Exactly...and conveniently located if you are crashing at renic's pad.... Yea, I have to admit, I have not eaten there in years (I used to eat there more when it was the hippie Bread Shop Kitchen, but that was before many here were born.) Frankly it isn't all that close to the Riv and for the price, the food at Blind Faith is probably better and the wait staff at the Heartland just as bad, but not as stuck up I am sure. The Heartland is kind of a fun leftie experience also. And the Red Line Tap just around the corner not a bad drinking spot.... LouieB

The Great White Wonder that is bootlegging
LouieB replied to Analogman's topic in Someone Else's Song
Yea, I was really pissed. I left it at a motel. It had the dust cover and everything and was pretty cheap used on Amazon or something. The paperback is fine too, but the hardcover is really nice. LouieB -

Being in Lakeview/"Boystown" the Chicago Diner is bound to be crowded much of the the time. Actually if you have the time and ablility to get there Blind Faith is really the best reasonable veggie restaurant in town (although it is in Evanston.) I have eaten there many times and it has always been at least very good, if not excellent. (I worked at the Heartland back in the 70s briefly but rarely go there anymore. It is still pretty "hippie." The Great White Wonder that is bootlegging
LouieB replied to Analogman's topic in Someone Else's Song
Yea, my copy is loaned to Melissa, one of the clerks at Lauries; I need to get it back (I lost my first copy, a nice hardcover version on a vacation to the Black Hills...). Melissa's uncle gave her a couple cartons of LP boots, that she seemed not to know what to do with. Hopefully she read some of the book and realized they were worth keeping rather than putting out on e-bay. LouieB -
I keep hoping to run across this record used....sounds like something I would like.... As for looks, Amy Winehouse is just plain creepy.....she is just one step away from Britany on the creepy scale. LouieB

The Great White Wonder that is bootlegging

Unlike Ten of Swords, which would be a real find, the Great White Wonder was a very low tech affair, with rather poor sound. I have a tape of it somewhere. There were serveral versions and all sounded basically like shit....but they did have cool stuff on it that had not been heard before. There were several other associated Dylan boots that were also just white covers with stuff stamped on the cover. All fun, all low tech. Clifton Heylin's book Bootleg is the last word on the subject of bootlegs....a great read and full of good information on the subject. LouieB -

The Great White Wonder that is bootlegging

The Great White Wonder was sold from behind the counter at many record stores back in the day.... LouieB -
The Red Eye says that the Ethiopian Restaurant, Demera right across from the Riv could be the best in town. I have not been there, but I suspect it is worth a try. There are a couple others up Broadway including the old standbye Ethiopian Diamond, but this is literally across the street. Further up the Redline is the Heartland for vegetarians, although it is not stricklly veggie (they have buffalo burgers for example.) LouieB

Caitlin Cary's post Whiskeytown albums are quite good. Rod Stewart just got lame, that's all. LouieB

Before this is over Grace will be the most reissued album of all time.......not bad for a recording artist who had exactly one studio album during his lifetime... LouieB

While Bobby cracked up as an adult, he was still a major force in bringing chess into the mainstream. I used to read his columns in Boys Life back in the 60s. Sadly he became a nut case. LouieB

Acctually this is one of the best albums that either of them have (or had) released in awhile (I realize this is years ago too...) While Cale has put out interesting albums, I would still go with Reed, simply because in general he is a better songwritter. Cale has done plenty of interesting stuff however. LouieB

Its simple really....Whiskeytown is a band, Ryan Adams is an individual. Ryan has some baggage, Whiskeytown was just trying to make music. LouieB

Yup...that;s a good one.....been there many times for a conference. Haven't stayed in a room. Huge place though and very nice. A bit of a haul to the el but not bad. LouieB
