I used to read this guy religiously. AP story, via SI.com Longtime baseball writer/historian Jerome Holtzman dies at 82 CHICAGO (AP) -- Jerome Holtzman, a longtime baseball writer who made the Hall of Fame, created the saves rule and later became Major League Baseball's official historian, has died. He was 82. Holtzman died Saturday in Evanston. "As a baseball writer, columnist and historian for more than 50 years, Jerome Holtzman was a beloved figure and made an incredible impact on the game," Commissioner Bud Selig said Monday in a statement. Peter King said in his column today (part of which discussed the Taylor deal) not to be surprised if Shockey ends still ends up with the Saints. I don't think he expected it to happen this quickly.

I don't think the Drumstick would hold up very well during shipping. Unless you pack it in dry ice or something.

EW's List of the 100 "New Classics" (books since 1983)
cryptique replied to redpillbox's topic in Tongue-Tied Lightning
Interesting that they included William Gibson's Neuromancer, but not Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash. I only skimmed the list long enough to notice that Gibson was on there but Stephenson was not. Aside from that ... it's Entertainment Weekly, and no one should care what they say ... about anything. -
I don't think I'll be getting my hopes up for 2009. Especially for anywhere but Chicago.

I don't think there's anything that would be a modern-day equivalent of a Beatles/Stones collaboration. -

That link's for yesterday's stage. Stage 12 just now finished... (spoiler)

Riccardo Ricco tested positive for two banned substances, and his whole team withdrew (Saunier-Duval Scott). He had been wearing the king-of-the-mountains jersey and had won two stages before his positive test.

I'm totally into the Tour this year, drugs be damned. Stage 12 is about to finish, and it should be a sprint -- I just wish I were home watching it on TV.

More like taking shots at the media that feel compelled to mention his troubled past every time he's in the batter's box. It's a fantastic story ... but we've all heard it 5,000 times now. Can we just let the guy play baseball?

Who's crying in their (piss) beer now? By Edward McClelland Jul. 17, 2008 | I did my heaviest drinking before I turned 21. I had the motivation: I was spinning my wheels in community college. I had the opportunity: My best friend was already losing his hair, so he never got carded. And the gas station in my neighborhood sold a beer I could afford on my $3.35-an-hour video clerk's salary: Falstaff. -

I could have written that same post, Kevin. You're a textbook introvert like I am. At least you've tried to gain control and re-establish some ties -- I've been avoiding that for years ... decades, really. So, um, yeah ... I know where you're coming from.

Post of the day. Sad. Page has had his demons over the years -- but most of them were legal. I'm a pretty big fan of the band, though I haven't thought much of their last couple of albums. Page is one of the best pure singers out there (especially for live shows), though his voice can be an acquired taste. -

Yeah, you need to sign up, and I'd rather not. Is there anything juicy in there that wasn't covered in the synopsis above? The thought of Neil and Jeff working together is frighteningly awesome. They're two of my favorite songwriters and singers of all time. -

Dubuque Star longnecks were $5/case at the local Food 4 Less, and sometimes on sale for less, if I recall correctly. It wasn't horrible beer, either. Way better than Milwaukee's Best and all the other cheap swill. -
Cheese is pretty hardy stuff; I think it'll be fine. Unless it's cottage cheese, or something like that.
