Very sad. He was only a few years older than I am. I knew all the Oliver! songs by heart. What is amazing about the entire Monkees phenomenon is that the show was on the air less than 2 years. I still like watching it, but man was it corny. LouieB

Good memory. Too bad you would even consider voting for Santorum. Sad state of affairs. LouieB

Not sure why you would hire Neko Case and Kelly Hogan and then bury them that deep in the mix. I just can't figure that out. Jakob even sounds like Bob. LouieB

I don't believe this is true, but not going to argue about it. Since I was always supporting Barack back in those days I have no idea why I would have said that. Link?? Feel free to vote for Santorum, one of the most hateful retro candidates ever. LouieB

Spoiler alert - Barack Obama will be elected President in 2012. (I like the Louvins too....looking forward to reading Charlie's autobiography someday soon.) Also both Colbert and Stewart ran the back to back clips of Santorum dissing Obama for saying all kids should go to college and then Barack saying that all kids should have some sort of post-secondary training, community college, apprenticeship, or college. What a complete idiot Santorum is. LouieB

I also recently downloaded and started listening to "Juliet, Naked" by Nick Hornsby. So far so good and tailor made for the viachiago crowd. LouieB

3/4th or talking heads waiting on a call
LouieB replied to IRememberDBoon's topic in Someone Else's Song
I thought about the Ramones (and Blondie, Patti Smith and a few others...) but in terms of long term interest influence and airplay TH may take the title. Many folks certainly prefer the Ramones for overall fun though. But the Talking Heads cast a far longer shadow no matter how you look at it. LouieB -
Will have to check more of his books out. I know 1Q84 got mixed reviews but I dug it alot. LouieB

LouieB replied to IRememberDBoon's topic in Someone Else's Song
As with many older musicians, why deal with tempermental old bandmates when you can pick your sidepeople and play whatever you want. David Byrne ain't dumb, he knows he is famous for the TH, why would he ignore that material. It would be like seeing Paul McCartney (or Ray Davies, etc) and him only playing Wings and after. That doesn't sell tickets. LouieB -

Really. in fact they may be THE most important group of the mid-70s NY scene. There is a tendancy to think of groups as cult favorites when actually they were huge acts. Bands like CCR, Kinks, Beach Boys, etc, ruled the airwaves back in the day. TH started out small but certainly ended up huge. They had plenty of "hits" and sold tons of LPs. Love them, but now when I hear them played on XRT, I change the channel. LouieB -

Listen to WXRT just one day and you will hear Talking Heads about every hour. They are hardly a footnote in rock history. I would also guess that David Byrne sells more solo albums than Tom Tom Club. But either way the entire band makes plenty on radio play and back catalogue sales. It is always amazing to hear huge groups like TH refered to as footnotes. These guys get books written about them, have tribute bands playing their music and loads of fans. They are hardly footnotes. LouieB -
Going to Chicago....what to do, see, stay, etc.
LouieB replied to LouieB's topic in Tongue-Tied Lightning
True that. If you are coming to protest though, feel free to do some sightseeing as well. Otherwise I would agree, don't come that weekend. LouieB -
Maybe this is true, I dunno, but of all the places to go in Chicago, the Cubby Bear is about the last place I would send anyone. Somone needs to rent a place and invite us in. Seriously. LouieB

As long as we are talking about stuff; It is again time when folks are coming to Chicago for the Tweedy solo shows. A couple record stores off the beaten paths and a whole lot different than our favorite hipster record hangouts like Reckless, Permiment, and Lauries (we love all of them so not dissing them...but they are close to the hip neighborhoods and within everyone's comfort zones.) One I like but which is out in the middle of nearly nowhere (Midway Airport) is the Record Dugout at 6053 W 63rd Street. Really inconveniently located and run by some really strange guys, this place is -
So? Lots of other folks do to....not much to see really. Marina City (Towers) is easy to find. Just go to the river downtown and look. We need to take this discussion to the other thread. Meanwhile taking a swim in the Chicago River sounds like about the worst idea ever. LouieB

Yes, Rick Santorum is a human being, but he is pretty bent. You can think it is sad, but the guy is pretty dangerous at this point. It is just amazing that he has gone from being kicked out of office by his constituents to a stones throw from inhabiting the Oval Office. LouieB

All of us Chicagoans will second that one. Weekends and even some week days can get pretty crowded, but it is a wonderful and unique place. Just saw Dave Douglas and his quintet there a couple weeks ago. And if you are into Wilco nostalgia, feel free to hang out in front of the Riviera for awhile, espeically if it is cold. The Riv is just across the street. Also Check out Shake Rattle and Roll right next door (not open at night) or any of the fine restaurants in the area, particularlly the Vietnamese and Chinese ones down by Argyle Street. LouieB -

As usual I don't feel badly for any of them. Bands break up!! Hopefully the 3/4 have a decent contract so they get plenty of royalties. They must all be fairly wealthy. The best reason to get TH back together is to make some dough. Ask the Pixies. LouieB -
That clip isn't long enough. So what did the panelist say? LouieB

Sparky has made it pretty clear that Ron Paul is his man. Or maybe there isn't a candidate he can really support. I don't kinow. I am ready to vote Santorum just to keep him around a few more months to spice shit up What a dick!! While all politicians have similar traits (all tow the same basic party line, all continue some of the policies from their predicessors) only the blind and the lame could think that Obama and Bush are the same. Most of us who support him wish that Obama had stepped further left, but considering the stuff that is being said about him, who can blame him for trying

White Bicycles was a good but ultimately unsatisfying book. Not sure why. I have been listening to !Q84. Anyone else read this? I am enjoying it. LouieB

I would think that Byrne could do whatever he wanted to if he wanted to do it. He has toured over the years and he has made records with and without Eno. There is just something about the idea of the original four members of the band and the chemistry they had back in the day. Of course as Paul McCartney has always said about the Beatles, you can't reheat a souflle. So it is with the TH. They were great, they still make gobs of money from their records sales and being played on the radio. Some things are better left alone (Even WXRT could stand to pay their records a bit less.) Byrne needed the talking heads to make True Stories (the movie), but it is more of a solo record in alot of ways. He cerrainly seemed to have lost interest at that point. LouieB -

He isn't a member of the band, but any of the additional hired hands that they have from the later years would be fun. This would be a fun reunion to see, but frankly I don't think David Byrne's heart would be in it. He has had any number of opportunities to get the band back together and hasn't. LouieB -
To say education is highly decentralized is an understatement. It needs to be pointed out that NCLB was intitiated by George W Bush, but aided and abetted by the Democrats. Federal aid to education mostly helps low income students and low income districts, but just about everyone gets something. Some districts would be hurting without this money and many students would not get services for special needs without it. I think Sparky is angling for the VP slot on the Ron Paul ticket. Good luck with that. LouieB
