OH man.....Aretha wouldn't have been caught dead singing crap like that.... LouieB

Wow, brutal, but not off the mark. Funny actually, and sad. LouieB

I went and listened to this on YouTube after you posted this. Great vocal, kinda stupid song. She had a great voice, maybe as good as Aretha (debateable, but great), the actual songs she was given to sing weren't even close. LouieB

She also recorded with the Art Ensemble. LouieB

Her voice was great but her career, not so much. It is sad however. Was for a time married to Lester Bowie of the Art Ensemble. Apparently also recored with the World Saxophone Quartet. LouieB

Okay, that is kind of nice that we cleared this up. LouieB

Maybe I was flashing back on Jon Brion or Andrew Bird. Seemed like he was a bit augmented, but you are right he is a very good guitar player. (There are alot of folks using loops these days.) I could well be wrong. LouieB

Nels has not played Chicago in awhile, but then again the rest of the band hasn't played with their other groups either. I was thinking about that the other day actually. Would love to see Nels again. LouieB -
Last time I saw Justin (about a year ago) he was playing with pre-recorded tracks so that it sounded like three guitars (because it was.) He may not have been doing that the night you saw him. He is a good picker though. LouieB

That's cool. LouieB

These guys are all approaching 70 years old. NO one can sing like they used to at that age, even if they took the best of care of their pipes. LouieB My wife said the same thing..... LouieB

I thought Roger sounded and looked great. LouieB

In Chicago this was broadcast on free TV on ION. Go figure. LouieB

I would feel better about aging rock heros if some of them didn't wear wigs or dye their hair. Kudos to Keith for his real hair as opposed to Mick. I thought that the best overall performance of the night (I hate to say this) was Clapton, who did a nice accoustic number, a reasonable MOR radio number and then the umteenth version of Crossroads and then got off. Kudos to the Who as well, who over stayed their welcome though. And Roger Waters or whatever stand in for Pink Floyd that was for being the most boring band in the world. I missed Bruce at the beginning I guess and had to sit throu

I just read this obit in the NY Times. Alot of this stuff I did not know before. Perhaps someone will find it interesting. LouieB Ravi Shankar, Sitarist Who Introduced Indian Music to the West, Dies at 92 By ALLAN KOZINN Ravi Shankar, the Indian sitarist and composer whose collaborations with Western classical musicians as well as the Beatles and other rock stars helped foster a worldwide appreciation of India’s traditional music, died on Tuesday in San Diego. He was 92. Mr. Shankar died in a hospital near his home, his family said in a statement, adding that he had suffered from upper r

see above....that was why I said "too". The guy was amazing really. I recently came across a two LP set on Apple that I had never seen before and bought it. I have not yet even lsitened to it, but will soon. LouieB

I dunno...seems like a no brainer. At this point everyone is going to hurt some. That includes the freaking military and the rich. Clearly there willl be entitlement cuts, but those should not come without some amount of pain from the sectors of our society that seem to be doing pretty well. (We have to stop being the police of the world, that's clear, at least to me.) LouieB

Also need to pull out my Shankar records as well, though I don't play sitar. Ravi was certainly the first super star of world music. I was lucky enough to see him open for George Harrison on the Dark Horse tour. RIP Ravi. The footage of him at concert for Bangladesh is also pretty magnificant. LouieB

We keep giving the right wing all they want also. The problem is that we give everyone what everyone wants without a serious discussion of the consequences on either side. In communities where the military holds sway, a scaling back of the military will have drastic effects, in comunities where they rely on farm subsidies, that will have a drastic effect, in communities that need prisions for jobs, closing them will have drastic effects, and so on. Everyone likes the government when it gives them what they want. That's the way this shit works. It has little to do with right or left. It

Wasnt sure I was going to make it, but last night saw Kelly Hogan with Robbie Fulks at the Hideout. LouieB

It may well be too early to talk about Hillary for president, but everyone is despite the fact that the inaguration for Obama's second term has not even occured. In this ADD environment, the hype is just unbelieveable. Romney has still not come to terms with losing and we are already talking about this. LouieB

Not the HIllary for President thread I was expecting. LouieB

You may be right. It just seems that the focus here on VC has gotten narrow that's all. I mean there was little interest in talking about Graham Parker too. And I am not just complaining about the treads I go to. That's why I posted. I was not even going to venture an opinion on Tom Ze until I realized no one had any comment. No biggie. LouieB

I would have been surprised had you expressed this enthusiasm about Scott Walker's new disk. Hey, Dave Brubeck died and only a handful of us gave a rats ass about that, so go figure. Not everyone can care about everything. I am amazed he is cranking out a new one actually. LouieB
