June 1, 1974 (Live) - John Cale, Brian Eno, Kevin Ayres, Nico

I could deal with the badly recorded, but actually the material on side one (the more famous people) sounds uninspired as well. I understand now that Robert Wyatt was part of the scene, but that is no excuse for putting out such a lack luster piece of work. I am actually shocked that this is also on CD. I sort of figured this was a vinyl era one off that was a nice try back in the day. I can't believe anyone would want to listen to it now. Frankly I am surpised to find out that anyone has heard it. He may be (or have been) a fine musician in his own right, but this album stinks. There are few times that a pool of talent this large is used to so little effect. LouieB -

I heard this recently. I had a vinyl copy that we sold at the CHIRP record sale. I listened to it because I was curious and didn't keep it because it is CRAP!! Not only is it not the best intro to any of these artists with the exception of Kevin Ayers who I know nothing about and hope never to hear again, it is a cheap ass one off where these three artists help out their "friend" to little effect. Sometimes a project like this should remain obscure; and this is one of these times. Total junk, and not even good enough to keep for the sake of Nico, Cale, and Eno. That's my opinion. Oh yea -
Since I have never been able to watch an entire Sopranos episode you won't be spoiling anything for me....when was this and what number was it? LouieB

I was actually joking, but see Mr. Heartbreak below for some serious shit. Artie Shaw stopped recording in the mid 1950s after having had a stellar career in the 30s and 40s because he simply couldn't stand the music business. He lived until a few years ago and never really went back. Amazing story and an amazing career. It is not the kind of music you will like right off the top because it will seem dated because essentially it is your grand or great grandparents music. So be careful, you might actually like it!!! Jazz gets alot of my attention too. I often say rather snarkily (is that

Time to get with it comrade..1!! (Have you heard Artie Shaw??) LouieB

Who are you?? Finally someone willing to stand up in the face of the ongoing dispute over digital vs analog music and telling people it is nearly impossible to hear the difference (there are other reasons for liking analog music however...) I have seen a number of the bands mentioned and none of them have stayed with me. Joanna Newsome I have seen and she is more interesting in person than on record. She has also disappeared off the scene. I bought her live album two years ago and have yet to crack the plastic wrap. I saw the Dirty Projectors and while they are interesting there was nothi

Now I remember why I was an independent all those years.

Supporting local Green candidates is not a bad idea at some level. I do it. On the national level it makes far less sense. I think this is about getting people fired up however. Obama is doing it to the gay community over DOMA and Don't ask. Nothing is easy in this country (maybe any country, but some have figured out that universal healthcare is a good thing so I don't know....) and this is among the worst. I don't really believe that Obama is playing Chess on this, I believe he wants something to hang his hat on, despite being stabbed in the back by more Dems than is believable. This -

This totally sucks, except you have it slightly wrong. The reason the Democratic White House is thinking of dropping the public option is that the "independents" are turning on the public option because the right wing is telling so many lies about health care reform. I don't disagree that the Dems are being spineless, but those individual voters who identify as Democratic are NOT the majority of people and therefore blow with the wind. Remember there would be no talk about public option or any other type of reform (preexisting conditions, etc.) if Sarah Palin and McCain were on office. -
Yea I would say it would be a don't miss. Califone did those Deceleration CDs which were music to movies (which I didn't see), but playing to their own movie...that should be a kick. LouieB

I had some snarky comment about the fact that the Dead kept touring was because they were all so stoned they didn't know what a drag it was. (Oh that WAS the snarky comment.... ) The Dead certainly did write the book on the constant touring. Certainly the Dead did okay on record sales though and they did get some airplay, but touring made them millionaires. Jazz is certainly some of my first choice of stuff to thrown on the box in my spare time. I bought an Artie Shaw CD the other day, I MUST be getting OLD. LouieB

Someone with some cojones should make a movie of Visions of Gerard instead....!! Will watch the trailer sometime when I feel less scared. Heartbeat was crap. And, yea I think Coppola ain't gonna make it. Frankly it would be better unmade anyway. LouieB

I bought the new Magnolia Electric Company and have yet to listen to it, but yea, I like Jason Molina, he seems like the kind of guy we all should support. Rough time it is I think, totally agree I got Paste because No Depression closed down. Paste is beyond horrible. Sufyan needs go get back on the horse and finish the last 48 states. Not that I personally care that much, since Illinoise was...well let's let it go...it and Bon Iver were similar to me, although to be honest, Sufyan has much more talent (if a severe lack of swing). Some of his songs are very compelling and some not. Bon

I still can't tell...is this a documentary or a re-enactment or a "I'm Not There" reimagining? (See thread on don't like music...) I can't tell if I am supposed to be excited, sceptical, or appalled. I feel a bit of all three. actually. For those who have not read them, the Selected Letters of Jack Kerouac edited by Ann Charters are well worth reading and maybe worth more than seeing this movie. Volume 1 is before he is famous and Volume 2 after On the Road is published. Great stuff. The actual novel Big Sur is not among Kerouac's best by a long shot. Meanwhile good luck to Jay Farrar.

Number 2 first again. I was going to start a thread a few years back talking about all the records I own by people NO ONE is interested in, talking about, or listening to anymore. I have tons of them. (Hell just look at who died this week that no one wants to talk about...!!) That is the nature of the music biz, agreed. Someday I will actually write that thread, but frankly with the number or albums I have, it is simply too much work. It would take several threads actually. First point, I don't believe this for a minute. Most people do approach new music with the intention of either likin

what is this movie about?? LouieB

Since some of this is about my commment let's go to point two first and then back to point one. I have gotten to the point where I only like to go see local and smalltime bands since it is easier to deal with the audience and expectations are somewhat lower and these type of groups desperately need support. These groups were hit hard by rising gas prices, lower record sales, and the stiff competition that is always part of the music biz. As to the first part, I have been ripped on this before here and time is finally bearing out some of my sentiment. Getting overly excited about the next

Good point...starting to look a bit like that NOW actually. LouieB -
I talked to Jim Becker at Pitchfork. He told me there are a couple dates in Chicago at Museum of Contemporary Art. Should be a great place for this (not for those who like to stand though.) The auditorium at the MCA has great sight lines and a big stage so that the screen will be visable to everyone. Jim is very enthusiastic about this project. Not sure the dates, but sometime in October. LouieB

Wow, sad. That makes four this week. LouieB

I was going to start a thread on this, because I really wanted to like this (same as I felt about Bon Iver last year), but I think this is simply the best we are going to get at this point (although I think this is better than Bon Iver....!!!) Somehow it just isn't even worth going into that deeply. LouieB

I miss the good old days when you could turn on the radio and hear new music, not that you can't do that now I suppose, but so much of of what gets played on the radio sucks. I guess it sucks getting old, I dunno. I continue to buy lots of recorded music (never download) and don't listen to it as fast as I buy it. I mean I bought a copy of St. Vincent at Pitchfork and have listened to it a couple times and keep thinking....Is this good or is it just mediocre and is this the best there is or what?? Tbere was an excellent article in the New Yorker last week about the the music biz and ti

I don't know, considering how few folks here stopped in on either the Mike Seeger or Rashied Ali threads to remember them or not that many more stopped in on the Les Paul thread it is really not surprising your students don't know who he is. Most younger folks have no idea. My kids tell their peers they like Bob Dylan and they don't know who they are talking about. Naybe Bob is happy he is no longer recognized. Might be a good thing. edit-regarding the thread about I don't like music as much as I used to..etc. Back in the old days, like when I was the age of Beltman's students, we al -
Rudeness is just part of the being at a rock show. It is almost as if it is expected. Wilco fans are no more or no less rude than anyone else. I have been known to let smaller fans stand in front of me and I am only 5 foot 7. LouieB
