What's the place in Ocean Beach? Where Jewel got her start at open mic nights? I've been there, and it was kinda meh. But, since Jewel got her start there, I shoulda expected that.

Chicago: Best open mic in town is at FitzGerald's: TUESDAY NIGHTS (that's tonight). Seriously, some amazing talent there. Of course, there are quite a few hacks, as well. But the some of the regulars are pretty amazing. I used to go and I just might start again tonight.

Watching the Dems. debate over the weekend, I was surprised at how impressed I was with Bill Richardson. I really like Hillary, but think that the GOP hates her so much that she would never be able to build any sort of bi-partisan support for... anything, really. No matter how good the idea, and how great the plan. I like Obama. A lot. But I think that he'll need some good folks in the Oval Office with him, at least for the first little while, until he gets his feet wet and gets rolling. He can be a great president. Some day. There's just a BIG mess to clean up. And I just hope that he's r

As a live band, they are notoriously inconsistent. Personally, I've seen that in action. Only saw them twice, the first time was one of the greatest shows I've ever seen. They were amazing; engaging, energetic, fun. The second time was a self-indulgent, feedback-drenched mess. Boring as hell. Painful, even. That said, I would see them again in a heartbeat... just knowing what they're capable of. They're the Band Next Door, that just happens to be one of the best bands in the world: the Bob Newhart of indie rock.

He's kinda like Caetano Veloso is in Brazil.... but to the Israelis I saw a concert of his last night on PBS. It was not great, but there were some pretty cool songs. He also had a couple of guests -- Shawn Colvin and Jackson Browne, so that should tell you the kind of music it was. Still, the guitar played fingerstyle nylon-string guitar like a motherfucker. Somewhere between classical and flamenco style. The thing is, I remember going to see this guy with my Sunday School class, in the basement of a synogauge of a temple on the North Side of Chicago, about 23 years ago. That theat

No interest then. No interest now. -
Anyone catch it? I love that series! I think I've seen maybe 7 or 8 different episodes. Ahmet (the guy who ran Atlantic Records) was another really interesting one. So cool. But I do think that Bob Newhart is my favorite.

Went pretty well. Was a little uncomfortablw with the whole microphone thing, after so long. (I adjusted, though.) And, as far as I know, there were no VCers there. Nobody who let me know, at least.

Seriously, all I really know of his work are: Nilsson Schmilsson and Son Of Schmilsson, but judging by those two albums alone (and the critical responses to his other albums) why are we not talking about him in the same sentences as much bigger names? He had a couple of hits. Yeah, not as many as some other bands, but... there are a lot of other bands that had fewer. (Pixies, although in a different time.) He had a 4-octave range(!?!?!), wrote great melodies, and had an oddball sense of humor that crept in more than just occasionally. It's got to be that last bit that some find distasteful.
