  1. This is a fantastic '93 show. The Jack Straw->Bertha openers are full force and extended jams, Broken Arrow is fabulous, the second set Help->Slip-> Frank is right on the money, as well. I listen to this show often: http://www.archive.org/details/gd93-08-22.sbd.nawrocki.562.sbefail.shnf
  2. Caught those Cap Center shows too and the 3.16.90 is excellent, as well. I always liked the Foggy Bottom reference on the Tom Thumb's from night 2. The Blow Away from the 3rd night is really nice, too... There'd been talk of building a performance venue since mid-80s iirc with the idea of them travelling less and having a more stable home base....
  3. I was there as well. The second set is similar to the MSG second set and there was huge expectation for the Stephen. I still get chills listening bto the Space-> Stephen transition....the place lit up like I've never seen before or since.
  4. Jane's played a bar in Aspen this past NYE. Wanted to go but the tickets (face) were like $500 or some bullshit like that.
  5. Mentioned this before but Weir has stated that 87-90 were the band's strongest years. Take that for what it is, but they really were ON in that era. I realize '71, '73, 77, etc are incredible. I don't think Weir meant that the music was neccesarily better but that the band were in a zone that was creative, inspired, Up, etc. At least that's how i take it. BTW, never liked the GD's take on "Ballad..." I caught the Hampton one and the NJ one and it did nothing for me. Soinded flat and rote to me.
  6. IIRC there was a pretty spacey mini-jam before that 88 Sugar Mags-> Scarlet second set opener. Yep.
  7. Did those Hampton's in 88 and the Warlocks in 89. Could only buy Warlocks tix in VA, kind of a stealth show they snuck in for that tour.
  8. Just did a few nights of Phil & Friends last weekend looking forward to The Motet, Great American Taxi, Todd Snider and a bunch of local jam bands.....
  9. Why surprised to see Kimock? Wasserman was in there too. Best I've seen Ratdog before is when Karan was out sick a few years ago and Kimock filled in for him. Listen to the Money for Gasoline from Red Rocks with Kimock. Fantastic stuff. Whole show is excellent, actually: http://www.archive.org/details/ratdog2007-07-24.dpa-4channelmix.flac16 I agree, to an extent, that Ratdog does the "jerry" tunes injustice. However, tunes like "Birdsong" and "Dark Star" allow for ample room to get the horns and spacey vibe going.
  10. That's a repeat of a recent show from TRI. Kimock was too low, imo, but I thought it was pretty good stuff. Liked the dual horns, too.
  11. 88-90 were excellent years. I caught a lot of shows in the time, which helps influence my opinion, but they really were rolling and in high spirits these years. A lot of the midi effects and gadgets were broken out then, too....
  12. I watched it. Thought it was decent. Nice to see Wasserman in the mix again, the extra horn guy was cool, and they could've turned Kimock up a bit more. i appreciate that he does the TRI shows. He also has other bands do shows from there, too (The Outlaws were the next night). Thought it all sounded nice.
  13. "Those" countries?! Listen to yourself. But seriously, what countries? Seriously.
  14. A There needs to be accountability for parents, as well. There are a lot more options today for parents/students than there were 10 years ago, too, with innovative status schools and charter schools (both non fee-based). Nothing wrong with having criteria to gauge a school's effectiveness, just don't put the onus on one series of tests. Hold parents accountable for getting their kids to school and devoting some time to the school through interaction and participation, look at a body of evidence for the students rather than one test, allow teachers varied ways to be assesssed (this is happening
  15. Weir does do GD tunes in new contexts in Ratdog, though. Listen to the Half-Steps, Sugar Mags, Terrapin, etc. He stops and adds stuff in non-traditional spots. I think Ratdog shakes it up a good deal. Mark karan isn't a favorite of mine either but it's really not a lead-guitar based band anyway. The horns and rhythm are the thing with most Ratdog stuff. That said, I really liked when Kimock filled in for a sick Karan a few years ago. definitely added a different dynamic.
  16. Speaking for myself, of course, the data and the collection of the data isn't a problem. The main problem is that the data (the state standardized tests under NCLB mandate) is the sole focus of determining if a student, teacher, and school are "successful." There is no body of evidence or cumulative data: it's a one-shot deal that is, imo, myopic and misguided.
  17. The "rhythm" Weir played w/ Scaring the Children on the free TRI gig was pretty much lead guitar work. Really cool to watch up close.
  18. Hadn't read about locals being against it, but there usually is a faction against similar places opening no matter who opens it or where it is. Weir (Scaring the Children) did a free stream around Xmas time from TRI. It was only 4 tunes but cool none the less....
  19. That ain't "acting." The image of Artie's ass is forever emblazoned in my memory. It's horrible. I saw Carnal Knowledge or whatever the fuck it was over 20 years ago, too.
  20. I'm sure he's got plenty of dough but he's been envisioning something in this vein for awhile now. Good for him. I'll check it out if I'm ever out that way.....
  21. You guys see Phils new Terrapin Crossroads? Part restaurant/art studio/music venue/etc.: http://terrapincrossroads.net/ http://www.marinij.com/rosskentfieldgreenbrae/ci_19673926?source=most_viewed
  22. I can't see the video. What is it? I'm dying to know.
