  1. I really liked this. For me, the film - particularly the Cate Blanchett sequences - recalled both 8-1/2 and Stardust Memories. Yeah, the film is more about themes of art and identity than about Bob Dylan's life, but, still, it doesn't hurt to be a Dylan fan going in. However, that said, I'd probably recommend this to anyone, Dylan fan or not. In a lot of ways, it's just a beautiful film.
  2. The Twins will get something good, but they're not going to get Joba, and certainly not Joba and Cano together. It's not going to happen. The Twins don't have all the leverage here. They're going to be in a position where they have to make a deal or see Santana walk as a free agent and get nothing for him - like Torii Hunter just did. Santana wants a contract like Zito got last year. The Twins are offering 4 years at $20 million per. A deal is going to be necessary, and the Twins might have to settle for a little less than all of the Yankees (or Red Sox) top young talent.
  3. Is this sarcastic, or no? Supposedly Cano and Joba are "untouchables." I know how good Santana is, but I would hate to see the Yankees part with either one of them, let alone both. Don't forget about the World Champions and their young stars/prospects in all of this. Boston Herald
  4. Just returned from this. Pretty, pretty good. Lumet is solid. Philip Seymour Hoffman is a great creep.
  5. Biograph or Blood on the Tracks version? I like both, but the Biograph version is my all-time favorite song.
  6. "Song For Bobby" - Cat Power "Shadow Falls" - Hello, Blue Roses "A Little Lost " - Jens Lekman "Two Hearts in 3/4 Time" - The Avalanches "Going Down" - White Williams
  7. I just listened to Buhloone Mind State yesterday for the first time in maybe five years or so. Great album. Great song.
  8. Quiet around here. Rollins wins NL MVP. Ho-hum. What about the Yankees and Red Sox? Well, Jon Heyman from SI was just on WFAN and he said that he believes Johan Santana will be traded before the season begins and that - surprise, surprise - he will likely be dealt to the Red Sox or Yankees. He threw these out: Clay Buchholz and Coco Crisp (and likely an unnamed third player) for Santana Phil Hughes or Ian Kennedy and Melky Cabrera (and likely an unnamed third player) for Santana He said Robinson Cano and Joba Chamberlain are not available as part of any trade. Who gets Santana? Red
  9. I know the thread was not even originally about this, but I'd like to weigh in on the Let It Die v. The Reminder issue. The Reminder is good. No question. However, for me, Let It Die is more enjoyable to listen to. There is a certain lounge-y, or even retro, sound to some of the tracks on that record that I really like. Also, more generally, it's simply a more upbeat record. I have nothing against downbeat music, but I found the The Reminder too downbeat, too spare, at least in comparison to the previous record. Of course, this is all subjective. If someone was to say - as some have - The
  10. I clicked on CNN's website and did a double take - is that Neil Young? Sure enough, it was. Here's the related article: Neil Young doing good
  11. I feel a little less like a jerk now. Message boards can lead to all kinds of confusion.
  12. London too. EDIT: I wasn't trying to make light of either of the above (London, Mumbai) when making my convenience store "joke." I apologize if I was unfamiliar with the "7-11" terminology. I'm American, I'm only used to hearing about 9-11. When I saw 7-11, my immediate thought was that Zen was making a joke. Again, I didn't mean to be insensitive. Sorry. I'm embarrassed for being the self-absorbed American.
  13. Few people know that the Carlyle Group invested heavily in the development of, and now draw profits from, both the Big-Gulp and the Slurpee.
  14. I'm not saying this is the authoritative word, but it's worth looking at... Popular Mechanics - Debunking 9/11 Conspiracy Theories It's been often said, but I think it bears repeating/asking again: Am I supposed to believe the Bush Administration, which has a pretty good track record of screwing things up, was competent enough and skilled enough to pull off this cover-up? ...or what they witness with their own two eyes.
  15. Brady has hair plugs. I can't respect him. I'd let Steve Grogan QB my team over Brady anyday. Man, if he had Stallworth and Moss to throw to...
  16. Rumor: The (Rubin) record has the tentative title of Anchor, and the three tracks so far worked on are:
  17. This proves nothing. He was probably just trying to impress the ladies and started buying larger shoes. A man who wears size 13's demands attention. I stuff my shoes with half a roll of paper towels to make my size 12's fit. Sure, I wake up next to a lot of disappointed ladies, but I rarely wake up alone. Will the persecution of Barry Bonds never end?
  18. McCartney has written so many great songs that he deserves better than to be made fun of by a little punk like myself. Nevertheless, I cringed when I saw his (I think) newest video: A very bad song made worse by an awful video. Why did he have to drag poor Ringo into this mess? (Ringo cameo at :55) Other highlight at 1:50 - Macca mackin'!
  19. Anyone listen to this? I haven't listened to it forever, but I remember liking some of the songs on there - Dylan, Keith Richards in particular.
  20. I think so. I hope so. But it's all in the execution. It could be great. It could be embarrassing. I'd bet on great (or at least very good) though.
  21. This has potential to say the least. I hope he asks Tweedy to contribute. I know from his autobiography that Dylan was aware of Mermaid Avenue, but I'm uncertain what he thought of it. I think he wrote that he would have done it differently than Wilco/Bragg, but does that mean he didn't like it? I don't know. I always liked Dylan's messy hotel room performance of Lost Highway that was captured in Dont Look Back. I love Hank. I love Dylan. I like Jack White. Again, if done right, this could be great. Thanks for posting the article.
