  1. Story that I've heard goes that Keith and Donna met JG after a show (after Pig had recently died) and Donna (Keith being too shy) told Garcia that Keith was going to be the new GD piano/keys guy. I think Keith knew Betty Cantor at the time, too, so Garcia allowed him to audition....
  2. Brent had played w/ (been in) Bobby and the Midnights, as well as Go Ahead w/Kreutzman. So he did have an "in," as they say. Yeah, I've heard the Garcia interview before on Brent and was aware he wasn't really an "artsy" guy and had some demons (who didn't in the band?), but even though he sang often of scorned love, etc. I always got the sense he was just a shy guy at the end of the day. Regardless, I dug the hell out of his passion when he sang, as well as his playing. Some shows I'd like to just hang on his side and check him out for the night.... I sat next him for a couple drinks after
  3. Vince was really different from Brent in his style. I didn't mind Vince, for the most part, but he didn't come close to what Brent brought to and meant for the band. Long, Long Way had room for a nice Garcia jam in there, I didn't mind Samba in the Rain, etc. The cover of All Too Much with Vince singing lead was excellent, as was the Baba-?Tomorrow Only Knows. Overall, he was decent enough but on the bottom as far as relevance in the history of the band, imo. I met Vince a few times when he'd play in town here and he was always a nice guy and I liked his solo/Missing Man stuff. I think he go
  4. If it was a Wilco Wet T-Shirt Contest I'd be in. Sorry.
  5. Never took/saw Brent as angry, but shy. Really liked what he brought to the band: musically and vocally. Blow Away, Far From Me, Easy to Love You, Tons of Steel, We Can Run, Maybe You Know How I Feel, Never Trust a Woman, etc. all tunes I feel the GD really grew into and liked playing.....Also really appreciated his backround/harmonizing vocals. Thought he was a great fit for the band and really helped push them in a new direction. Through the eye of the beholder and all, of course.
  6. BIG Brent fan here, too.....The band breathed new life with the man. I used to love when Garcia would turn his back to the rest of the band, face Brent, and they'd both be beaming smiling at eachother as they were jammin'......
  7. Heck yeah, tons of times. His voice reminds me a lot of high-pitched/whiny Garcia voice. I have no beef with it. Endearing, in fact.
  8. Yeah, a bunch. Trey's playing is excellent and unique (which fits in great with P&Fs basic gist/vibe) but I don't really dig his vocals on GD/JG tunes. I prefer Warren or Robinson or Joan or Stu Allen or Kadlecik over Trey by a long shot.
  9. I disagree. I don't like how Trey does GD tunes, really. Saw the Jerry tribute Comes a Time at the Greek a few years ago and was more impressed with some of the other takes on GD tunes moreso than Trey doing Bertha. Stu Allen sings/plays JG tunes really well, imo.
  10. I went to that SPAC show but not the Hershey park. Midnight Hour, Bertha opener was excellent (Bobby and Brent back and forth in the ending part of Midnight Hour) and the second set Stranger-> Eyes->GDTRFB was excellent, as well.
  11. A Charlie Miller, to boot! Yeah the Keep on Growing, too. This summer saw Garcia starting to gain some serious weight and his vocals started to get really strained . The music was really good but as I remember this was the beginning of a real notice of health issues with Garcia that culminated in the coma.
  12. Oh man I love chatting about the non-musical shit, too. It's ok folks.
  13. Buddy of mine who worked for Rykodisc in Boston in the mid-late 90s and met Dick at a Ryko function one night. Said he was pretty blazed out but a nice guy to chat with. That's all I've got on that. I've been to a good chunk of shows and never saw him. Did meet Owlsey once very briefly backstage (Boston, as well), though.
  14. A-man: Scroll about half-way down to heading The Tapes: http://deadessays.blogspot.com/
  15. Yeah, pretty much. The guy who had the reels did not keep them in good condition, tried to get a million buck for them from GDM (they said fuck off) and Eaton offered to clean the reels up (Latvala helped) and was savvy enough to put them all onto dats.
  16. Hit Pete's Kitchen on Colfax for late night eats. Also, Shug, there are a couple "GD" bars in town my buddy runs. If time allows, try Quixote's True Blue (2150 Lawrence) which has live music just about every night. Great outdorr patio w/ stage, too. Or, Sancho's Broken Arrow on Clarkson and Colfax (right next to the Fillmore).
  17. Haven't seen that one yet but the one of Rob Eaton getting a hold of over 200 reels of Betty boards is really cool. BTW, besides his work in DSO, check out his American Beauty band if you get a chance.....
  18. Looks like the lazy-assed cops in VT, CT, RI, NJ, D.C., and MD need to step it up....
  19. Most people named Randy are pretty awful, anyway. This obviously excludes people from this site. Unless your name is Randy, of course.
  20. Randy. Horny and randy, actually.
  21. In Levon's autobiography (This Wheel's On Fire) he cites it as "Fanny," "Miss Fanny." IIRC.
