  1. It's like listening to the Yankees on the radio.
  2. http://www2.wnct.com/news/2012/oct/29/7/coast-guard-rescue-underway-hatteras-ar-2734769/ Large, 50 year old, 3 mast sailing ship (twice featured in movies) sinks off the Outer Banks. The crew was rescued from their life boats by the Coast Guard. Apparently the slow-moving ship couldn't quite get around Sandy, took on water, and couldn't pump it out fast enough. Another victim in the Graveyard of the Atlantic...
  3. Pence is getting his ring, all right. Maybe he figures if he looks like Jayson Werth, he'll get paid like him. Miguel Cabrera, triple crown winner, probable MVP, strikes out looking to end the World Series. Life sure can be bittersweet.
  4. Yes, sir! As was the first pitch strike by a triple-amputee Marine, accompanied by Zito, Romo, and the Say Hey Kid! http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=25449819&topic_id=37991280&c_id=mlb
  5. It could. They've got valuable resources that people and companies in other states would love to exploit, and they wouldn't have to deal with the side-effects since they don't live there to deal with the mess. Conversely, some states or regions have valuable resources that would give them obscene leverage if states weren't equal. Texas with oil, the plains with food crops, the south with cash crops, California with its population. Without an equal voice format in national government, these places could force their will on other states with federal cooperation, or take their business and votes
  6. A person resides in a state and votes for president. The majority votes for that state's choice for President, then your state votes for that candidate. If you want to do a popular vote, small and sparsely populated states will not only be ignored as voters; they're needs will be overlooked in D.C. by Congress. In turn, you'd have D.C. helping out large and well-populated states at the other states' expense. Popular vote can be far more problematic than people realize.
  7. The idea at its origins is simple: To maintain a unity of states, all of the states have to have equal importance. Otherwise, states would have left the union, independently, in factions, or made alliance with other countries; all of which is still possible, but not probable, nor easy. Electoral college or popular vote is really irrelevant. There are targeted swing voters in both systems. Why disenfranchise entire states or regions in the process?
  8. He's 18 and not going through the Japanese professional leagues. Teams will be able to shape him into the MLB regiment from the beginning in the minors. Any prospect is a gamble. This kid is as valuable of a prospect as any American, Canadian or Latin pitcher. His heritage is irrelevant.
  9. Otani was a first round pick in Japan, therefore he cannot sign with any MLB team until April '13 at the earliest.
  10. The Panda is higher on the food chain than the Tigers.
  11. Glad It's Over in a Charlottesville Ruby Tuesday at dinner before going to see Springsteen.
  12. First time seeing Bruce. That wasn't a concert. That was revival!!!
  13. Springsteen, Charlottesville, Va.!
  14. Adam Lind was not included in the deal, but the Jays sent pitcher David Carpenter instead. http://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/nationals/japanese-high-school-pitcher-shohei-otani-opts-for-mlb-over-japan-professional-baseball/2012/10/21/a0a661c0-1ba1-11e2-8817-41b9a7aaabc7_story.html The hottest free agent this offseason just might be an 18 year old Japanese pitcher who throws around 100 mph.
  15. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20121020&content_id=39951780&vkey=news_mlb&c_id=mlb Red Sox have found their new manager. They are about to acquire John Farrell from Toronto. Rumored to be involved in the deal are the Jays' 1B Adam Lind and Sox SS Mike Aviles. Lind makes $3.8M more (plus a $2M buyout of options) than Aviles, so Boston taking on Lind's extra salary might be enough to satisfy Toronto.

  17. I think once a pitcher becomes established, he should be paid for what he can do in his 20's and not bank (long-term anyway) on anything past aged 33. Free agency should probably start after 4 full seasons, with arbitration being eliminated altogether.
  18. Dontrelle Willis. I saw Linecum pitch in Philly in July. Except for balking by falling down and forgetting how many outs there were, he pitched fine.
  19. I've only seen one professional production (for $50 in the Kimmel Center, Philadelphia), and wasn't all that impressed. I have, however, been to several plays on the campus of East Carolina University, and have been impressed with the production and performances of every one of them. Their production of Hello, Dolly may very well be the most entertaining event I've ever attended. I'm excited about their plans to build a modern theater downtown, just off campus. It will only makes the shows and our town that much better!
  20. Nobody from my school informed us of the explosion. It wasn't until I got on the bus when some older students told me the space shuttle exploded. (We had just moved to NC at this point, so none of the other students had gotten to see the shuttle personally; so I think I took to the event more naturally.) I couldn't get my head around what they were saying because I was thinking they were talking about the eruption of gases that happens with all take-offs. I think they sensed my confusion and they made it clear that it blew up in the air - after take-off - with the crew on it - and they were al
  21. How many babes have you pulled out of the crowd? I agree on Springsteen.
  22. http://www.mlbdailydish.com/2012/10/17/3517572/alex-rodriguez-trade-rumors-yankees-marlins Rumors are swirling about an A-Rod to the Marlins trade. Yeah, that should bring a team-oriented focus to Miami.
  23. Thanks for the pics, clears up my "conspiracy" theory. If the Republicans had a living Pres. worth parading around, they'd do it. Bill Clinton, despite his personal shortcomings, still has a good standing with the general American public. Using his popularity to campaign for Obama is Clinton doing for his party what his party did for him, which is securing the presidency. You're right, Sparks, things can be different and the same at once: Clinton's stature is being used by one party for self-promotion, and the Bush's are being hidden in a political bunker by the other party for self-promotio
