QUOTE (bleedorange @ Aug 5 2008, 02:32 PM) * Oprah and Tiger have both achieved fame and celebrity by being great at what they do and constantly raising the bar for themselves and the people in their respective fields. That is why Obama is nothing like those two and shares much more in common with Paris Hilton and Britney Spears. Two celebrities who have nothing to offer anyone. The only similarity between Obama and Oprah & Tiger is their skin color. So, apparently, that is all you care about. i hope so. the idea that obama, though he certainly has his flaws, has one fraction of

"60 Minutes" is rerunning its segment on Bill James tonight.

sky blue sky is a gorgeous work of art. i love it more every day and have been listening to it every day for a long time.
-
oh yah, it was a great welcome -- it really surprised me, i don't think i'd ever seen that before. it might help put the entire team back on track.
-
he looks like a farmer to me (that's a good thing, not bad). no, i missed him sitting in the sand. maybe he didn't like his uniform at the time?

ok, gracias! nothing involving boras would surprise me. if things had been left as they were, with the sox picking up next year's option at the end of the season, boras wouldn't have made a dime. his mind travels tortuous mazes to come up with ways to benefit himself. it might be interesting to see what the nesn guys have to say about this in tonight's pregame. edes won't be one of those interviewed, i don't think, since he's on to a new job as of today with a yahoo sports thing.

huh? translation please.

seconded. he looks really good so far! and he's articulate -- icing on the cake.

oh well. maybe they can auction off his along with trot nixon's and orlando cabrera's and make a bundle for the overtime put in at next year's trade deadline or post-season free-agent gala. p.s. does anyone know if torre will make manny cut his hair, or has torre loosened up a bit since escaping from ny?
-
the team is getting entirely too sober. what's next, pinstripes? who will provide the character? lugo? i don't think so. manny has been a jerk the last few days but i'm STILL going to miss him like crazy!

Beware of who might sit next to you on the bus

do-nothing witnesses usually bother me, a lot, but in this case? the guy was stabbing the other guy in the throat, repeatedly, with a large knife. the victim was dead or dying with the first or second knife plunge. by the time anyone could grasp what was happening, it was too late, and interfering with that maniac likely would have meant more victims. the witnesses deserve a pass on this one. what an exceptionally hideous story. i wish i hadn't read it, but at least i was already in a bad mood. -
oh this is nuts, i'm getting whiplash. (but keep it up, i'm not near a tv.) this is way more than the usual manny. he's sounding like a burnout case, which brings up the question of whether he'll play for anybody next year, deal or no deal. tomorrow i'll be laughing about this, i hope.

don't know about the others, but i have a problem with number 4. it's the only "if" in the list. "if"s aren't allowed.

yah, remy sounded certain during last night's game that manny will be gone by the end of the season at the latest. how much more peaceful can manny get? i mean, his whole persona to me says peace=fun. i can't see him catching a fly ball, climbing the left field wall, and high-fiving a fan someplace else, but maybe he's done with that stuff. i don't think so, though. manny seems to want to find actual peace at only certain times of the year. the rest of it he has a pretty good time. maybe the sox should get him a good therapist.

this is the only aspect of manny being manny that consistently drives me right up the wall. but i still love the guy and want him to stay.

the marlins rent a football stadium? what happened to their series money?

thank you. that's about as pathetic a showing as i'd have imagined. i wonder how many names were on the list. 363? if it was number 7 in the 1940s, i wonder why i have no friends or aunts named nancy. maybe they all live in caves, like i do. in the 1960s paul mccartney sang the line "but everyone knew her as nancy" in a beatles song; i forget which one but think it was on the white album. edit: it was "rocky raccoon."
-
that i never would have guessed. i read the wrong dickens!

yah, and fairly often i end up spelling my name on the phone and saying "N as in Nancy" twice, once for each N. i'm surprised but heartened to hear that most people know how to spell the name Noah (and just this second realized why!). i used to live on a Cowperthwaite Street. man, was that a pain. my neighbor in the flat below me (an old guy) grew up on that street. he said that when he was a kid someone's horse dropped dead on Cowperthwaite Street, the owner pulled the horse's body with the help of several other guys around the corner onto Banks Street, and the red tape process went

i was born a nancy and have never heard it with the quotes. haven't checked a list lately, but it's been about as long as my whole life that i've never seen a baby newly named nancy. my friends and family have picked names like emily, rachel, sophie, noelle, marcia, betsy, venice, on and on and on. also, other than nancy drew, has any character in a book ever been named nancy? it's a limbo name: not old-fashioned enough to become fashionable again, and not clever or different enough to be a contemporary pick. i've become semi-fond of the name anyway because the other one my parents

my mother won't like it that you called her dumb, but don't worry, i'll tell her it's part of your job. one thing the media has done with obama that bugs me is the whole "rock star" or "pop star" spin. it's ridiculously manipulative and has nothing to do with anything.
-
i agree on all counts. and the katie couric thing was most interesting -- confirmation of something many of us suspect but don't get to hear out of a media person's mouth very often, if ever.

i didn't see it but my mother emailed that she thought brokaw treated him badly during the long interview the other day (i assume she meant on Meet the Press). she was furious and said brokaw kept trying to trip him up. i said that's part of brokaw's job. anyway, i sure wish the election were today, now, this minute. for one thing, my mother is 83 and the suspense just might kill her. for another, the talking heads have gone on for so long since the primaries that i can't watch tv anymore for fear one of them will pop up unexpectedly. and for another, if obama wins i can finally en
