Wilco — 2/11/16, Atlanta, GA (The Tabernacle) [Night 2 of 2]

Recommended Posts

For the penultimate headlining show of what has been a fairly long tour by current Wilco standards — and before a surely welcome off day — the band largely stuck to the template it has established in recent weeks: Star Wars, greatest hits, hootenanny.

If there was anything I detected tonight, perhaps it was an early loss of concentration on Jeff's part. I counted three separate minor stumbles during the performance of Star Wars, which has rarely happened that I've noticed. Maybe he really was distracted by the audience member he pointed out to his right who apparently had a large Band-Aid across his forehead. Briefly halting the start of I'm The Man Who Loves You, Jeff explained that during just about every show he becomes so fascinated by someone in the crowd to the point that he can barely focus enough to do his job and, tonight, this man was the subject of his interest. "Are you OK?" Jeff asked. "Was it the world's worst shaving accident?"

Or maybe Jeff was distracted by the presence of a celebrity in the house — noted Wilco fan Jon Hamm — who apparently attended the show (and by one account, outshone the band at its own aftershow).

Other than the brief struggles during Star Wars, though, Jeff performed pretty well for the rest of the show. He turned in some pretty fierce guitar work on the electric Spiders, which seemed like a likely candidate to kick off the post-SW set after it had been cut on Night 1 (à la in Boston). I have to say, it was interesting hearing it at that point in the set. It got an already-juiced crowd even more into the show for sure, but was also kind of abrupt, coming off the hymn-like quality Magnetized.

In terms of Banter Corner, other than the aforementioned interaction with Band-Aid Man, pickings were next to nil. The best that I can offer is Jeff's post-Hummingbird quip about how this audience was "so much better than those assholes last night." Then, "You're all the same people, aren't you? Dammit."

Hate It Here was a bit of a surprise in the hootenanny, and Space Oddity continues to be an excellent way to wrap up the show. I wonder if the latter will remain in the set beyond this tour, so enjoy it while it lasts.

Looking back, this was one of those rare cases when I actually preferred the first night of a two-night run. Despite the strong Being There representation with Sunken Treasure and the main set-ending "Rock Songs, etc." trilogy, I just personally got a little bit of a better vibe from Night One. Tonight, around me at least, there were just a few too many tipsy ladies, loud+bad singers and chatterboxes for my taste.

I'm sure others will disagree with my assessment, but to each their own, I guess. Onward to...uh...Roanoke! B)

Here was the complete setlist, as played, for Noche Dos at the Tabernacle (from a brief glance at the printed list, it appears that It's Just That Simple was crossed out in the encore and Space Oddity was added despite not being listed):

I kinda thought last night was more fun. The crowd around me last night was markedly better behaved than night 1 except for the guy on my right yelling "Land Ho!" at Jeff a couple times. That was dumb. I dunno why people insist on telling stuff at the band at shows. The excitement around where I was was fantastic during the loud rock parts.

Electric "Spiders" was so good. I'm glad they played it.

Also "Star Wars" is a ton of fun live. It's every bit as enthralling as the album is, except with the great benifet of being louder (unless you've got humongous speakers!). One thing I noticed last night was during "Where Do I Begin", Pat plays guitar too sort of doubling Jeff's solo chord bit at the beginning, and he was really having to watch Jeff, I think Jeff maybe started a little fast. I loved being able to see the chord changes for a lot of the songs and I was trying to take mental notes of them to try at home.

Every Wilco show I see is better than the last one. I'll never be disappointed in anything they do on stage cos they do it so well.

I got a set list last night thanks to Matrix, so I'll post it when I get home tomorrow.

Also the poster was really nice, a good compliment to the previous nights.

Also, very fun to hang out with a few VC folks (dagwave(hope you didn't run away and join Girlpool!) and theashtraysays) apologies to a few people I hoped to see but didn't. After the show things got a bit crazy.

I sure hope we don't have to wait a long time for Wilco to get back down south. It's always a good time when they do.

Such an amazing two nights at the Tabernacle.  I couldn't really pick a favorite as both nights each had so many amazing aspects.  Pretty happy to have experienced my 19th and 20th Wilco shows on my home turf.  Overall, I thought the crowd was pretty great both nights.  There were a few annoying drunks here and there, but luckily they all appeared to be big Wilco fans and were mostly dancing and woo'ing as opposed to chatting, at least up front where we were.

Here's the printed setlist, the Space Oddity lyrics and one of Pat's picks we scored.  As has been pointed out, It's Just That Simple was skipped and Space Oddity was tagged onto the end.

I was there last night, but not the first night. I thought the show was fantastic. The audience was much better than is normal for an Atlanta show. The band was clearly having fun. Having front row seats on the balcony gave me a clear view of what everyone was doing, and watching all the shit Glenn does was mind boggling.

I have to say that was one of hell of a show. Great energy and the crowd was surprisingly well behaved. Hope this set gets a Roadcase release. After so many shows I believe this was one of the most fun for me and the acoustic encore was perfect. I've got some good video - Passenger, Shot and Space Oddity that I'll post at some point. Cheers y'all

Went to both nights, and loved them both.  I was pleasantly surprised by the variation in the set mix, perhaps due to low expectations.  Spiders after Star Wars was a great kickoff.  The current incarnation of Sunken Treasure is great, and Nels has crafted himself nicely into it (a la Ashes of American Flags).  That was my night 2 highlight.  The encore set had fewer repeats, and Passenger Side and Casino Queen are a lot of fun in that acoustic set.  Same for Hate it Here.  Lots of good singalong fun once again on night 2.

Jeff seemed to have a bit of a cold, with more than a few nose swipes.  He gave us a couple "I can't hear you!" calls for more applause at one point, to which we all obliged, and then capped it with "no, really, I can't hear anything".   But he sounded great nonetheless, and you sure couldn't tell there was anything wrong on the "OK, ALRIGHT"'s at the end of the main set.

I noticed that Mikael is doing a robot / auto-matron move during HMD which is a must-see.  And yes, Glen still twirls his stick.

I'm with bbop in that I liked night 1 a little better, but for an entirely different reason (BBN).  Both were great shows, great crowds, and a fun vibe.  Really enjoyed getting to see old and new friends, including my first introduction to the legendary Jesse Hamm (JHamm, I assume no relation to Jon) of the DVD Project by bbop himself.  Had great fun exploring the area around the Tab with Dagwave "after hours".

Hope to see everyone again soon!

Night two was again solid (not that I expected it not to be given how great the band is), but night one was probably my favorite. The crowd around me (toward the back because I arrived a little later than expected) was pretty chatty. I was hoping to meet a few VC'ers while in Atlanta, but it didn't happen. That'll probably be the last of my Wilco experiences this year because they just played NOLA last fall. I think I preferred that show to either of the Atlanta shows (it was actually one of the best Wilco shows I've ever seen), but I still had a fun time in Atlanta. For lagniappe I had a chance to catch up with several old friends from high school and college who now call Atlanta home. That's probably what made the trip for me though it sure was nice to catch a show at The Tabernacle again.

  • 2 weeks later...

Very long time since I've been on VC and thought I'd chime in.

With the utmost gratitude to the Wilco family (you know who you are!), me and my family made it to this show. Ran into SarahC and her husband walking down the street in Atlanta, which was a real treat! Then talked to Paul and Vince in line for a few minutes. Good seeing you guys! Sorry I couldn't stick around longer. Back problems!

I don't know how many times I've seen Wilco. Not a clue. But I'd put this show down as one of my favorites so far! Sounded amazing! All the new songs were as good or better in concert than they were on the record. I loved seeing the Red-Eyed and Blue and I Got You combo again. Made me feel a bit nostalgic.

I enjoyed the unplugged encore as well! I'd kinda like to see that turned into a tour in and of itself some day!

A great show, all around! Glad we made the trek and beyond grateful that we had the chance to see the best band in the world today!
