yikescrawford
I spent a weekend listening to all the music Wilco recorded after "Summerteeth" and came up with a list of best to worst, which isn't much real estate to tell the truth. Read the story here: http://www.michaelcorcoran.net/archives/2822
smells like flowers
Interesting read. I happen to disagree with a ton of it, but I had a similar experience when YHF came out. I'd spent a couple of years loving AM and ST (hadn't even gotten to BT yet) when YHF came out. I was pretty immersed in alt-country but when I went to my first Wilco show (July 2002), I was dismayed to hear all these weird sounding songs that bore little resemblance to the twangy stuff I'd come to love. About six months later I saw the "I Am Trying to Break Your Heart" film, then a few months after that saw another live performance that blew me away. That one sealed the deal. froggie
That's about the best description of WTA I've ever heard.I'm sure Jeff Lynne is hiding somewhere in the production of You never know.... and a i love it!
Atticus
really enjoyed this, except I couldn't disagree more with your take on Rising Red Lung. I think it's one of the best songs on the record. When I first tuned my guitar down that low, to where the strings are hanging on for life, and played that melody, it hit me. And the lyrics fit it perfectly. Love, love, love that song. I also think Sunloathe into Dawned On Me is one of the best couplings on all their records.
gr8fulpete
Yikes. I disagree with so much of this, it's almost scary. While there are a couple of things that have some merit -- like the comment that Wilco does not know how to make a bad record -- the rest of the article is pretty far from anything that I would ever expect from anyone who even remotely enjoys Wilco's music. The fact that "Radio Cure," "Walken," and "Forget the Flowers" are all listed as "Extra Baggage" tells me pretty much all I need to know about the piece. [An early indicator should have been the acknowledgment that an AC/DC album was the reason for not listening to Marquee Moon, but I forged ahead.] At any rate, thanks for sharing. But I think posting here was kind of like going to a Cubs game wearing a White Sox jersey.

Guest Don Draper
Really enjoyed this, especially the facts about each album. I'm still not familiar with the back stories yet. I think Black Moon is more of a dead weight than Rising Red Lung. And I love Radio Cure, but I don't know what I would choose in lieu of that. I guess that's a good thing. I like Forget the Flowers but Sunken Treasure kind of plods along to me, especially since I've heard a few live versions that are pretty different/better. "Less Than You Think" isn't excess baggage by itself, but the 12 minutes of gray noise at the end are. I may trim that off for my iPhone. Yes to My Darling. It sounds like something a drunk uncle would get up and sing at the end of an open bar wedding. I would probably choose "Please Be Patient With Me" as the dud for Sky Blue Sky, though. Truthfully, I can't remark on your assessment of Wilco (The Album). I listened to it once, and I really can't get into it - but it sounds like you couldn't either. I've only listened to A.M. once or twice but "I thought I held you by the haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaannnnd" definitely sticks out as a cringe moment for me.
mpolak21
Yes to My Darling. It sounds like something a drunk uncle would get up and sing at the end of an open bar wedding. . Since Jay's death, I have probably listened to Summerteeth way more than any of their other records and this is the only one I still think about skipping.
Guest Don Draper
Some of the production on Summerteeth is affectionately muffled, but My Darling sounds like Tweedy is singing underwater.
spongebob
"Don’t you just hate when musicians put their artistic aspirations above the expectations of their fans?" I stopped reading after this sentence. It might of been irony, but this guy is such a bad writer I couldn't figure it out. Me read good yo......

mr_bellows
I am locked in my basement... watching Austin City Limits right now - have heard of Wilco, but have not had the opportunity to see them play. All i can say is...wow, excellent music; easy to tell these guys have played together for long time. so tight. And what is that music - country mixed with pink floyd lol...its awesome any way i slice it. ACL and wilco remind me of why i have watched this show since i was a kid - excellent musicians playing great music. Is that drummer crazy or what??? fantastic skills and those lead vocals just so...original. Kind of restored my faith in contempory music - ya know? does that sound weird? In any case, i completely enjoyed the concert, and a new fan is born. Thanks to ACL...and a thank you Wilco - great original sounding music, played by excellent musicians. Guest Don Draper
First, a friend texted me around 12:05am to let me know that Wilco was on PBS rightthisminute should I want to watch. I'd been asleep since 9. Second, I like that I've been around here long enough that I can catch on to the Wilco allusions in screen names.
willywoody
I think there is a factual error with regards to AGIB recording. I think protools was only used for demos and anything on the album was recorded and mixed analog. http://books.google.com/books?id=TnaKvFaq3Z8C&pg=PA28&lpg=PA28&dq=a+ghost+is+born+recording+protools&source=bl&ots=fZ-SzRcj--&sig=PnXLKQCSOTV4imM8hjmihwOqM9M&hl=en&sa=X&ei=l2MrUrTTCsz54APBqoDwDw&ved=0CEcQ6AEwBA#v=onepage&q=a%20ghost%20is%20born%20recording%20protools&f=false
The High Heat
Yes to My Darling. It sounds like something a drunk uncle would get up and sing at the end of an open bar wedding. Jay Bennett wrote this song for his niece because he was too broke to buy her a birthday gift! http://www.examiner.com/article/wednesday-wilco-song-spotlight-my-darling
Guest Don Draper
Wow. There absolutely could not have been more pop-up ads on that Examiner page. Interesting to hear the history of the song, though. I found I Am Trying to Break Your Heart on Youtube. A great documentary, btw. When Jay Bennett is fired and they show him performing My Darling solo, it works much, much better (even though I don't care for his voice). The piano and the keyboard on Summerteeth really kill the song for me. And how muddled the vocals are. Together they provide the "drunk uncle" sound, to me. Nice to hear it in a different context where it isn't so "intoxicated," for lack of a better adjective. Also, I always heard "were" as "we've always been a family" as opposed to the past tense. But I shoot unicorns out of my ass, so.

Guest Don Draper
Oh, not a problem, I just don't expect that for sites like Examiner, mostly for sites like petmylolcat.com or whatever.
