So it looks like this November is the 20th anniversary of the very first Wilco show. Should we expect a celebration of some sort on VC or elsewhere to commemorate it? I know how all you fan-atics are...

Wouldn't it be lovely to think that we could actually see WILCO again? Maybe they've got something planned. . . she said hopefully.

Would love them to play the same setlist as their first show in celebration somewhere where I can attend :stunned

that'd be great, but it wont happen. at least an acknowledgement around the 17th of the 20th anniversary would be great :yes . hang on, uncle tupelo were still playing around this time now.. not for long though!

Holy crap, I just realized that yesterday, 3/24, was the 20th anniversary of one of my favorite UT shows (Lounge Ax, opened with Chickamauga and ended with Effigy). This is getting weird. :lol

Wish UT would put out a live album. I know they talked about the possibility of dong it. My favorite is one they did on 10/15/93. The sound quality of that show is incredible and the performance was fantastic. I literally listen to it several times a week.

Technically, the first Wilco show was billed as Black Shampoo.

I think Coomer said that they were going to go with that name but their wives/girlfriends hated it. So much of my knowledge of the Wilcos are things from the Kot book or old articles I half remember reading.

Mine too. I think I remember reading they used Black Shampoo for legal reasons -- something to do with their label or not being officially signed yet or something. The other name was American Dust or something awful like that.

That's it. Awful name.

I think the early Wilco had a fascination with bad band names. On the recording of one of the nights at the Fillmore in 1997, Tweedy and Bennett do a "20 Questions with Wilco" from the stage between songs -- must have been questions submitted by the audience. It's really funny. One of the questions was, "what's the worst band name you've ever heard?"  Bennett: "Orange Wallet."

I think I've heard that show, but I don't remember the band names discussion. Maybe it was cut from the version I heard.

That is quite a run of covers: Oklahoma USA, Henry & The H-Bombs, Color Me Impressed, I Wanna Be Sedated, Paranoid and Ziggy. I doubt they did that many covers in a row at a show again until the Solid Sound covers show.

I think the worst band name I've ever heard is Barabbas. Their gimmick was shouting to the audience "who do you want?" and the audience shouting back "Barabbas!" It's immortalized in 24 Hour Party People.

It's this show (the whole thing is awesome) and it's after a quick run through of "Ziggy Stardust." The Q&A starts around the 4:30 mark and is about five minutes long.

Fillmore West May 10, 1997. "If you were invited to a potluck dinner, what would you bring? Ketchup"

It was during this show's performance they launched into 'Dueling Banjos' in the middle of 'Casino Queen'.

I'll start by listening to that first show, and you all should too. Think of how far this band has come.

You are so right. They sound just like a pretty good bar band with a decent  rhythm section. The big difference was all those extraordinary original songs. And, to me anyway, the voice of that lead singer.  :blush So raw and yet direct and warm.
