  1. Campaign in Iraq has increased terrorism threat, says American intelligence report
  2. I knew that drug testing in Canada was very rare, but I actually wasn't sure what our policy was until this thread piqued my curiousity. I thought it was interesting that the human rights perspective seems to fit with what most people here have been saying all along. Hopefully, Stephen Harper and the Conservatives won't f' things up too much before the (thieving but more progressive) Liberals are re-elected. Until then, I take nothing for granted.
  3. I think being a hardcore Neil Young fan requires the patience of a Zen master.
  4. Even if drugs aren't legal, pre-employment alcohol and drug testing could be viewed as a human rights issue. Canadian Human Rights Policy on Alcohol and Drug Testing (This summary is from 2002, but I couldn't find anything more recent, so perhaps not much has changed.)
  5. Good point. And this can work well even if everyone doesn't have kids. For example, my male coworker (w/ kids) was almost always willing to cover for me when I wanted to do some "rock tourism" on short notice, etc.
  6. I agree... and problems might be resolved more quickly (cheaply?) through a grievance.
  7. Does the US have legislation that sets minimum employment standards for non-union employees? Here it's against the law to ask questions about family/parental status in a job interview (which from some of the comments in this thread I think is a very good thing) or to discriminate against an employee (usually a woman) on this basis. There are also regulations about hours of work and overtime that apply to everyone. If you're lucky enough to be in a union, the bar is often raised a little higher. If an employee's work ethic and productivity is a problem (for whatever reason), the behaviour
  8. I have a male coworker who occasionally calls in sick or takes a vacation day because of a family emergency. He's a very hard working guy and an excellent clinician. I don't think he takes any more sick days than my other colleague who doesn't have kids.
  9. I saw this via "Google alert" a few weeks ago, but ignored it because I was in denial (and didn't see it reported anywhere else). What happened to the Archives @#%$ box set!!!!! I suppose Neil may have changed his mind (again!) and decided to release this stuff piece by piece like Dylan... but even the Bootleg Series started with a box set (Vol 1-3).
  10. I guess he's too busy designing urban sportswear for Wal-Mart now. I wonder what this could be? Not Sunken Treasure?
  11. From the Globe and Mail today: US must accept the truth about Arar
  12. I just picked the new album up today so I haven't had much time to digest it yet. Nice to see Andrew contributing again (he was really missed on Action Pact).
  13. This really burns me. Gonzales defends Arar deportation after Canadian inquiry report Yeah, right. Let's see... Maher Arar (who has lived in Canada since the age of 17 and became a Canadian citizen in 1991) was travelling on a Canadian passport when he was detained at JFK airport while en route to Montreal following a family vacation in Tunisia. Although Arar wanted to return to Canada (200 miles away) and Canadian authorities were willing to accept him, he was "deported" on a private jet in the middle of the night and somehow ended up being tortured in Syria? (Oops! Who knew?) Kin
  14. Oops! (I have a hard time telling those breeds apart without seeing the whole body.)
  15. I've been ranting about the Maher Arar case on VC for years. I'm glad that Canadian officials allowed an investigation to take place and that Arar has finally been cleared. Hopefully, the outcome of this rare public inquiry will serve as a cautionary tale. How Canada failed to protect Maher Arar
  16. I've met Chico! This is a picture of my pug, Polly. Her hobbies include snoring, random barking, shedding, and unprovoked attacks on large dogs and urban wildlife. She looks innocent, but her eyes are really saying, "If you bring a baby home, I'll cut you!"
  17. Congratulations! Wishing you many happy years together.
