  1. It says on their website the capacity is 5000: http://www.kingcounty.gov/recreation/parks/inventory/marymoor/concerts.aspx I think the large standing area is a little deceiving. I wouldn't have guessed it was that much. And maybe Wilco didn't quite sell out in 2007 but they must have come pretty close.
  2. I adore "SBS". Have Wilco written better songs? Are there a couple of songs that sound weak on their own? Yes and yes. But it just sounds so good as a complete piece of work. At a time when thanks to I-PODs I rarely listen to an album start to finish - "SBS" is an exception. The sequencing of the songs is spot on and the overall tone of the album has remained incredibly consistent to me over nearly three years of listening. Melancholy, soulful in a restrained fashion and hopeful and optimistic. I wasn't surprised to find out that Jeff had written a lot of it during the period when his m
  3. There's a two day gap between Seattle (10th) and Vancouver (13th). It could be that Wilco want to take in some of the Winters Olympics. Or they will add another night at the Paramount. When they last played the Seattle area in 2007 they sold out Marymoor Park which has a capacity of around 1500 - 2000 more than the Paramount. I am hoping that if they sell out the 10th quickly they will add a date on the 11th. For those of you thinking of making a jaunt to Seattle, I'd concur that the Paramount is a superb venue. Classic old fashioned style theatre with fantastic acoustics and great sightlin
  4. Agreed. REM were a massive part of the soundtrack of my life during my late teens into my early twenties (as I suspect was the case for quite a few board members here also.) . I went to Uni (in Britain) for my first year when "Document" was released and have been a really big REM fan since the release of "Life's Rich Pageant". I'd get a massive rush going to record fairs at 16 or 17 to get hold of bootleg videos and tapes. As such, on a subjective and emotional level REM's early days are peerless to me. I'd say that such a list has to include "Sitting Still", "Harborcoat", "Feeling Gravit
  5. I recently rewatched a live version from 2001 or 2002 on youtube. I think this is a song which would really lend itself to the current version of the band. Also, I'd love to see Wilco release a rarities and b-sides version album at some point which would include the Wilco version of this song.
  6. Henry. Great story. Congrats to you and your bride. I was at the Berkeley Show and remember this moment very clearly. An incredible show on a beautiful night which I am sure few of us will forget quickly.
  7. Ditto. One could easily get the horn from watching that performance too often. And I could be wrong but it seemed like John was giving her pins and booty some attention also.
  8. It seems obvious that Wilco have really honed their stagecraft over the last several tours. This includes a great feel as to what might work better in 12,000 capacity ball field (Keyspan) or 9000 capacity outdoor venue (Berkeley) given the size of the audience and the venue. There is the added issue of that as your catalogue increases and especially when you have released a new record there is less room for old chestnuts That said, and as much as love these two songs, it would seem that mixing up the inclusion of "Misunderstood" and "Spiders"in the encore would allow the band to reward lon
  9. I think that's a pretty spot on analysis! It pains me to say it slightly but REM should have probably split up after Bill Berry left. 4 records since 1995 is a paltry output. I really like and admire "Up", like "Accelerate", tolerate "Reveal" and hate "Around The Sun". But REM lost their balance when Bill Berry left. In addition to being a great songwriter (e.g.: "Perfect Circle") he was the member who with Peter Buck encouraged the band to do things quickly in the studio and who counterbalanced Mike Mills and Michael Stipe's tendency to overwork or overproduce songs. (The only long-standi
  10. Well..there's a tendency here to reduce sport to a never-ending stream of statistics (whether it be NFL, basketball and especially baseball). At times, I think this detracts from the fun/beauty/pleasure of just watching a game which often comes down to one or two key moments which are full of drama. (Hence the theater analogy). One could make a similar point about the enjoyment of music or other art forms when the subject of lists come up.
  11. Point taken: i'll take that as a compliment. I mean Frasier was always a hit with the ladies, successful at work and never neurotic:)
  12. Maybe, it's because I wasn't born in the country that reduces the theatre-spectacle of sports into interminable statistics but does anyone else think the idea of trying to rank albums this way ridiculous? For godsake this is art.
  13. Totally off the mark in my humble opinion. Wilco's canon from "AM" to "WTA" including the Mermaid Albums and "Kicking Television" is up there (I don't want to make a direct comparison) with what REM released from "Chronic Town" to "New Adventures in Hi-Fi". For both bands, I don't think they released a true dud or stinker in those periods. You can make arguments as to what are the best albums and when the bands peaked but to me "AGIB", "SBS" and "WTA" are all great albums individually and as part of Wilco's body of work. It's unrealistic to think that every album by the respective bands wil
  14. 1. Saturday 2. Friday 3. Sunday 4.Thursday 5. Wednesday 6. A.M. 7. Monday Sometimes, Sundays are the best days ever but usually Saturdays hit the spot most. My favourite colours are: 1. Red 2. Turquoise 3. Green 4. Lavender 5. Orange 6. Blue 7. Pink
  15. At the Berkeley show (6/27/09) , their was only one t-shirt out of about 8 or do designs that was $25 ( a black one with a "classic rock" type Wilco design). Every other one was $20. It was also a nice touch that the tour t-shirt could only be bought at the show (as opposed to being available on the website.) As for the posters $25 for a piece of art is a deal. In Seattle, where the Flatstock music poster convention is held every year, many posters are $35 and up depending on the artist. I also thought $5 for the programme I bought was a fair price. So unless the merchandise has increased
  16. Very reasonable. T-shirts were $20, programs $5 and posters $20. There may have been one men's t-shirt that was $25.
  17. I second that emotion. I love SBS and while I may pick holes in individual songs I really enjoy listening to the album all the way through. I'd like to think we could disagree harmoniously re: SBS.
  18. Really, really like it. I have made a mix for my i-pod of the new album and about 45 Wilco favourites of mine. Is it groundbreaking? No. But it's a worthy and very good addition to the Wilco canon. Favourites: Wilco (The Song), Deeper Down, Solitaire, Everlasting Everything, Sunny Feeling and especially One Wing and Bull Black Nova. I struggle with "I'll Fight" which despite a decent middle-eight is the only song on the album I dislike. Perhaps because of the poppier nature of this album , I have also gone back to Summerteeth with some vigour too.
  19. Really well-balanced and thoughtful review. I am more keen than you on certain songs but each to their own. I'd stress that while "Wilco (The Album)" isn't their best it's a more than worthy addition to their brilliant body of work. "AM" to "WTA" over 15 years (including the "Mermaid Avenues" and "Kicking Television") is as a stretch of quality, diverse, relevant and enjoyable music which rivals that of just about any other band or artist out there over the same period or indeed in the preceding 15 years (1980-1994). I am really loving everything apart from "I'll Fight" and "Country Disap
  20. Brilliant song: musically, lyrically and emotionally and I am glad you've found some solace during a very difficult time because of it. The power of music is an incredible thing and when I have been in similar places it's hit me in an exactly the same way. Roghly ten years my marriage broke up. Someone coincidentally had bought me Travis "The Man Who" album. Bingo for the song "Last Day of the Laughter". It broughts lots of tears but definitely had some mildly cathartic affect which was good for my spirits. As a Liverpool fan you literally Never Walk Alone. Having been in the same spot I c
  21. Couldn't not agree more. Lists like this are such wank! I am going to sound incredibly snooty here and say that the people whose opinions I really respect on music don't reduce their love of a band or genre to an infantile list. Rather they appreciate the body of work of someone like Wilco as a whole and whilst having favourites know that different albums hit the spot at different times. And if I can add my two cents, I'd say that with two better songs (instead of "I'll Fight" and "My Country Disappeared") this album would be downright irresistible almost all the time.
  22. Fifth Wilco show and first at the Greek At Berkeley. I can see why Jeff called it the band's favourite place to play. The group of four I was with concurred that this version of the band only seems to get better. Musically they were close to flawless, Jeff's voice was really strong and perhaps best of all the band was all smiles and clearly loved playing the Greek. They came on at 8.45 and left the stage just before the curfew at eleven. Jeff kept the banter to a minimum until commenting on a injured/messed up person. He went to comment that playing the Greek that he is caught between want
  23. Great review from one of the best reviewers out there (someone who dares to not award Coldplay and U2 records 4 or 5 stars like many others). And someone who really knows his stuff. Here's a not-so-great review from the Guardian who give it three out of five stars: "Its release may have been overshadowed by the recent death of former member Jay Bennett, but in all other respects the seventh Wilco album contains no great shocks: it's well written, nicely produced and tastefully retro, with a few vaguely experimental bits. An eponymous title this late in a band's career suggests the album is
