Wilco — 10/25/14, Raleigh, NC (North Carolina Museum of Art)

Recommended Posts

The view from the reserved seats was perfect, but it felt a little disconnected.  The usual sit/stand bickering was going on especially toward the center section, and it sort of felt, looking down at the pit, like watching some other people have a really great time at a Wilco show.

There really didn't seem to be a sweet spot for this show, unless you're a right-up-front kind of person (I like the sound better a few rows back). In the pit, where I'd normally like to be, you couldn't see the band AT ALL. Back at the lawn, it was way more removed than I'd like, but at least you could see from there. I think the venue was great for its intimate size, but poorly designed for this kind of show.

Standing on the front row was sweet spot for sound IMO. I heard solos on each side of sound system with drums crips and sharp and vocals perfect.

Only trouble was not being able to see final acoustic jam with folks sitting on stage....

It is weirdest setup for a stage and I did see on person take a fall off the back side it wasn;t pretty. I beleive the reason they don't change it was that it is part of an outdoor sculpture. The 200 folks standing on platform probably feel like they had a private show with the band.

That's exactly what it felt like. It was surreal.

I was very self-conscious about blocking the view for so many other people, but what I could I do? I would have gladly stepped off the platform if everyone else would have.

I would have been on platform but my friend wasn't willing to stand there for hour 1/2 so we sat on front row between Tweedy and Nels

I expect the sound and view from center lawn would have been the sweet spot bringing a picnic basket of food and hangin out with bottle of wine till show time. But what a treat to see them in small place and even more unique for the PLATFORM FOLKS> Tweedy " you guys are really close"  THe stage is only a foot or two above the platform so they were almost eye level in the front row. Classic Wilco show IMO.

I don't begrudge anyone who was on the platform! I'm sure it was amazing to be that close to the band. My friends and I had the chance to stand up there, but there were 5 of us and when three left to get food/drinks, we got squeezed toward the edge and I was worried I'd be the one to take a dive! Hope the person that did fall wasn't hurt.

Did anyone see the guy with a monopod and 35mm camera filming video. he was on back of platform for several songs and wondered if he was with wilco or getting lucky with the slack security. I watched his camera monitor and he was getting closeups Not teh best way to record sound but his images where looking incredible.

You and your Leica... :thumbup

Great shot, sir! Who said you weren't shooting? :ninja :ninja :ninja

Thanks. Yeah, I did not 'shoot' this show. I did, however, take a few snaps. Leica indeed, one cannot go wrong. This was a fantastic show. We were 'platform' people and it was quite literally like standing on stage in front of the mikes. I've been as close, but rarely that elevated when that close (unless actually on stage). Awesome. There are more pics, but all fixed vantage point, fixed lens, so minimal variety. Nevertheless, I may have a few decent frames ;) Check out my instagram for another and maybe some more...

As I live just down the road from this particular venue, I have been to many shows at NCMA. This was certainly one of my favorites. A great night. I agree with those that noticed that they didn't really seem to be in the mood to jam. Some of the most concise versions of tunes I've heard them play. Particularly Spiders... and I have heard them play several "acoustic"  versions before.

I'll also mention that as it was a beautiful afternoon that day, we took the dog over for a walk around 3pm with the hope of possibly catching soundcheck. And totally lucked out. Quite fun and not a lot if folks were around to hear it... She's a Jar, Either Way, Pot Kettle Black, Kamera, Kicking Television, Misunderstood (acoustic), California Stars (acoustic). Hard to call the last two full run-throughs. Seems they were mainly just getting themselves on the same page and holding a lot back for later.

7 song soundcheck! If you looked through the trees you probably got to see it too! Nice! I've only been able to hear them do one soundcheck before. It was in Charlottesville last year (or was it the year before?). Just two songs. It was really fun but short. 7 songs is almost like a tiny show in itself.

i remember hearing New Madrid during a soundcheck in 2007, but they didnt play it. mountain bed and poor places were done too, and they played them. but we did get a solo acuff-rose at the end instead, so that was a nice long sound-check. the whole of SBS twice over with the other 3 rarities!

I'm over a week late to add my comments, but I'm not aware of a rule about that.

Wilco show #54 for me. The setlist is up there with the best of them. The Being There and Hootenanny encores were so great. I found the 4 strong stretch of Track 1's (Either Way>Break Your Heart>Art of A>At Least) interesting and was hoping for Must Be High. As seems typical, a slow building set.

We had seats in the reserved area which was awesome - perfect sight lines for all musicians and flexibility to arrive at 8pm. Loved that.

Has anyone else ever noticed that Glenn's arms look to be in slow motion during this Spiders. His lower body does most of the work and it is unbelievably fun to watch.

There is a nice recording of Raleigh available over at Etree. And I am seeing the others shows as well but look forward to the Roadcase release if they do all the shows. you could pick and get their entire catalogue covered live especially after the Chicago WInterlude which my daughter will be checking out on 1st saturday night.
