Madrone
Only one repeat between last night and tonight: California Stars.
bböp
As was mentioned, just one repeated song over the two nights. Tonight was a great way to cap off the twin bill in SF, especially once the crowd participation got going a little bit in the encore... More to come, but for now, here was the complete setlist as played for Night 2 at the Fillmore: Via ChicagoFar, Far AwayLost LoveAt Least That's What You Said>I'm Always In LoveI MightHesitating BeautyPlease Tell My Brother (aborted)One By OnePlease Tell My Brother (w/"My Two Fathers" interlude)Radio CureArt Of AlmostShakin' Sugar (aka Alone)So Much Wine [The Handsome Family]The Ruling ClassIf That's AlrightRadio KingForget The FlowersSpiders (Kidsmoke)Misunderstood (start performed at edge of stage w/o PA system)------------------------------------Oklahoma U.S.A. Madrone
Wow. Well, attending both nights certainly paid off. I got to see a lot of songs played over the last two nights. Both nights were great, I thought. For some reason to me the second night was more mesmerizing. Though, I was closer to the stage and was attending solo so I am sure that affected my experience. The aborted "Please Tell My Brother" was hilarious. Jeff started the song and got through about 2 or 3 lines of the lyrics when some lady yelled, to my ears, "Golden Smog!!!" Jeff looked up, smirked, and said, "you love this song?" I couldn't tell if he was fucking with her or if he legitimately misheard her. Regardless, he quickly adds, "okay well then I'm not playing it" and he immediately starts into One By One. The whole place was laughing. Then after One By One he smirks again and starts back into Please Tell My Brother. Pretty classic Tweedy.
Madrone
Misunderstood was just stunning. Tweedy had the crowd sing the "Nothing"s at the end of the song and while I am not usually a huge fan of the "sing-a-long" experience this had me with goosebumps. Seriously. bböp
Just to chime in with some more from Banter Corner, etc. *The "My Two Fathers" interlude I referred to was in reference to when Jeff accidentally (?) added an "s" to father in the line "Please tell my father I love him still..." He smiled at the thought and, in keeping with his very quick wit, said something about how it was San Francisco so there probably would be two fathers and kind of mused on the idea about what it would have been like if he'd had two fathers like his father before going back into what he called "the saddest part of the song." It was yet another example of a small moment that makes Jeff's solo performances so enjoyable, IMHO, because it was something that just happened in that particular moment and would be very difficult to recreate (though I'm sure someone will try someday because that's what people do.) *Misunderstood was actually the request of a relatively young boy who was near the front of the stage with his family. Jeff saw him at one point and started talking to him. He said he hoped this wasn't the boy's first concert and asked him which bands he went to see — inevitably, someone in the crowd yelled out "Son Volt" — but the kid eventually replied something like just Wilco and Jeff, I think. Jeff then asked him if he went to see any bands that sound like lighter versions of 80's bands (Jeff didn't name any names, but he advised the boy not to go see "wimpier versions of the Human League." It'd be interesting to know who we was referring to, though I think I can at least hazard a guess.) Anyway, Jeff later asked the kid if there was a song he wanted to hear and, after a while, he came up with Misunderstood and Jeff said he would do it. So that was a fun (and funny) exchange. *Just before Radio Cure, Jeff said, "I'm not going to stop playing quiet songs just because a few people are talking. I'm just not going to enjoy them as much." Apparently there was a group being kind of distracting to his right. He later took a bowl of Cheez-Its that was sort of a running gag from the first night and handed it in that direction with the suggestion the the talkers put them all in their mouths so that they couldn't talk anymore. *Self-deprecating as always, Jeff tried to alleviate the concerns of some in the crowd who might have thought he was talking too much. I can't remember exactly how it came up, but Jeff said, "Don't worry about me talking too much. I'm not going to get in any kind of groove if I keep playing. Some people might think, 'Oh, he didn't get into a flow' (because of the banter). There is no flow." *When someone in the crowd yelled about him playing four nights in LA and only two in SF, Jeff explained that it was because the venue in LA was "like a broom closet" and that more people were actually getting to see him play in SF. He then went into a digression about how SF was the greatest place to play music and basically invented the modern rock audience because of places like the Fillmore and people like Bill Graham. He mentioned how in the dressing room there was a poster for a show with Led Zeppelin, Bonzo Dog Band and someone else I can't remember right now and said how he would have paid a million dollars right now to have a chance to see any of those bands alone, much less on one bill. His point was basically that SF needn't have any sort of inferiority complex to LA. So those were a few of the gems from last night, which made for another highly entertaining evening... remphish1
I would yell why 8 nights in California and none on the east coast
Madrone
Thanks for posting the banter. It was nice to relive some of the hilarity.
gogo
As was mentioned, just one repeated song over the two nights. Wish I could have made it to Night 2! I'm happy with what I got, though. Glad you all had fun!

But sounds like you got a pretty fun show as well! And I'm glad I got to see you, if only for a couple minutes.

GREAT great recap. The third act on that poster Jeff mentioned was Rahsaan Roland Kirk - can you imagine being there...at least "in 1969" per Jeff's caveat?

Yeah, it's hard to imagine some of the bills that one could have seen there back in the day.

rlrs
A few lyric changes for God. I don't believe in Yoda and I don't believe in Garcia which was especially meaningful at the Fillmore.

Jcamp
Scott McCaughey was an awesome opener. From the front row it was easy to see that he was having as much fun as anybody else in the room. Aw Shit Man and Days of Wine and Booze were fantastic. I would've been happy to attend if he was the headliner. . I'm definitely a big fan now. no Ted Fucking Williams this time, but Scott McCaughey shows will definitely be on my radar!
