  1. Or "the 'Canes." Or "those fucking bastards I hate." (Also applies to Florida State)
  2. If Tweedy ever dressed like that, I'd probably have to stop listening to Wilco.
  3. Is that anything like red beans and rice?
  4. I don't have my poster anymore either. The first Beatles album released while I was alive. Though I'd been a fan since early on, it took me until seventh grade or so to really start getting into the Beatles. I had a friend whose older brother had all the records. We would play those things to death, and we played the White Album more than any of the others. Whenever I listen to the album these days, I associate it with the house my friend lived in back then, and us blasting "Happiness Is A Warm Gun" (among others) on the living room stereo.
  5. My best friend lives there. I haven't seen too much of it, but his neighborhood is nice.
  6. Hard to tell whether that was Michigan being better than expected or UCLA being worse. Preseason rankings being what they are (i.e., basically worthless), #4 may have been overly generous for the Bruins.
  7. from Andrew Leonard on Salon.com: Worst of all possible bailouts? The Associated Press is reporting that a bipartisan group of senators has come up with a compromise deal to keep beleaguered U.S. automakers afloat, although it is unclear whether the full Senate will pass it. Worst of all possible bailouts? So the plan is to take money aimed at giving the Big Three a fighting chance to compete in a world where climate change and declining fossil fuel resources are immense challenges, and use it just to keep G.M., Ford and Chrysler from declaring imminent bankruptcy. If ever the phrase
  8. There's a pretty decent(!) cover of "Revolution 9" on an EP called Rev9 by a band called The Shazam. They made it surprisingly musical.
  9. Saw this earlier. My father sent me the link and wondered if this might point toward Wilco playing the inauguration. I told him we'd already beaten that subject to death.
  10. Here's my single-LP White Album: SIDE 1 (23:38) 1. Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Monkey 2. While My Guitar Gently Weeps 3. Martha My Dear 4. Savoy Truffle 5. I Will 6. Glass Onion 7. Blackbird 8. Happiness Is A Warm Gun 9. I'm So Tired SIDE 2 (24:13) 1. Back In The U.S.S.R. 2. Dear Prudence 3. Honey Pie 4. Julia 5. Why Don't We Do It In The Road? 6. Sexy Sadie 7. Mother Nature's Son 8. Revolution 1 I surprised myself with some of my choices. For example, "Honey Pie" and "Why Don't We Do It In The Road?" made the cut while "Birthday," "Rocky Raccoon," and "Bungalo
  11. For some reason the web filter here is blocking this. Can someone post that tracklist?
  12. Freddy Adu scored a gorgeous free-kick goal in the CONCACAF qualifier against Guatemala last night -- his first goal as a member of the top national team. Anyone else watch that match? The foul that led to Adu's goal resulted in a yellow, but it should have been a red -- the Guatemalan defender screwed up, got badly beaten on a through ball, and simply pulled down the American striker from behind as he entered the penalty area on a breakaway. Where I come from, that's an automatic red, but the match ref saw it differently somehow. The U.S. looked pretty good overall, and I was happy to see
  13. This is demonstrably false. Careful with that word "requires." I would argue that an optimal first baseman is just as athletic as a second baseman (or shortstop, or any other player). The fact that not all first baseman are that athletic reflects calculated gambles on the part of managers, not what sort of athlete is best suited to a position. You're assuming that sticking a lummox at first is a reasonable move. I am not making that assumption. Further, I would suggest that you could stick a John Kruk-sized guy at second and assuming he was competent enough to play first (and right-handed
  14. Wait. Are you saying that first basemen never have to range to their right to field sharply hit grounders, then throw toward first while their momentum is carrying them away from the bag? Factor in, also, that an awful lot of first basemen are left-handed, and that throw gets even harder -- oh, and it's to a moving target (the pitcher running over to cover). I still agree strongly with the initial point that Jules made -- that 2B is not really a "much more difficult position" than 1B.
  15. It could be worse. It could be Bill Walton.
  16. Perhaps it's an allusion to the fact that UT has far and away the largest endowment of any public university in the country.
  17. I prefer Adblock. That way I can still read your posts.
  18. Did anyone catch some of the Richmond-Syracuse game on ESPN last night? I only ask because this telecast indicated that ESPN has again decided to insult its viewers -- even more than they already do simply by employing Bill Walton. During this game, there was a ribbon at the top of the screen that scrolled viewer comments that had been entered on the ESPN website. So while you're watching the game, you're subjected to the moronic ravings of the frat boys at the two universities. It's as if you're watching MTV. I think they're calling this new "feature" something like "Tuesday Night Int
  19. Did anyone ever determine what breed these little guys are?
  20. Yeah, but it's rather warmer in the fall/winter than Ann Arbor.
  21. I agree, but I thought it went south way earlier than that. We loved the first season, but by the middle of the third season we just didn't care about any of the characters anymore. We never even started the fourth season. (Your post was the first time I'd heard that there even was a fifth season.) That said, these days I watch both Dexter and Dirty Sexy Money, so I still keep up with the Fischer brothers.
