I'm not sure that would be my choice for the best display of Mitchell's prowess, but he was a mind-blowing drummer. He actually sounds a bit restrained on that track -- though his fills do work perfectly for the song. A dark horse nominee from me as "best thing put to record by any drummer, ever" (rock genre, anyway) would be Mike Musberger's work on "How She Lied By Living" by the Posies. Obscure song by a fairly obscure band, and maybe not the flashiest thing ever, but what his drums do for that song is unbelievable. It's a study in how a thoughtful and very creative drum track can compl

How Baseball is Rigged for Lefties

Yeah, clearly that list is messed up. I wonder if MLB.com only has stats going back so far. Rogers has been around so long, maybe his earlier pickoffs were before that cutoff. -

You're right about lefties ... that just shows that I can't assume anything about a statistic based on my personal observation. However, Kenny Rogers is only tied for 30th on the all-time list. The top 11 on the list are all left-handed. Jamey Wright (tied for 12th) is the top right-hander. It's amazing how many of the pitchers on that list are still active. Makes it seem like pickoffs weren't much of an art until recently. I wonder, though, how far back the stats go -- maybe they didn't bother to record them before the last few decades? -

It wasn't a bet, but I would love to see some stats on this. Just going from my own memory, I've seen a heck of a lot more pickoffs by righties than lefties. -
How Baseball is Rigged for Lefties

I don't know about now, but when I was a kid it was virtually impossible to find a left-handed catcher's mitt. Off the top of my head, the only such mitt I've ever even seen belonged to Mike Squires, who played a couple of innings as catcher for the White Sox long ago. I think the point about "getting going" is wrong. Yes, a right-handed batter is swinging across his body and his arms are moving away from first base at the conclusion of his swing, but if he's in a solid stance, his lower body doesn't turn away from first base very much, and it seems to me that he's actually in a somewhat b -

You haven't even seen all the replies that were Bcc'ed. -
I love 'em all, and I have a hard time understanding what people don't like about The Shepherd's Dog. "Resurrection Fern" is absolutely gorgeous. I'm not the kind of person who puts a single song on repeat, but I've done it with that song.

I believe I also recall reading about a glitch that occurred when you didn't put anyone in the "To:" line, which yielded similar results. That's why it's a good idea to always send the message to yourself (as the "To" recipient) and Bcc everyone else. As with the aforementioned glitch, I would guess this has also been fixed, but better safe than sorry. -
Fill in the Blank II -Best cover Songs/Versions
cryptique replied to dagwave's topic in Someone Else's Song
Every time this thread comes around (again), I have to plug the Posies, the kings of the cover version (and damn fine songwriters in their own right). Their version of the Germs' "Richie Dagger's Crime" is still an all-time favorite of mine. They've also done great versions of "Ooh Child," "Surrender," "Song of the Baker," "Every Christian Lionhearted Man Will Show You," "Lady Friend," "What the World Needs Now," "I Am the Cosmos," a slew of Big Star songs, and many others. -
I got the result I wanted: Baker pitches seven scoreless innings (he's on my fantasy team), but the Twins lose ground to the White Sox.

Just wanted to add that this technique works for virtually every e-mail system, not just Yahoo. I said "virtually" only because I suppose there might be some ass-backwards utility out there on which it doesn't work, but I'm not aware of one. -
So, Sabathia and Prince Fielder on the same team, eh? All across Milwaukee the proprietors of all-you-can-eat buffets are quivering with fear. (I get to crack that joke because I'm bigger than either of them.) I don't think Sabathia gets the Brewers over the top, but I can certainly understand them wanting the guy. I wonder if they gave up too much to get him, though.

Dye is the obvious choice, in my opinion. He should have been on the team anyway without having to go through this BS.

Honestly, I'd recommend the whole catalog. If you want the more acoustic stuff, try The Creek Drank The Cradle. If you want full-band stuff, it's hard to beat the latest one, The Shepherd's Dog.

It's weird, because it only affected my work PC, not my home one. It does seem like it had to be on Yahoo's end, but the fact that only one machine was affected causes me to wonder whether the network people here tinkered with something and inadvertently caused the issue. They're forever monkeying with their filtering software (e.g., sometimes I can see Flickr images, most of the time they're blocked), so I don't think it's impossible that the issue was unique to my office. Regardless, I am not currently having trouble ... fingers crossed that it stays that way.
