  1. Uncle Tupelo (opening for fIREHOSE) -- Halloween 1989. The show that changed my life. The Pogues (opening for Violent Femmes) Mojo Nixon & Skid Roeper (also opening for Violent Femmes at the same show) Pulp (opening for Blur) Drivin' n' Cryin' (opening for Living Colour) Ricky Skaggs (on the bill at The Grand Ole Opry) Dan Penn & Spooner Oldham (opening for Nick Lowe) -- a total shocker that I went to see one of my all-time favorites and realized that an American treasure was the opening act. And I had no idea who he was until he started singing all these classic songs that he had writ
  2. In a damn good year, this one might just be the best of the bunch. Songs from some of the best around—Robyn Hitchcock, Andrew Bird, Catherin Irwin, Stephen Merritt, M. Ward... And a band that includes some genuine heavyweights, including Booker T. Jones on keys. Seriously flippin' great. (I thought that I posted about this already, but couldn't find the thread. So, sorry if this is a repeat.)
  3. They both play rhythm and lead at any given time. And I totally agree. The title track from "Marquee Moon" blows my mind with the guitar interplay on there.
  4. Listening to this one on headphones now and... holy shit!
  5. In order: Keith Richards Pete Townshend Joe Strummer Steve Cropper BUT... unconventionally: Jimi Hendrix He played rhythm and lead simultaneously, remember. "Crosstown Traffic" and "Little Wing" are perfect examples.
  6. Ask 5 different people about the Go-Betweens, get 7 different answers. I think that's a good sign! For me today:
  7. Obviously, I have to limit myself to the Jeff songs. So, that said: Gun Acuff-Rose Watch Me Fall
  8. Bjorn: No need for the perspective. I have it and was just being overdramatic on a message board. I get it though, you expected to see something truly, genuinely horrifying and you just saw something trivial. Again, it's a message board. Sorry if I offended you with my hyperbole.
  9. Freedy Johnston is pretty good, too.
  10. "MKE" = Milwaukee? I don't know that I've seen that before. You MIGHT be able to find a 1-br. place for $1000-$1200 in Rogers Park. Or maybe in West Ravenswood (west of Western Ave.) if you look hard enough. Both neighborhoods are close to El stops, which are excellent for getting downtown every day. Although it has been 13 years since I've lived in the City, so...
  11. Pretty good, pretty funny summation of the neighborhoods in Chicago. Chicago people, you'll get it http://slightlyinsultingchicagoposters.tumblr.com/
  12. Zuzu's petals turn into giant flower monsters and Clarence comes back down to Earth with Michael the Archangel to do battle with the unholy creatures.
  13. Just what the world WASN'T waiting for: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YHJNBZ2rrMM Even the TRAILER is unfunny. This is going to be a trainwreck.
  14. I need to delve into these guys a bit more, but I am not usually a "Greatest Hits" kind of guy. Is there one album that you would recommend as a good starting point?
