  1. In some senses you are totally correct. Corporate America is not bad as a whole (I work for a large corporation and am happy to do so). It is an important part of our economy, of course. But, to a point, corporate oversight needs to tighten up. Too big to fail = too big to deregulate. But it takes money to make money. With the widening gap and the increasing cost of a college education, the kids growing up today -- MY kids -- have no chance, unless some of the money that is being doled out to these thieves is diverted to a place that will help those with the most potential to achieve that
  2. You heard much Sonu Nigam? From what I understand, he's kind of a more-contemporary male counterpart to Asha Bhosle. An Indian friend of mine made me a compilation of a bunch of his stuff. I've gotta dig that up and give it another listen, it's been a while. I remember liking it quite a bit.
  3. So, I finished A Christmas Carol. And I have to comment that the final chapter, where Scrooge is redeemed, is one of the most heart-lifting, joyous things that I have ever read. Yes, seeing it on film so many times, it always came off as cheezy and stilted. But, reading the original text, where you can actually get inside Scrooge's head as he runs about, wishing everyone Merry Christmas, and making amends... it adds a whole new dimension to that hyper-sentimentality, a human component that is maybe just too hard to, nay, impossible to express without the actual text. A really, surprisingly won
  4. Early show. 7:30 p.m. at The Horseshoe -- 4115 N. Lincoln Ave. in Chicago It's a short set, too -- probably only 4-5 songs. Hope some of y'all can make it. It should be fun. That is all.
  5. Love the Chamber Strings. There were rumors of their return but, sadly, nothing seems to have come of it yet.
  6. I thought of that too. But then, I decided that they rock more for giving me the tickets. And, the Nigel Tufnel thing... also thought of that. Maybe Ray will pay tribute (but I somehow doubt it).
  7. Tonight my parents were at a benefit dinner for a friend's foundation and they won a pair of tickets to see Ray Davies at the Chicago Theatre on 11/11. They just called to tell me this and to ask me if I wanted the tickets. :banana :banana :banana :banana :rock :rock :rock :rock Did I mention that my parents rock?
  8. Just picked this up from the local library: Moreno Veloso - Music Typewriter Will report back soon.
  9. Stevie Ray Vaughn did, too. And he was freaking amazing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=esHVE53zSms
  10. There's a YouTube of Samuel Jackson reading this, too. But I think that I like the Herzog version better; a bit more understated and creepy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4sHk75RqEmE
  11. And, I just posted a thread about these guys: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yw7Wd3pFP9s&feature=related
  12. My rankings (today): All Things Must Pass/Band on the Run Imagine Plastic Ono Band Double Fantasy McCartney Brainwashed might have been on there, if not for Lynne's heavy hand.
  13. Yeah, this is one of those albums that I liked from the get-go, but has grown on me more and more over time. A really great one. Hopefully, while she's here in the US, I'll get to see her! (Yeah, right.) Thanks for the heads-up on the new record.
  14. A friend of mine sent it to me many moons ago. Another friend of mine just shared it on Facebook, so I thought that I might share it here with y'all. It is pretty amazing. Too many favorites on here to make it worthwhile to list them all.
  15. Have you ever listened to anything from Band on the Run, other than the title cut? Seriously... I find it hard to believe that you could make that statement without having listened to it. Of course, to each their own and all, but you could be missing out on something pretty amazing. (And, on the album he does not do that cheezy vocal ad libbing like he does at the beginning of the song.)
