  1. Funnily enough I was playing that Jan & Lorraine record earlier this week, good choice. Speaking of female duos with only one record, here's a sister act that released their sole record in 1969: Wendy & Bonnie - Genesis http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pxzvdLSi5AA
  2. Good list Louie, most of those cats are in my collection too. I'll add a few more to the pile as this thread goes along. I'll start off with Willie P. Bennett. This guy was from my hometown of Toronto, even here he wasn't well known outside musician circles. I first heard about him when he was part of Fred Eaglesmith's band, later discovering he'd done some solo records. His '70s records are really great folk-country-roots records that are sadly out-of-print. Fans of Townes Van Zandt, The Band, Jerry Jeff Walker, et al will probably dig this guy. Discography: 1975 - Tryin' to Start
  3. Willie P. Bennett - Tryin' to Start Out Clean
  4. Great doc about obsessive record collectors. The director is also one of the subjects so you get an honest look at the toll this kind of obsessive collecting does to ones personal life. There's a few semi-famous people in the film such as Harvey Pekar and Don McKellar.
  5. My thinking was we'd have a thread that would encompass the overlooked, forgotten, and downright obscure. If nobody else starts it, I'll begin such a thread soon.
  6. Maybe we should have one thread where we can post about overlooked artists and records. That way people can discover all this stuff in one place, would also make for a good reference thread over time.
  7. Same here. We could have hundreds, if not thousands of threads for overlooked artists frankly. Some of those Gene Clark solo records are true gems, particular faves of mine are 'White Light' and 'Roadmaster' and the Dillard & Clark album 'The Fantastic Expedition of Dillard & Clark'. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mT8zT6Jz9lU
  8. I've only listened to it once all the way through so too soon to say. But first impressions, it might be one of my faves of the year.
  9. Cody ChesnuTT - Black Skin No Value Van Hunt - What Were You Hoping For?
  10. Anyone who saw the last episode of Dexter could answer that one. But, yeah, pretty weird item for someone to bid on.
  11. I've only heard a few songs of his, really don't know much at all. I'm generally more into the '60s-'70s period of Indian pop music.
  12. Joe Meek - Freakbeat: 30 Freakbeat, Mod & R&B Nuggets Asha Bhosle - The Playback Queen: The Very Best of Asha Bhosle
  13. Not so sure about that Crow. These days it's the older folks that are buying the records--hence the constant reissue of "classic" records--the kliddies often just download them for free. Generalizations for sure, but some truth in there too, especially with a band like Wilco who aren't aimed at a teeny bopper market.
  14. Good to see this thread resurrected. I'll add another of my favorite Brazilian artists to the list, Ronnie Von, particularly his late 60s to early 70s records: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJYdWwSGTFc
  15. Johnny Burnette Trio - Rockbilly Boogie Jimmy Reed - The Essential Boss Man: The Very Best of the Vee-Jay Years, 1953-1966.
  16. Great album indeed, and no matter how overplayed the title cut is on the radio, it's hard to deny it's awesomeness.
  17. Up until now I'd only ever heard Westerberg's name mentioned as the inspiration for "The Lonely 1." The Neil Young suggestion makes sense to me and could totally fit. Phil Ochs I'm not so sure as Phil died in '76, a bit too early for Jeff to have probably seen in concert, unless of course the song is complete fiction and not as personal as it seems.
  18. Wow, didn't know about this one. I have all the Ford reissues so I'll definitely be all over this.
  19. The Blue Things - Let The Blue Things Blow Your Mind: The Ultimate Collection 1964 - 1968
  20. I'm pretty sure they only co-wrote 2 songs with Jim so don't expect much Fordesque stuff from these guys. The stuff I know of theirs is poppy and a bit funky, but they don't have the country-soul sound of Ford, or his knack for songwriting. They had a couple decent records in the early 70s, nothing essential mind you.
  21. I do love a lot of the South American psych of that era so this has me curious indeed. There is so many psych reissues out there these days, it's really time consuming to wade through them all. Unfortunately most are quite average. Will keep my eyes open for this one though, the tracks I just previewed sound pretty good.
  22. Great story. I can only imagine what that must have been like for her to hear for the first time.
