  1. Yeah, I gave my official answer the same day I posted the question. I should ask my professor the igloo building question for paybacks.
  2. Well, I did post the statistics question somewhere before I submitted my final answer, I just didn't take the advice anyone gave me. Lesson learned for next time! I've managed to maintain 97% in that class though and even got 100% on the last test.
  3. I love school. Seriously, if I could afford to be a student for the rest of my life, I'd do it in a heartbeat. Of course I have classes that I hate (writing mostly) but I also try to take those in an accelerated class just to get them over and done with. Like my writing class was an 8 week online course and my stats class is a 12 week online course. There was this one girl in my A&P class (accelerated A&P I & II in the same semester) who would come to class and read novels during the lecture. It's a 5 credit class, so that's a pretty huge chunk of cash to blow off. You hav
  4. I use other methods too. Usually, I'll re-copy my notes and the terms or concepts that require memorization (some things do), I enter into a two column spreadsheet on google docs and use it to make flashcards that I can view on my iPhone (no need to carry around a stack of cards). The other things I will think out and talk through how they work together. I also teach the stuff to my husband and kids because explaining it to someone else helps me out a lot. They of course don't care about what I'm talking about but at least they humor me. I can also scan certain notes, diagrams, etc and sa
  5. I do have to say that most of the people in my classes have no idea how to learn by any other way than rote memorization and their critical thinking skills are completely lacking. In my microbiology class they complain after every test because the professor didn't teach them specifically about a certain concept. No, he didn't but he did teach you enough about it that if you put the pieces together, you'd be able to figure it out. I get so sick of hearing "but that wasn't on the study guide." And for the record, I love online classes. I'm a full-time student with 4 kids and if it weren'
  6. Major vibes coming his way. Prayers for a speedy recovery!
  7. Kate, I'm so sorry you lost a friend. Big hugs to you.
  8. I heard an interview on the radio with Dr. Mary Ann Hopkins this morning. She is a general surgeon at NYU's Langone Medical Center and an associate professor at NYU. She is very involved with Doctors Without Borders and said that the best thing anyone here can do to help is to donate money to an organization such as Doctors Without Borders or the Red Cross. She said that inflatable tents are arriving in Haiti to be used as treatment facilities and that she is on the short list of doctors and is eagerly awaiting her call to go down and help. She described the conditions that they work unde
  9. If you can't have IM software on your computer, you can still log into your Gmail and use the Google Talk feature that way. I don't work but Jay and I use Google Talk to communicate throughout the day while he's at work. I absolutely hate talking on the phone, mainly because as soon as I pick up the phone, my kids want my attention or start fighting and it's really hard to carry on a conversation sometimes. When I did work, I would use AIM to talk to coworkers. I was a benefit rep and we would be on the phone a lot with various employees and it was easy to just IM a quick question to a
  10. I'm definitely going to have to check this book out. I don't know that another book could live up to The Red Tent, that's still at the top of my list. So far I've read: I have to admit that I didn't read the entire book. There were sections that I totally skipped concerning the revolution, the history of slang, and other parts that didn't add to the story. I had read this book when I was a kid and loved it then. I still love it. Now reading: So far so good... Hopefully I'll be able to finish this one before school starts on Monday. After that I'll be reading 20th century A
  11. About 2 years ago I wanted to trade in my Dodge mini-van for a newer model. I needed something that would fit 6 people (3 in car seats) and went to the same dealership I bought the car I was trading in from. They told me I owed too much on my other van and wouldn't pay it off. Then they told me that all I could afford was a plain Jane mini-van. It didn't even have tinted windows in the back and the only "extra" it had was tilt/cruise. They were not willing to work with me at all, even though I have an excellent credit score, was a repeat customer, and was local (small town). Whatever.
  12. It's funny he has a book called "Arguing with Idiots"
  13. This always makes me chuckle. http://www.much-ado.net/austenbook/ Oh, I've been told Danielle Steele books are great...
  14. I don't know if I even finished that book. I've found that if I put the book down when I realize that I don't like it, sometimes I can wait a couple of years and try again with a much different opinion of the book. I still have this one on my shelf waiting for the right time to pick it back up. I did the same thing with A Prayer For Owen Meany and that turned out to be one of my favorite books. I'll try not to disappoint you next time
  15. I forgot to add this one to my list. I actually like other books of his that I've read, but just couldn't even finish this one. I don't think we can be friends. Wuthering Heights is one of my all time favorite books and I love everything Jane Austen has ever written...
  16. I hated: Saturday by Ian McEwan Peace Like a River by Leif Enger We Were the Mulvaneys by Joyce Carol Oates A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius by Dave Eggers (Couldn't get past the first few chapters)
  17. I love his show more for the sheer nerdiness of it over the actual food though. I love when he gets all sciency and stuff. I tried lentils once because he made them look cool. Turns out they taste like dirt, but at least I tried them.
  18. I agree with the cooking thing, even if you have no clue how to cook. On our first real date, Jay made me dinner. Granted, I had to stand in the kitchen and tell him what pans to use, how to boil water, how to cut the vegetables, etc., but he still made it. Looking back, that was one of our more memorable dates and it was fun to tease him because he had no clue what a spatula even was (he still has no clue what a spatula is and it's been almost 7 years since then, if that tells you anything...). Afterwords we went to a U of M hockey game and back to his place to watch movies. It was swee
  19. I finally saw the trailer when I took my son to see Harry Potter last night. We both can't wait for this movie to come out, it looks awesome!
  20. Also, if you have netflix, you can watch the Pubs of Ireland thing instantly.
  21. I'm so sad that he died. Angela's Ashes is one of my favorite books.
  22. I've never tried weed, but I know I can't take vicodin and still function. That stuff knocks me on my butt.
