  1. Amazing, but a little staid in places..the horns add alot. The original LPs has more than enough of the original show to be good. Not much is really added with the jams, they are in fact pretty boring considering the talent involved. LouieB
  2. Ooops.... Yea, the CD box set is pretty cool, but some of the extras are just filler, particularly some of the lame jamming, which is worth listening to exactly once. Some of the other extras are pretty cool though as I recall. (Frankly the three LP set from way back when is cool enough.) LouieB
  3. Can you send me this? I just would like to hear a not so great version, just for the hell of it. I think it is a pretty hard song to make sound lousy. LouieB
  4. Yea, that sort of undermines the entire premise of the article. Most rock musicians can crank out Roll Over Beethoven or some other old chestnut for the fun of it. John Lennon made a couple albums of rock standards himself. LouieB
  5. The guy can talk.....not to worry..he is going to be elected... LouieB
  6. Nah..wasn't really interested in which was better, they all have something to recommend them... Thanks..that's what I thought. I wonder what happened with the Cale's version for the soundtrack. Actually if there is a version I like less than the others I have heard it is the Wainwright one, but it still isn't bad. I remember waiting until the end of the movie to check out the song credits to make sure it was the Cale version. Well if you slur the words enough no one will ever know. I heard that song for years and never realized what Cohen was singing about (it is about Janis Joplin a
  7. I have to admit, the kd lang version is one I have not heard....I was actually surprised that the Wainwright one didn't get a mention, it seems to be out there alot also. (Isn't it on the soundtrack album of Shreck instead of the Cale one...not totally sure about this... since I don't have that CD...and why would I, I no longer have small children.) LouieB
  8. Don't miss the John Cale version...my personal favorite...since it is how i heard it the first time. LouieB
  9. Two things..... Hasn't REM been kind of lame for a long time... And haven't we all known Stipe was gay for even longer?? LouieB
  10. Yea, looks good to me....the "young" Wilco... LouieB
  11. We talk about this song from time to time here and clearly it is now a famous song. Most of this I knew, but I never really knew why Cale's version was somewhat different..now I know. (Of course it is ridiculous to think this is the first rock standard, since some of the songs of Little Richard, Chuck Berry and such things as Blue Suede Shoes are certainly rock standards...as is Proud Mary, some of the Beatles, Stones, etc., but what the heck.) 13. I guess we will just have to make do with Pitchfork... LouieB
  14. Doesn't everyone have a fanpage?? Thanks to Sandy, isn't it? LouieB
  15. Recently I got into an "argument" with someone here about Mike Bloomfield and that your fairly average musician can now play like he did. Interestingly enough Bloomfield did not get a single mention here yet, for what I would say are obvious reasons. Not because he was not great in his time, but because his career was spotty at best and his playing skills eclipsed by many others in the meantime. A few more mentions.... Hounddog Taylor Doc Watson Tony Rice Steve Stills Roger McGuinn John Fahey Charlie Christian John Hartford Mike Bloomfield Pete Townsend Frankly the list is sort of endl
  16. A young jazzman that is worth checking out (and which I had forgotten about in earlier posts, but discovered again when looking on my shelves) is Don Byron. He has done an interesting variety of stuff. LouieB
  17. Go with the Jimmy Smith on Blue Note as opposed to the Verve and other material. There are many many good Blue Note Smiths to choose from Live at Smalls, Home Cookin, Back at the Chicken Shack, etc. etc. I have seen the Deep Blue Trio at jazz fest. They are quite good. Bobby Broom has been kicking around for years, but seems to have found a home in this group. LouieB
  18. No offense, but you are a bit late to this party. Jay has been gone so long I don't even know how we can discuss his participation in the band, except when I see Wilco I do think about the riffs he left from Summerteeth that the newer members now get to play. Seeing Nels when he is hot and seeing the band really dig playing keeps me from caring what happened to Jay. It was fun while it lasted, but it is over. Most of us have gotten over it long ago. 19. Yea, the aliens are sticking their fingers in their auditory appendages from the constant repetion on the classic rock stations.....that and Lola.... LouieB
  20. Somehow if I never hear that again it will be okay...(I don't dislike it, just heard it a thousand times..) LouieB
  21. My old CD player broke down...any suggestions on a new one? I am really crushed, it was a really nice Phillips and I figured it would work forever.... So now I can only play LPs.... LouieB
  22. I agree about Abercombie. I saw him in the last few years with Dave Holland (I think..can't remember excactly.) Saw him decades ago with Towner, great show. Wide Sargasso Sea is one of my favorite albums of the theirs on ECM (don't ding me for spelling errors..). While Abercrombie isn't "mellow" in some respects, he is certainly not a guitar hero in the hard rock school of guitarists, so by contrast he is sort of mellow. Weber's records are also excellent. Most of this stuff has fallen into disfavor though in general, but I would still recommend it. As I mentioned, much of it is available
  23. The double hillarious part of it is her working up the crowd to see what is now certainly a very famous (and dead) group of musicians. At the time I am sure people were just acting cool and were used to seeing such folks come through clubs. LouieB
  24. At least you admit it..... I love LPs but the fact is they don't play in cars or when you are walking around, riding the el, or excercising at the gym (something I don't do but lots of folks do.) I dig my iPod even though I don't use it that often. LouieB
