I agree 100%. That's why I like The A.V. Club's reviews. Check this out:

"Masterpiece" in my mind means that every song should be pretty much flawless. None of the recent 3 Dylan albums are perfect: To Make You Feel My Love Tweedle Dee & Tweedle Dum Beyond The Horizon To name a few. West is far from flawless. It's not a 3.2 or whatever Pitchfork or the NYT gave it, but it's definitely and amalgamation of her past two releases, with little to no actual innovation, lyrical or musical. It is very similar to Modern Times, in my view. Either way, I think that West is like a twin to Modern Times.

Ask Gershon too. A couple of years ago(?) that taper Big Red Fat Mike(?) threw up on himself after Gershon blatantly put up some MP3 rips of one of his precious shows. It was kind of funny, but also supremely annoying. I was thinking, though- now that people can share more and more music via the Internet, and have a reduced need for CDs w/ iPods, etc., filetypes will become increasingly more obvious, because you'll be downloading MP3s or FLACs, and you'll know it, and they'll go onto the iPod or whatever, not the CD. I see the MP3 argument cooling down in a while. At this point, people jus

I love it. I laugh every time I hear it. I agree that it's a bad comparison, even if some parallels can be made. It can definitely be like picking out a coffin for an artist because it holds her to an impossible standard- not only because Dylan has done so much good stuff, but also because Dylan is now an icon separate from his achievement. I agree, she shouldn't be compared to Dylan. But- I think that many people tend to see her that way, and the comparison really hurts her. It's obvious especially now, with a disappointing album like West. It's not bad, and if you put it up against

Anyone ever hear the "Happy Birthday, Bob" song by Loudon Wainwright III? It's pretty damn good.

I agree 100%.

"Most of the Time" does almost redeem that entire album...almost. Fortunately, there is also "Man in the Long Black Coat". The album is still overrated, though.
-
The songs will undoubtedly be better in a live setting. Presumably, you'll get a setlist that includes the good tracks from her other albums, as well. I'd go see her, despite my feelings about West.

To be honest, I really can't bring myself to listen to more than 3 or 4 songs on that CD. And I really, really like Dylan.

Thanks!!!!

Just wrote this last night about Lucinda vs. Dylan vs. quality: http://www.owlandbear.com/2007/02/23/edito...s-modern-times/ That makes more sense to me, and I mean that in a totally respectful way. I am sure that it is much easier for non-native speakers to appreciate good music without the lyrics. Although not exactly the same, it'd be similar to me appreciating a Japanese song, while unbeknown to me, the lyrics were a translated version of the Barney theme song. I do believe that. Fortunately, the good songs are really damn good.

Here are the Car Wheels outtakes (FLAC) for anyone interested: http://download.owlandbear.com/lucinda-wil...wheels_outtakes

I'm sure that Lucinda, being the daughter of a respected poet, would say that lyrics are one of the most important parts of her work. It's one reason why she's so acclaimed. It is a bad thing for her to put out an album with mediocre lyrics. By the way, if you "don't listen to lyrics," does it mean that you don't hear good lyrics either?). On another side note, I'm expecting Sky Blue Sky to be lyrically similar (a.k.a. bland) to West. Prove me wrong fellas! Good music is nothing without good lyrics, unless it's instrumental. Otherwise, it's just annoying, like being patronized.

Christian Science Monitor is a good place to go for even-handed commentary articles. Otherwise, I just subscribe to Reuters and Yahoo's RSS feeds.

Ah, I'm not sure about that. I'm assuming that these are the really stripped down, different versions that I heard a while back.

Here is a torrent of the Car Wheels alternate tracks: http://www.thetradersden.org/forums/showthread.php?t=34410 I'm going to download and re-post them next week, for people who don't have BT.

There are a few good songs on WWT, but there are also several stinkers. Here are the good ones: Fruits of My Labor Ventura Over Time World Without Tears That said, Louie, did you ever get those Car Wheels alternate tracks that you were looking for? If not, I can probably get them to you sometime.

Aaahahahah! :lol :lol Yeah, I use two wires and a slab of tuna. Is there something wrong with that? This is the one I have at home.
-
I got one for my parents because my dad has been filling up the hard drive with MP3s ever since he got his 80g iPod (which, incidentally is 2x the size of their internal disk). I have this one at home. I love the thing like I would my own child. This is the one that Target is offering. Seems nice and solid. If you have anything that you wouldn't want to lose in a crash, it's definitely worth looking into.

Target is selling Western Digital 320GB USB2.0 hard drives for $125.00.

Cool, I'll take a listen.

Word. I have not had any free time lately, due to a horribly sick cat and a lot of work at work, but I will try to make time this week to talk about the FTP.

Yeah, I don't know how much we had. It was pretty bad, though. I'd say it was about 4" of snow and 4" of ice, which made for a terrible combination. That said, some people in the states make do with a lot worse, whereas 99% of the affected area here will stock up on canned goods, milk, and bread for 3 weeks, and clean their rifles.

We've had a lot of snow here in the NE. Some (most) hate it, some love it. Unlike other places like Buffalo where they're used to snow, here in Lancaster, PA, almost everybody panics. The nice thing is that everybody is so afraid for their lives, they stay home and leave the roads to the fearless photographers! Anyway, here are some non-panic-related photos (with some Photoshop fun) that I took between Thursday and Sunday, for anyone interested. http://loperco.com/main.php?g2_itemId=4454
