  1. After a tragedy like this, I think we are all best served by considering all possible ways to prevent this in the future. The reality of the situation is that this is the worst tragedy in the country's history when it comes to a shooting. I would think that the vast majority of the time (not here obviously), having another nonprofessional pull a gun would only make the situation worse. A lot of standoffs end with no one dead. Or one or two dead (still too many). Having a teacher pull a gun or multiple students pull a gun in response to a madman will more often than not lead to more carnag
  2. Update: The last night at Tonic was a fun evening of musical chairs improv led by John Zorn and Marc Ribot. The next day there was a demostration and several musicians showed up to protest the closing. To make a long story short, the landlord wanted the venue completely empty before taking possession so Marc Ribot and Rebecca Moore got on the stage and refused to get off, until they were arrested. Brooklynvegan did a pretty nice job with the story and the photos if anyone is interested, but here are two highlights:
  3. I always suggest the same one song in these types of threads: What if God Was One of Us?
  4. Julian Barnes - Metroland. That dude can write.
  5. Intellectual property is still property that can be stolen. Just because something physical wasn't taken doesnt mean that something valuable wasn't taken. Mixtapes are (arguably) fair use. They are a derivative work. Again, arguably. You created something new by creating a Wilco greatest hits. Or a best of 2007 CD.
  6. what are the implications either way? meaning, whether this is terrorism or not?
  7. Any other reflections from folks after some time to let it sink in? I am loving it. I can't believe I missed their EPs. Its been quite a week of voxtrot overload for me.
  8. Glad to hear it. I had my fingers crossed for you and yours.
  9. Come on! What discussions around here actually lead anywhere?
  10. I suppose stealing bread to feed your family, while illegal is probably not unethical. But you'd have a hard time convincing me that, absent the band's and the label's permission, stealing music isn't unethical. Assuming it's a commercial release.
  11. Downloading music you haven't paid for is stealing whether you can get comfortable with rationalizations or not. It is illegal. Where is the grey here? I am not saying this from a high horse. I have downloaded my fair share. But when I did it, it was illegal, and I knew I was stealing. Even if/when I went to by the CD after sampling the tunes and liking them.
  12. My memory is fried. And it doesn't help that this series takes such long hiatuses. Can someone remind me why/how/when Chris killed Phil's brothers? I am completely blanking on this. As for the NY guy, didn't someone in last night's episode say it was the other NY guy trying to take over? Doc?
  13. and in the afternoon. Temporarily.
  14. Cool. Maybe now I will figure out what is so special about The National. I don't get the love.
  15. Why don't Imus's past actions and character speak to whether he is a racist or not? He loudly supported Harold Ford Jr in the recent Tennessee senatorial race and basically trashed the entire state and Ford's opponent for being racist and running a racist campaign. He also was very vocal about the reaction to Katrina being evidence of the administration's racism (i.e., a la Kanye). Imus is a shock jock. His job is to push people's buttons. He's done it for 30 years. I think the political stances he's taken and the causes he's aligned himself with go much further in telling people what h
  16. I am singing that one line at the top of my lungs on June 25 at Hammerstein Ballroom in NYC. Jeez, that's a great line.
  17. AND I SHOULD TAKE CARE!!!!
  18. Ok, I agree. I misunderstood you. I thought you meant that CBS had been looking to sell the station all along, and now, this whole flap enabled them to get rid of Imus and that it would easier to sell.
  19. I dont think that's right. Imus and Mike/Dog brought in the vast majority of advertising dollars for the station. People may not like Imus, but he brought in big bucks for that station.
  20. Give me a break. He was live on the radio and made a mistake. And apologized. There was no "figuring." And he hasn't gotten shit for it. He has been fired. Mike/Dog are railing against everyone. Good for them. Everyone from Russert to Gregory to Chris Dodd to MSNBC to CBS.
  21. Yep, I am listening now. As a new yorker, the fallout at WFAN is fascinating to me. Kudos to Mike/Dog for tackling this up front. I wonder if WFAN can survive this.
  22. Hmmm, well, they are on in 8 mins and I will tune in to find out. They stream live now at wfan.com if anyone gives a shit about what two blowhard sports nuts think about this issue. For some reason, I do.
