I was going to listen to all Big Star, all the time today, but I just can't do it. I'm too upset. I'm going to see Grant-Lee Phillips tonight, so instead I'm making it Grant-Lee Phillips day. Now listening to...

I saw him twice ... once touring for High Priest, in a tiny lounge in the student forum at my college, and again in 1999(?) with the re-formed Big Star at Metro in Chicago. Loved both shows. I've been a fan of his for 25 years. I just can't come up with another word besides "devastated."

I'm beyond devastated.

Listening to the bonus disc that comes with the deluxe edition of this: There's some nice stuff on here.

I thought I'd feel some schadenfreude over Beckham missing the World Cup, but I would have preferred for him to simply not make the squad. A torn Achilles sucks, no matter who you are.

What's people reaction when I say...'Dire Straits'
cryptique replied to Wild Frank's topic in Someone Else's Song
Their debut and Making Movies are still spun in my house fairly often, and Love Over Gold every once in a while. I also enjoy Alchemy quite a bit. I don't really care much for Brothers In Arms ... there are some good songs there, but I never liked "Money For Nothing," and "Walk Of Life" got beaten into the ground from relentless airplay. I know there are DS haters out there, but I always have to wonder whether they've heard anything beyond "Sultans of Swing," "Money For Nothing," and "Walk Of Life." -

When it's all said and done, I just hope this has a positive effect on this young woman's life. I'm sure Conan is hoping the same thing. The fact that the wedding is in September -- after Conan's TV ban ends -- may work out in everyone's favor ... assuming Conan ends up with a show somewhere else. link (Detroit Free Press) Conan boosts local tweeter By B.J. Tarantino certainly didn't care about accuracy in Inglourious Basterds. Didn't keep me from loving it.

Just for laughs, they should have a chef salad called "Cuts Like A Knife."

I need to spend some time with his solo material over the next couple of days to prepare. Really looking forward to what will reportedly be a set of Kinks classics with a full band following Ray's "acoustic duo" set.

Bea Arthur was also omitted from the memorial montage.

I'm only on my second listen right now. Americana/alt-country, decent songs. I think he's from D.C. -- my brother was in Michigan visiting and brought it along, saying the guy was local to his area. He's got some Steve Earle in him, among other things. Nothing groundbreaking, but I really enjoyed my first listen. He's got a website. A song starts playing when you click onto it (fair warning). Looks like he's put out at least one album since this one I'm listening to.

Why Doesn't Anyone Listen to the Kinks?
cryptique replied to Big Perm's topic in Someone Else's Song
Just found out that after the acoustic duo bit at Thursday's show, he's supposedly bringing the opening band back out to back him on full-band versions of Kinks songs. This is excellent news. -
Yeah, I thought Baldwin and Martin were funny and did a pretty good job overall.

There have been people who had far less active film careers than Fawcett who were featured in that memorial montage. I didn't catch the whole montage (walked in shortly after it began). Seriously, they left her out?

Among my favorites are low-hole (a seven-card stud variant), five-card draw, Montana (another seven-card stud variant), 333, spit in the ocean, iron cross, Cincinnati, anaconda, guts, Indian poker... Those are just the ones I remember off the top of my head. We used to play any game for which we could agree to rules. Low-hole was probably my favorite. It's regular seven-card stud, but your lowest hole card, and any other card you have of that rank, are wild. You have to take the seventh card face-down, so it could change your wild card right at the end. And of course, no one else knows wha
