  1. I'm not talking about bands that are just great, there are many of those -- but bands who actually have had an INFLUENCE on the music that came after them. Like, bands who do make it in will say, "Oh yeah this band had a big influence on me and my music." I submit: YO LA TENGO Had as much of an influence on the sound of indie rock that came in its wake as any band ever has since Big Star (who I think may actually get recognition some day, or I would include them here) or Velvet Underground. And they've been making brilliant music for nearly 30 years now, with no sign of slowing down. Total
  2. What about Fairport Convention? Another one for me: Joni Mitchell
  3. I was tempted to say Radiohead, too. But I don't HATE them. I don't mind them, I just don't think they're as great as the rest of the world seems to.
  4. No guarantee that Billy will be there. In fact, I'm guessing that he probably won't. But, whatever… if you want to meet me (and, let's face it, who wouldn't?), swing by Madame Zuzu's in Highland Park on May 24th. I go on at 8. And it's free. Details: http://www.facebook.com/events/289573624533134/ Would love to meet some of you fine folks!
  5. And I listened to "The Boys Are Back In Town" so often that I ruined that one for myself, too. But I never really heard the entire Jailbreak album back then. Thankfully, becoming familiar with the entire record as an adult and hearing it in context has let me enjoy it all over again. So glad, because I fucking LOVE Thin Lizzy. Same thing with "Bohemian Rhapsody" and A Night At the Opera.
  6. She'll have to sell a lot more records to gain any sort of consideration for the Hall. The National, too.
  7. Just recommended to me by a friend who called it one of his favorites of 2013 Faux Fur http://fauxfurband.bandcamp.com/album/faux-fur RIYL: The Minutemen, Slovenly, Slint
  8. "Because I'm the right fit for this job. I have the skills you need and, from what I've seen, I think that I can slide right in to the role" Then, give 'em one of these: or not.
  9. I take careful measures not to listen to my favorite albums too often, to avoid things like burnout from happening. I want to be able to enjoy my favorite albums forever. Of course, there is the odd album that I will just, plain fall out of love with -- Ozzy Osbourne - Bark At the Moon being a perfect example. But that was 30 years ago. Big difference between tastes at age 13 and 43. (I do still love listening to the occasional tune from that record, though.)
  10. Seems like a thing we might all be interested in. Someplace to post links to bands that we find on what might be the most-interesting site on the net for musical diggers like us. Post the link to the album/band, and a RIYL, minimum. An album cover image might be nice, too. Like this: http://baron.bandcamp.com FREE album DL. RIYL: Radiohead, Eno, Joy Division And maybe we could pin this one as a handy reference for folks who are looking for new stuff to check out?
  11. Los Lobos is right up there with XTC and Jellyfish as one of the most-underrated bands of all time. (Or, at least under-recognized.) Hidalgo is maybe the biggest stud this side of Prince, musically speaking.
  12. Yup. And, for all the talk of Kane's amazing goal the other day, I think that Crawford's save, yesterday, where he batted the puck out of the air with his stick and tipped it onto the top of the net… THAT was the best play that I've seen all playoffs. Just awesome concentration. http://ca.sports.yahoo.com/video/crawford-bats-puck-onto-top-224037631.html
  13. Oh, wait... So, did this actually come through? http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-2093793/The-original-Happy-Mondays-line-reform-time-19-years.html I swear that I did no research about this before my post and had heard nothing one way or the other. So, did it?
