i get it. you mean like people they've never met have judged the clintons' marriage?

yes. if you look out your window one day and some guy is measuring your driveway, go out and ask him what he's doing. if he says "i have a right of way here to my woods out back of your house and i'm going to build a road to it," throw him off your property and send him numerous copies of deeds and surveys via registered mail, along with warnings to stay away from house, driveway, yard, and you. -

in It's a Wonderful Life, i love when clarence saves george from killing himself off the bridge, and they're in the bridge house drying off by the stove. clarence, after conferring with joseph above, tells george he's his angel, and george, still in despair, says "yeah, well you look about like the kind of an angel i'd get."

wishing you a magnificent birthday, jeff. after many years of inexplicable oblivion, i discovered your music just about a year ago, and what a great time of non-stop musical discovery this has been for me! thank you so much for that and for all your music to come, wherever it takes you and everyone who loves you, now including me.

"THE ultimate washington insider"? uh, slight exaggeration. come on, he's got a hell of a lot of competition for that label. if some governor with zero washington experience had been chosen, we'd never hear the end of that either. all things considered, still looks like a good choice to me. i don't care who's more of a hothead. biden has a brain in his, and it seems to function a good percentage of the time. wouldn't want to speculate on mccain's percentage, but it seems to sink more nearly every day. so laugh away.

i heard or read somewhere recently that almost wherever you are in the world at any given time, you are never more than six feet away from a spider. i hope i didn't read that here.
-
i think biden is obama's best chance and that what he brings to the ticket will outweigh the liabilities. every other matchup seemed either to highlight obama's short experience in washington or to make obama look like the more experienced on the ticket -- neither a winning scenario. good choice.

i was fond of the "disco sucks" t-shirt a friend gave me in the late '70s. it was orange, with "disco sucks" and a guy barfing in black.

no. that looks even harder than cooking, and i can't cook never mind knit. some very nice things here, i must say! analogman, i wish you'd post photos of the '60s/'70s yarn backpack. it is impossible to imagine.

i REALLY wish i took spanish in high school because most of the places i want to visit are spanish-speaking, i like the sound of it, the people i've met who speak it are down to earth and at the same time kind of humorous, and there are at least three spanish speakers in my state. maybe four. plenty of french speakers live or visit here, and after taking french for five years in school, it's doing me very little good. basically the same hand charades work here with french speakers that work in mexico when i communicate with spanish speakers there. the spanish speakers seem more patient

i never had an avatar anywhere until i discovered how to do it on this board about a month ago, so i can't keep one for very long; it has to change every few days or weeks according to whim. right now it's me -- 9 years ago! earlier it was an antique two-sided sign from a doctor's office (doc is in please be seated, doc is out will return at . . .) because until recently i had an antiques shop. there's so much material i might start changing it every day.

llyn, you've got my thoughts, but you wrote them better!

you read my mind with this reply, i kid you not. i came up with that response and planned to post it as soon as i finished reading. not the last part, but the rest of it. you must be pre-psychic.

hey, nicely put. those are the definitions i've always read/heard/gone by. there is a big difference between the two, imo. p.s. edit: as an agnostic, i am no more an atheist than i am a practicing catholic, jew, muslim, jehovah's witness, et al.
-
wait, agnostics doubt the existence of god but consider it a possibility . . . no? apparently i need to look up "atheist" again. every atheist i have ever known (or read) believes there is no god. period.

bravo and amen.

oh thank you! you know, i'm not sure he ever recovered from crashing into toronto's new and lethal scoreboard in 2005.

i wouldn't be able to side with anyone -- i've agreed with things said by moe and with things said by one wing. (actually, sometimes they seem to be saying the same thing.) some "people of faith" do what you describe. some don't. i've seen a lot of damage done by some of them, both from a distance and from up close and personal. even if that weren't the case, in no way do they have a corner on leading "good, strong, caring, hopeful lives" and "good thoughts and work ethic and love of family and life."
