  1. Garcia was clean and not clean on and off most of his career. It doesn't matter, much, in the end. To me, at least. He had his ups and downs, musically/vocally. Even when he shat the bed, at times, with the lyrics/vocals, his playing almost always made up for it. It's part of the lore that the JGB became a conduit to fund his and John Kahn's habits/vices for a lot of the 80s. Some great music was made by the JGB in the 80s.....
  2. I think that Wilburys album gets due recognition, imo. It's a great album and lauded as such, I believe. Dread Zeppelin played here in Denver last weekend. I was unaware they were still around. I second NRBQ. Grew up in CT and heave seen them a bunch. Those guys are troopers. Self-Portrait is a decent enough amalgamation of an Lp. Some nice covers of some traditional tunes, as well. Dylan's most underrated album, imo, is the Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid album. The movie is underrated, as well.
  3. Man, Garcia's voice wasn't ever much of a factor for me. If they were playing well and he wasn't muffing up lyrics, I was happy. There is soooo much good stuff from the 80s. I always think of the band in stages, anyway. I love the diversity of the different stages, too, I think ignoring 80s (or any era) short-changes the evolution of the band, in a sense. What attracted me to them from the get-go was that they weren't stagnant or stuck in a mode or era but willing and able to try new shit, pass or fail.
  4. There aren't many, imo. Boston Garden, 10.1.94, is a pretty great show though, particularly the playing in the second set: Help on the Way -> Slipknot! -> Franklin's Tower Walkin' Blues Althea Me & My Uncle -> Big River Tom Thumb's Blues So Many Roads Promised Land Scarlet Begonias -> Fire on the Mountain Way to go Home Saint of Circumstance -> Terrapin -> Drums -> Space -> The Last Time -> Stella Blue -> One More Saturday Night E: Liberty 19 Songs
  5. I agree. The "Visions" from Philly Spectrum spring '95 is absolutely magical.
  6. Punks and 'Heads have plenty in common. The GD were one of the first to do the whole DYI thing with their own label, too....
  7. I have to respectfully disagree, mb. Not sure why you selected '85 as the point of a downward spiral. Garcia looked (and sounded, vocally) pretty bad in most of '85, particularly the summer. However, the playing and song selections were really tight. I've always thought that -87-90 were some of the best years of the band's existence. Without getting into Pig era/particular /73 runs,'77, etc., the '87-90 years were pretty stellar through and through. I don't remember anything but decent-excellent Garcia health/playing, excellent new tunes, bust-outs of old tunes (Warlocks shows, etc), the ba
  8. Yeah. Ditch the tix stubs and backstage passes and shit and bring the price down a little..... Caught a bunch of the Spring 90s live, too. Crisp and tight at each one.....
  9. Spring '90 was amazing. Great call for a box set. Hey there NOJ....
  10. Count Basie Orchestra, Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Frankie Laine, Ray Charles, Wilco.
  11. JGB plays out here a lot and I usually go to see them when I can. Caught them July 3/4 and the guitar guy (while no Stu Allen) is decent enough to fit in. Melvin's lost a little weight, too!
  12. Two words: Lady Ga Ga. Or is that 3 words?
  13. I just made the name "Neil" up. I have no idea what your real name is or who you even are, really.
  14. If she's the greatest artist of the 21st C (so far), I'm glad the century has barely begun. She's un-orginal in thinking she's original. Sounds like other artists, dresses like other artists, likes to try and stir up talk by being so "shocking" in antics/words, etc. She's a talented singer, musician, and entertainer but beyond that she's more hype than substance, imo. And, for the record (in case some of you are keeping a record of stuff like this), I believe in bi-sexuals like I believe in leprechauns.
  15. Had never heard of Trigger Hippy until today. Quick google search and it looks right up my alley. I like the concept of the band with the revolving 4th member.
  16. All managers get criticized and scrutinized pretty much daily....
  17. Yes. Caught the Weir, Robinson, Jackie Greene trio last summer and they were excellent. Excellent. They're doing 3 shows around here in a month or so and looking to catch them again. The Brotherhood coming too. Never seen him with that outfit but it looks worth it.
