Glad someone outside the country music establishment won that honor. Bro-country and all the crap played on the radio should be killed. With fire.

Spent the weekend listening to Sturgill Simpson's latest, Sound and Fury.  Holy crap!  Has there been an artist that's put out a more diverse first four albums?

This one is, as he describes it, a ‚Äúsleazy synth-rock dance record."  There's nothing even remotely country about this album, aside from his deep Kentucky accent (which is buried under heavy guitars and "sleaze" on many tracks).

Apparently there's also an anime film that was produced along with this album -- because why not?  :lol

One of my favorite tracks is called "Make Art Not Friends" and pretty much sums up the ethos behind this album.

I love saying "no" to all the "yes" men

Just to see the look on their face
I love how everybody knows what's best
But nobody knows their place
Sucker every second, stack 'em up to the sky
For every winner, there's a hundred that died
So you get yours, and stay outta mine
Here's to the memories, where do I sign?

Face in the mirror, all skin and bones
Bloodshot eyes and a heart of stone
Never again, I'd rather be alone
Think I'm gonna just stay home
And make art, not friends

I have no idea how he's going to top this, but I'm excited to find out.

Mercury in Retrograde is one of the best songs I've heard in a long time. Does anything capture the current zeitgeist better than:

The road to hell is paved with cruel intentions

If its not nuclear war

Its gonna be a divine intervention

I haven't heard it yet, but I don't know how he's going to top the bouncing a hotdog off the forehead of a bully story he told on the Joe Rogan podcast.

Yes - it's on Netflix right now. Watched the first three or so songs.

I've only listened once. It's a great album. I feel like I got a preview at Iowa's Hinterland Festival in August 2018. His keyboardist was sick and the played like a power trio with some wild extended guitar solos. Noisy and angry as hell.

I'm intrigued. Any idea what episode this is or where to find it?

It's the most recent episode, as of last week.  I'm not very familiar with Joe Rogan's podcast, or how often he posts episodes, but I listened to this one the other day.  It's long, and this story is near the end.

Edit:  Actually, it's from September 30 and it looks like he's been very busy podcasting since then.  http://podcasts.joerogan.net/

Thanks. Went to search on youtube, turns out Sturgill has been on his show quite a few times.

Sound and Fury was very different. His last few records always made a lot of critical year end lists, but I don't know if I saw this one on any - and, no, that doesn't mean an album is good or not - just a big change in reception for this one.

I loved S & F! Really bummed the tour imploded before it got to the northwest but couldn't be helped. Sturgill has turned into 1 of those guys who keeps things interesting by constantly changing. Looking forward to what comes next.

I saw him summer 2018. It was a serious power trio rock show. Lots of extended solos, furiously loud rock and roll. Not at all what I expected, but it did seem to set the stage for Sound & Fury.

Would love to see him again.
