Yea, I agree. No Depression covered music that was not being covered by most of the mainstream magazines. I would glance through any of the other music mags on the newstands and read the reviews and never want to buy hardly anything I read about there, but ND always covered enough different stuff that i always wanted to buy more albums than I knew I could afford, including reissues that most other magazines didn't give a shit about. Sure the whole roots rock thing got a bit out of hand (the ads in ND were sometimes both humorous and somewhat silly) and even ND started to cover a much w

I haven't watched this footage yet, but I would guess he is not so rich compared to Neil Young and Bob Dylan. LouieB

Is this Tanglewood show the New England show instead of The Pines? I used to go to Tanglewood to see classical stuff as a kid. LouieB

That was fun.....bought some CDs and LPs and chatted a bit. Lauries was mobbed, but then Lincoln Square is like Wicker Park North now, so the streets in general are packed. Let's see, got the new Justin Earle (new), Levon Helm, Buddy Guy, Songs: Ohia, Gary Louis (all used) and then on LP, Ella Fitzgerald, Dillard, Hartford, Dillard, and free Columbia/Epic with music from the labels.... ....Putting aside the issue of whether or not LPs sound better than CDs, it appeared that the record companies are courting the LP crowd, since most people who buy LPs also buy CDs and tend to buy music in

Yea, but even they let him sing on occasion...go figure. I actually do agree with this (although I have been enjoying M.Ward's cover of one of his songs.) The movie about him is one of the saddest and most tragic films I have seen in a long time. And the comment about rap is pretty much true also.... LouieB -
I was up earlier also on VC I think, but had gone back to bed. Our birds went crazy though and I had to get back up and reassure them. TG in Carbondale definitely felt it... LouieB

In the obit today it said that actually Danny asked Bruce to join his band when he had one with origial E Street drummer Vinnie Lopez. They were bandmates a long long time....(and as always the guy was about my age....) edit...I just noticed the subheading for this thread....turns out Danny was just a mere 4 months older than I am.... This is very fucked up news......very very sad. Danny was the one constant with the E street band from the beginning and an incredible musician. Very sad. LouieB

Can your wife get copies? I didn't get a copy while there because my friend John neeeded a ride home to Wilmette and there was a crowd trying to get a copy. I do want one and figure I will run by the Seminary Bookstore some day if all else fails. Strangely I have not been to the new Velvet. I just keep going to see all this indie rock and alt.country crap all the time (just kididng of course...). I did walk by it the other day while in the area however. It has certainly become a more eclectic type of venue since relocating, which does speak to the issue of the northsiders becoming more i

I did attend the discussion and short musical program at the Cultural Center yesterday. It was a total mixed bag. The moderator had a screwy agenda and clearly didn't have all that much interest in the actual music that the AACM makes or in the history of the organization. She was more interested in the structural issues and took a rather didactic tone about all this, including giving long winded intros of George Lewis as well as Douglas Ewart and Nicole Mitchell. All have stellar and interesting backgrounds, but by trying to answer some rather academic questions, all three had little illum

The Waco and Felice Brothers and Justin Townes Earle

Yea, I am part of John's Whiskey Bender crew...that's where the confusion is, as is the fact that it is John's piece that will be up on GloNo. Check out some of John's other work on GloNo. We (John and crew, but mostly John) has done some great stuff with other artists. And yes, John is a great and generous guy, giving alot of PR to groups basically for free. (Give GloNo some credit here too...) We talk alot about the state of the music industry and how tough it is for mid-level and new artists. Just a strange story that I hope I can talk about.... When Gary Louris was in town recently -
Not relying on my memory (which ain't so good anymore) but on the internet, the piece "Donald Duck meets Miles Davis" is on the excellent double LP (and I assume CD) All the Magic/The One and Only from 1983 (I retrieved the album for this info.) It has a sort of avant-garde marching band type of vibe. As I recall it was his first major solo album. He put out others, some under the name Brass Fantasy (I have an album titled Twilight Dreams under this title.) Lester was sort of the jokester of the Art Ensemble. He always wore a white lab coat, unlike everyone else who wore African garb an
