  1. This is quite true, but most groups up until the mid-60s were putting out albums with singles fodder..that's where the money was. LouieB
  2. Uh no......LouieB is my actual name, actually.... But I do know John Boston very well and help him tape stuff; if you read the first post I think that is clear. Look for his (with my assistance) peice on GloNo in a few weeks. I wll post it up if this thread is still around. John was at SXSW, but I was not. Maybe next year. LouieB
  3. At least tell us why.... LouieB
  4. dulcimer.... hammered dulcimer. LouieB
  5. As usual we are talking to ourselves about this stuff.... I am going to try and make the Q&A and performance on Tuesday. Laurie Anderson is also in town for a free Q&A, but it is already booked up. I have a very cool LP of George Lewis doing solo trombone, back from the days when he still lived in Chicago. LouieB
  6. Finally a book about the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians is being published. After ten years of research and writing, AACM member and trombone player George Lewis has penned what looks like a pretty good book. There is an article about it in The Reader and also one by Tribune jazz critic Howard Reich in The Tribune. This looks like a good one to be sure, both documenting the history of the AACM from someone who was there. Lewis is also going to be in Chicago to discuss the book this week, followed by a performance. I hope I can make this.... LouieB
  7. Notorious Byrd Brothers is sort of a transitional album acually. David Crosby was about done. Strangely no mention of two Goffin/King tunes Goin' Back and Wasn't Born to Follow (later featured in Easy Rider) and the also quite good Get to You. LouieB
  8. They are all good, but the first one is particularly good and more accoustic. All can be gotten dirt cheap at any used record store that has LPs. Jorma's solo albums such as Quah is also quite good. LouieB
  9. who isn't somewhat derivitive these days....they certainly are a scrappy bunch of guys, just trying to make it on their own terms. That would be sweet.... LouieB
  10. Since I don't download music I guess I can't vote....its kind of like living in Michigan or Florida... LouieB
  11. Several hundreds of bands.....it was the 60s after all. LouieB
  12. Right......whatever you say.... At least I know they are two albums I should have heard...then again I have known that for many years and have never done anything about it.... LouieB
  13. I wish they would just go back to being a talent search show (frankly I am still waiting for my USA for Africa tee shirt). Although the footage was certainly heart tugging, when you realize we are spending 12 billion a month on the goddam Iraq war (our money after all), then you realize we could buy enough mosquito netting to cover the entire continant of Africa with far less than that and fund the entire AIDS drug bill as well. We are all fools, let's face it. Not to mention the fact that American Idol makes far more a season than they raise during this fund raising effort. LouieB
  14. Bee Thousand Alien Lanes.. Neither of which I have ever heard..... but i know I am supposed to like them... LouieB
  15. Hey no problem...if there is still someone on the planet who cares about the Doors it is okay with me.... Actually I have ended up supporting them in the past, but frankly they don't do much for me anymore...however I never tire of the Byrds, particularly the pre-flyte sessions. LouieB
  16. Not sure why I am bothering....the Byrds... LouieB
  17. No shit!!! I rewatched "the Kids Are Alright" the other night and except for the fact that Ray Davies is a hell of a songwriter, the Who blow the Kinks out of the water in just about every other respect. LouieB
  18. No offense, but you have to be kidding.... But then again maybe you didn't grow up having to listen to the Doors be played to death on the radio. The importance of the Byrds can't ever be minimized. LouieB
  19. Lower than Monster....that ain't good.... LouieB
  20. No clue..can you hum a few bars..?? LouieB
  21. On the original vinyl.....(for all you vinyl freaks...) and in mono... well actually these cuts were originally on 78s I think, but this is the first LP reissue... LouieB
  22. "The Americian Friend" Great movie also and also in English. LouieB
  23. Strangely none of this seems to be happening for Paul....wonder what is going on? LouieB
  24. Strawberry Fields, In My Life, many others... LouieB
