My initial post about "terrorism" notwithstanding, what I'm actually trying to point out is that the subject of "terrorism" seems to come up now with any major incident of violence, even if it's incredibly obvious to everyone that terrorism had nothing to do with it. In the coverage of the office shooting here in Michigan recently, in which one man shot three people and then fled, there were numerous mentions of possible terrorism, and the local news people kept repeating them until someone in an official capacity finally set them straight. It's just a media tactic -- mention "terrorism" to

...except that, if I understand typical major label contracts correctly, the money from CD sales goes to pay back an artist's "debt" to its label for services rendered: recording costs, promotional costs, etc. So CD sales still benefit an artist even if they don't put money directly into that artist's pocket. If enough CDs are sold, the artist starts to see some money -- but these days that's getting rarer. Someone who understands those contracts better than I -- feel free to correct me on this.

We don't. I just find it interesting that any time anything like this happens, post-9/11, it seems like someone official has to trot out a comment about whether it might be related to "terrorism," as if there's only one definition of that word (the government's).

It's an interesting argument. I think the most likely counterargument would point out that eventually you're supposed to return the book to the library -- you don't keep a copy for yourself.

cbsnews.com says that the shooter has been described as a "young Asian male." Given past precedent, I expected this to be another disgruntled white guy. Not that there's any particular racial element to mass murder. edit: I forgot about John Muhammad and Lee Malvo.

I've been wondering that too ... and I'm also wondering why 8:00 classes were apparently allowed to commence even though they hadn't caught the shooter. I guess maybe they hadn't been able to adequately notify the campus to stay inside, and students went to class unaware ... but I have a feeling there will be some criticism of the campus' emergency procedures when this is all said and done.
