Really? This place is actually where I find out pretty much everything I know about new music. If not for the fine citizens of VC, I'd be stuck with my 8-track of Charlie Rich.

putting together the timeline of the world's best band
Mr. Kinsley replied to mastershake's topic in Someone Else's Song
Here's how my timeline would look: Beatles ---> Stones ---> Led Zeppelin ---> The Police (for a brief but shinning moment in early 80's) ---> U2 ---> Nirvana ---> Reclaimed by U2 after some brief claims to the crown by Pearl Jam for a year or 2 and Hootie & The Blowfish for about 3 or 4 days Currently nobody has more cultural relevance than U2 and Radiohead. They seem sort of tied for the title now. After the heyday of '63 - '77, things got a lot murkier. The point about Jay Z was well stated; is the big rock band still relevant? Radiohead doesn't even have a label -

Not really any argument there, but they do look like a baseball team now. That old green, purple, yellow crap they had before was horrible. The hats look like the Rangers with an extra B thrown on just for fun.

Mikael appears to be prepared for yacht rock night. Nels looks like someone from Culver City who's been forced to take a picture outdoors in Chicago in the winter.

Which makes your holiday avatar somewhat ironic.

Wow. They actually look like a major league baseball team now. Not the greatest logos in history, but a gargantuan improvement over the old crap.

What are everyone's predictions for the Mitchell Report coming out on Wednesday? I guess it seems obvious that since the Mets clubhouse guy and Jason Giambi both "chatted" with the former senator, that the list will be heavy on New York-area names with a few from Oakland sprinkled in for good measure. Of course, since the Dodgers just picked him up, Andruw Jones is a lock. Just our luck. Actually, with his recent numbers, it wouldn't surprise me at all. We just got rid of Luis Gonzalez who was probably fairly juiced-up around 2001. Since his big 56 homer year he's had warning track power. Oh

Wow! I'd never heard of that. I thought I was alone on my own little uni-obsessed island. Apparantly not only am I not alone, there's definitely a lot of people who are way more into it than I. I'll have to dig through that site to see if they have the Sports Illustrated article from about 20 years ago or so on the White Sox uni's history. I remember a fold out centerfold timeline showing all the various incarnations over the years. Also, anyone (bobob?) know what's up with Tampa Bay? I thought they were changing their name, logo, and colors. Whatever happened there?

Team uniform designs have always been a big deal for me. When I was still doing graphic design I had an interview with the firm that designed the Patriots logo. Damn that would have been my dream job! So, with that said, I'm diggin' the Phils jerseys, mainly because it's an alternate. For everyday it would suck. The Royals jerseys look great, but are they going to wear them with white pants? After seeing them in all light blue for all those years in the 70's & 80's, it looks like a mistake. Y'know what team really disappoints me uni-wise? The White Sox. They used to change up their lo

Just curious, those of you who started drinking coffee at an insanely young age - how tall are you? People always say that coffee will stunt a kid's growth, so... did it? Also, it's kind of funny that this thread came up now. Just the other day I had a Dr. Pepper and then later a Peppermint Mocha at Starbucks, which I forgot to order as decaf. I didn't even bother going to bed at my usual time and instead stayed up goofing off around here. The next day I had a horrible headache, was totally dragging and just wanted nothing more than either a nap... or more caffeine. I decided to tough it ou

I was in Jr. Hi at the time and I remember it distinctly. Unfortunately my sentiment at the time was, "Hey, sorry he died but what's the big deal?" I understood why someone being killed was a big deal, but I had no real frame of reference as to just how important he really was to society as a whole. I was really just starting to get into music that wasn't whatever crappy 70's soft-rock schlock my parents happened to have on the car radio. As I started to dig deeper I began to realize why so many had been affected so deeply. As for Chapter 27, I think it really depends on how well it's done.

I'm expecting a huge backlash on this ("You LA people are a bunch of freaks! That's not a pizza!") but back when the Lakers were rollin' over everyone a few years ago, another couple and my wife and I would get together for Jacopo's and watch the games. We'd order what we grew to name The Laker Pizza, which I think is really called the Buffalo Wing pizza. I haven't had it since and I miss it. Sounds horrible, but you've got to trust me on this: Thin crust with a ranch dressing sauce, sliced red onions, cilantro, mozzarella, and buffalo chicken wing seasoned chunks of chicken breast. You do

Today is the 1825 day of the rest of my life

Good for you for stepping up and getting help. Too many people are needlessly embarassed about mental problems. Would we think differently of someone with a heart problem, or maybe cancer? Brains shouldn't be any different. -
Jeff smashed a guitar on stage before? Wow! There must have been a ton of talkers at that show!

Hey, I just found out that this year's acoustic Christmas will be webcast at 5 pac time on Sat and Sun. Night 2 is probably the only one of interest around here, with Spoon, Shins, Modest Mouse, and Feist. Bad Religion is a perenial favorite there, playing night 1. They did the most amazing punk rock version of Silent Night about 10 or so years back.

Ohh... duh! It's a very good sign that nobody here even thought of her. -
You can't back a wounded and dejected marlin fan into a corner like that and expect him to chuckle. Times like these they are at their most dangerous and are liable to poke you in the eye with that... that... big pointy thing on the end of their nose.

Yeah, I just got off the phone with my dad a little while ago to make sure he didn't take Grandma to that mall today. They were fine; don't usually go there. I've never lived in NE, but I've spent a fair amount of time there, especially out in western Neb. Kinda scary. At the high school out there every truck (no cars out there) had a gun rack in the back window with a loaded weapon of some sort. Omaha isn't exactly a backwater ranching town, but they do seem to like to wear their lack of sophistication as a badge of honor. I can totally see where a kid out there who doesn't conform to the n

That's a solid rule. That's also a supremely lame incentive. All he has to do is find one sleazy reporter (difficult?) and he's got close to a million and the report gets a chunk too. Maybe less cynically, a reporter just genuinely likes Curt (it could happen) and wants him to get the cash despite a so-so season, so he throws him a bone with a third place vote. Maybe even a first place vote. Crazier things have happened.

Bum Porn Not a bad band name. Maybe to just kick it up yet another notch on the offensiveness chart we could instead go for Homo Hobos?

Really? Now that truly is random Canadiana. -
Even if A Christmas Carol (the old version with Alister Sim as Scrooge) had been on the list, I still would have said Wonderful Life. Carol would have been #2, though.
