  1. Just criusing the thread and came across this one again. This song was such a guilty pleasure for me. Guilty, at the time, because I was a teenage metalhead and I could not help but love this song. I hid my shame beneath Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and Quiet Riot black concert Tees. But I still privately rocked out whenever ABC came on.
  2. Not even close to my first time. In fact, I'm here at this forum because I met Louie and Wendy at a Steve Earle concert that we all won tickets to. It was there that they told me about this forum. So blame them. And WXRT.
  3. Just picked this up today, based upon the fact that it looked like a cool, old Spanish-language psych thing. I was right. Haven't given it a listen yet, but I am planning on doing so when I get in to work tomorrow. Any of y'all heard of these guys? Heard the record? GtrPlyr: I'm looking at you!
  4. This. Although, I think that I like Out of Time more than you. ("Texarkana" is one of my favorite songs of theirs.)

  6. That Gretsch is really pretty. And I love the way they sound. Sadly, I have the same problem with Gretchs that I do with Rickenbackers and Les Pauls -- I've never played one that really FELT good to me. I mean, I can use them for this or that; borrow one from a friend who has one, or something. But, to OWN one? It needs to feel right, and none of those (that I have played) ever have.
  7. WXRT in Chicago. At 5:45 a.m. they have a little contest called "Instant Flashback", where they play a song and you have to guess the year it came out. Due to the time of day, it's usually pretty easy to get through. And, this time, the song was a pretty easy one -- "Girlfriend" by Matthew Sweet. 1991. But, it's usually more obscure.
  8. It's not that I don't like those albums, I just kinda moved on from the band at that point, and on to other bands who captured my attention more fully. Guided By Voices, Neutral Milk Hotel and the rest of the Elephant 6, Magnetic Fields -- those were the bands that defined the 90's for me, whereas R.E.M. just kinda got left behind after I left college in the early 90's. Things just kinda shifted. And it's odd that they split up the 2 discs exactly as I define the band in my mind. Not even IRS vs. major label, as the line could be drawn.
  9. That greatest hits package really leaves me kinda cold, as it leaves off a few of my favorites. 7 Chinese Brothers and Texarkana in particular. But yeah, just the singles. I get it. EDIT: Also, (still) on a personal relation to that collection -- I find it interesting that the 2 discs split at EXACTLY the point where I lost interest in following the band. Those are pretty much exactly the 2 eras into which I see the band's career being split.
  10. I did a search for an old thread about this (I thought that there was one), but nothing came up in my search. If I have repeated myself (as I have been known to do -- just as I have been known to use parens), please forgive me.
  11. Watch for Apple stock to take a bit of a dip today. And probably stay lower until they have another successful new product launch, post-Jobs. Just a guess.
  12. This guy needs some love from this board. And, it makes a lot of sense, seeing as how Wilco decided that he was worthy of quoting in one of their songs. He was brilliant, both as a guitar player and as a songwriter. Sadly, the only artifact that he left behind was a bunch a bedroom and live recordings that were, thankfully saved, cleaned up, and released. Well, that, and a couple of singles that he made with bands that he founded and then quit -- Pere Ubu, The Dead Boys, and Rocket From the Tombs. The reviewer is right, the solo bedroom cuts are the strongest, more than a little re
  13. I love your sig, Oil Can. I love all those lines, too. But here are some of my favorites: "The only time that I say 'no' is when they ask if I've had enough" -- Peter Laughner, "In the Bar" "The days go by too slowly, and the years go by too fast" -- Magnetic Fields, "When You're Old and Lonely" "Love is priceless, and I'm still paying the bill." --Daniel Johnston, "The Creature" "So just look at them and sigh and know they love you." --CSNY, "Teach Your Children"
  14. It's the 1969 Tele Thinline reissue. (NOT the 1972 reissues, those have humbuckers, and I really don't like the sound of the Fender humbuckers.) As far as the Dan Armstrong Lucite guitars -- no. Although, a while ago, I did post about a friend of mine who is building lucite guitars here in Chicago. So maybe that's where you got that idea?
  15. Looks like Mo Tucker. But, this snippet from the AllMusic writeup intrigues me: He also produced 2 of Nilsson's best records. I think that I'm gonna have to check this out.
  16. I think he's one of those authors that people read because they feel that they "have to," and then they wind up enjoying the hell out of those books. I guess there's a reason that some things become Classics.
  17. I loved that record. It's been a while since I've heard it. (Used to have it on cassette, back when I was in college.) Wonder if it still holds up.
  18. I downloaded the free version to my Kindle, for my son to use as a book report. When he changed his mind about what book he wanted to do, I started to read it myself. Just for the hell of it. Enjoying this a lot more than I thought that I would.
