the vocals on this new track are pretty great i think: http://morecowbell.net/2009/04/13/deertick...rn-on-flag-day/

no, i'd never use that as an excuse, nor do i feel like i need to defend my opinion on this record really. i was just stating what I said previously (re: being in the minority). also, that Guardian review claims Modern Times as a far superior record to this... which while i loved MT too, i think most folks won't agree with it being better than 'Together'
-
i've seen a few Keys shows that beat it in energy for sure, but in pure musicianship it was def better.
-
i def agree about the variety, but other than 3 songs it doesn't quite have as great of hooks, which is a big part of what i love so much about the Keys. that said, his solo live show w/ Hacienda backing him was better than any of the half dozen plus Keys shows i've seen.
-
some of the stuff on this record isn't far off that... (This Dream of You is prolly the best example w/ the accordion + fiddle interplay) regardless, it's def not zydeco, nor am i claiming it to be, just that it reminds me of it more than it does any straight up 12 bar blues (only elements i hear of that really are the basslines on a few songs, Jolene, etc.) friend of mine called it some great "swamp music", maybe that's a bit more accurate and all encompassing.
-
did i say it was a reason to like it? nice try tho
-
i've been playing guitar for nearly 20 years now, but thanks but again, i never called it straight up zydeco either, just that it has plenty of elements of it and would argue it's closer to that than straight up 12 bar blues. and i'd argue you can dance to plenty of the songs on here, waltzes and faster numbers. anywho, regardless, this seems to be getting fairly great reviews from friends & critics alike.
-
it's not as uptempo as most Zydeco (but then again there's plenty of Zydeco waltzes too). yeah a lot of this album is a hybrid of diff styles, but i'd argue it's closer to Zydeco than straight up Blues. sure it's the prominent use of the accordion that made me think zydeco, but there's a few other elements of it too. but it's def not 12 bar blues really either.
-
they are not 12 bar blues, i'm sorry. do you play guitar? Modern Times was more 12 bar blues than this is. the closest song on here to 12 bar blues is 'It's All Good', and even that isn't exactly it. the only thing very blues-y at times is the lead guitar work. the time signatures are actually a bit more complex than they seem on the surface (Life Is Hard ans Shake Shake Mama for example) not saying there's not blues elements, but to write it off as a bad blues record doesn't fit the smell test IMO.
-
it's not even really that blues-y of a record imo. much more zydeco really. no offense, but you're going to be in the minority on this one
-
really excited to hear their new one
-
UGH. i seriously give up... sorry guys, until IPB gets their shit together, it's either I disable PM altogether or we deal w/ the occasional spam msg. edit: I banned the entire subnet all of those spammers were coming from... might limit some legit German users form registering, but for now we can deal
-
yeah i'd agree with that... nothing mindblowing, but a very VERY solid record through and through
-
Shake Shake Baby is so good.
-
i agree with you... Murray Street is a great one to get into SY with... no it might not be their absolute best, but Daydream took me a bit to get into back in the day, whereas i've found a lot of folks whom i've gotten into SY via Murray St.
-
legit leak.
-
i did yesterday, it's a great record it's gone now tho
-
i don't know that i want a new Pixies record to be honest.
-
i don't know that DM are essentially top on the bill... Lolla has 6 headliners (2 each night) i'd argue that in many people's minds, TOOL is as big of get as RH or PJ
-
i'd like to see Depeche Mode for sure Killers are abysmal
-
i don't think the Pfork lineup is all that great (besides Fri night) either to be honest. there's maybe 2-4 acts I'd wanna see on Sat and Sun
-
not really... bands sign a clause that play Lolla can't play club shows within like a 100-ish mile radius of Chicago (i forget if Milwaukee is exempt or not?) like 2 months prior or after. most big festivals do this. the only club shows you'll see by Lolla bands are official Lolla sanctioned after parties, like Dr. Dog @ Schubas last year or Yeasayer & Broken Social Scene @ the Metro
-
i saw them 6x on the reunion tour, but this is pretty f'n lame. no thanks.
-
nah, Jameson is def a bit higher class and expensive than Jack. neither are exactly high end tho
-
yeah... def not a killer lineup this year by any means, but I might still go, we'll see. thinking ACL will be a sick lineup
