when he brought out Leslie Feist to duet on the achingly beautiful "You & I", then he mentioned it again, as she came back during the section of the show where Richard Thompson was sitting in & they played the old Thompson/Fairport Convention arrangement of Leonard Cohen's "Suzanne" with Jeff & Leslie taking the Ian Matthews-Sandy Denny duet parts & I'd venture even exceeding the original (which is no small achievement)...and finally Jeff announced the finale of the "Canadarama" part of the Americanarama Toronto stop with My Morning Jacket members joining in on their set closing barn burner version of "Cinnamon Girl".I'm really hoping they might continue with the collaborative version of "The Weight" (not that many shows left on the tour), but you never know...I'll be seeing the next three shows & hoping for the best!! Damn, I knew you were going for a few, but that is awesome. I am sure you will enjoy yourself.Don't forget to vote for your requests on wilcoworld.net. I know there was some song off SBS you wanted to hear... You just might get it.
Kalle
Setlist-wise this looks like the best Wilco one of the tour so far. Lots of gems.
imsjry
Typical Dylan, in some ways -- or maybe I'm unfairly judging -- to save a collaboration that a lot of people would love to see for a mid-week show in the most generic of sheds that didn't even open up its lawn section because too few people showed up (around 4,000, I heard, though I bet it was considerably less by the time Dylan went on). Do you honestly think they pay attention and make setlists according to ticket sales or even location? I doubt Bob knows what city he's in most nights ;-)

linclink
Better than Sandy Denny? That's not possible.LOL! OK, OK, point taken, understand & acknowledged!!...cumulatively I do think it was better (Richard played better now than on the earlier track, Wilco > early Fairport, and Jeff & Leslie at least equaled Ian & Sandy- honestly, it was that moving...and like I said that old Fairport BBC version was my fave "Suzanne" ever)...and for the record, if pressed, I might go with Linda Thompson or Sally Timms over Sandy, but not by much...I am more of Richard Thompson fanatic, but I love Sandy Denny & their days in Fairport Convention right up there in that league...and I appreciate your comment, on many levels... You just might get it.Yeah I'm lucking out & am very grateful things are falling my way in these regards. With their original plans to be recording this year, I ended up springing to go to see the two Tweedy solo shows. I visited my Dad in Ohio & pulled off Nelsonville, & there was never any question about Solid Sound- which I think I'm still glowing & gleaming from...I wasn't sure about the AmericanaramA tour...but being a huge Richard Thompson fan, well the collaboration bizznezz got the best of me & I am so glad it did. I went to both Clarkston & Toronto with Thompson on the bill & it was worth every mile driven. I did Darien Lake, as it was near my home...and it worked out for all the shows this weekend- Hoboken, Jones Beach & the dreaded awful venue in Camden (where I've solved that issue by getting a pit ticket- just seeing Wilco there & hitting the road for the drive back home). There's an old friend from Spain is in the U.S. & in the NYC area for the next week, & I've got a free place to stay with friends there being out of town...everything fell together for this weekend, right down to less expensive tickets & great seats...my friend has never seen Wilco, or Dylan, & he's going to Hoboken, at least...since he's checking out of his hotel & coming to stay with me in Brooklyn he said he might use the money to buy tickets for the other shows too...after Camden he's coming back to visit Western NY for a few days, seeing old friends & staying at my place. As far as the requests go...actually the ones I've been hoping for & requesting recently have been..."Deeper Down", & still hoping that someday they will finally do "Sunloathe"..."Open MInd" is another I've yet to hear live & sometimes request, & I'd love full band versions of "What Light" or "Everlasting Everything" someday too...kind of rooting for "Country Disappeared" as well, since it was on the Nelsonville set list, but got knocked off due to the bad weather...guess I better get to work requesting on both my home & office computers!! They are sufficiently popular now that, for the last 7-8 years, I have not been able to get that close to the stage for any of the shows I've seen. It was very cool being on the rail in Tampa. Last time I'd had a similar experience for a Wilco show was 2002!

It's all good though. She sure was...I was recently in an acoustic duo (male & female) & we used to cover "By The Time It Gets Dark" by Sandy...though to be honest, our version owed as much to the Yo La Tengo version as to hers...great singer, great writer, great Spirit... Yeah I'm thrilled that I'll be able to get down close for Hoboken (general admission) & Camden (the pit is about the only solution to such a lousy venue)...and I'll be close enough & seated at Jones Beach- watching the sunset over the ocean, & probably there for the complete show that time too... bböp
Do you honestly think they pay attention and make setlists according to ticket sales or even location? I doubt Bob knows what city he's in most nights ;-)I wasn't necessarily suggesting that — given that Dylan has been playing more or less the same setlist every night (with one or two swapouts), I don't think it really matters to him where they are or who shows up — but I do wonder why he decides on any given night to have Jeff and Jim join him. My understanding of it is that Jeff/Jim don't get that much advance notice; at some point, maybe even once the show has already started, I think Dylan's bandleader or someone must communicate that Bob would like them to sit in that night and then they either are told or decide collectively what they'll play. The songs they've done together thus far probably wouldn't require much rehearsal, at least on Jeff's part, because he knows stuff like that inside and out. The dynamic of performing with Dylan is just interesting to me in terms of how much preparation goes into it and how much notice is given. So I guess what I was getting at with that comment was that at least in the case of VA Beach, which must have been one of the smallest crowds of this tour, maybe Dylan thought it would be an unexpected or confounding place to do something special. Nobody really knows what goes through his head for sure, obviously, but that's what I was getting at. Or maybe he was just in a good mood. Or maybe it's all been planned out in advance and our collective "fate" in terms of collaborations is already decided (but I don't think so)...
Mr. Heartbreak
I'm pretty impressed with the vast amount of material Jeff seems to be able to carry around in his head. I suspect they rehearse relative rarities (try that three times fast) before a show, but man! I can remember Bruce Cockburn, who is an incredible guitarist and songwriter, saying he could only remember about 20 of his own songs at any given time. Jeff seems to be able to carry twice that much without batting an eye.

I posted a small clip of Suzanne here yesterday - http://viachicago.org/topic/49164-americanarama-14-molson-canadian-amphitheatre-toronto-ont-71513/page-3?do=findComment&comment=1531639 I agree Jeff and Leslie really nailed the vocals. IIRC Nels and RT played alternating solos - it was amazing. Unfortunately I don't have all of it, I was trying not to arouse the ire of the security dudes.
