  1. I wouldn't be surprised to hear Republicans making the argument that executive experience is more relevant, and Democrats claiming that experience at a national level is what matters.
  2. Bump and reminder, if you haven't got the book yet, now would be a good time to pick it up and get reading!
  3. Sorry if I misunderstood. That just struck me as a little judge-y, for some reason.
  4. I live in a house with four wage-earning adults. We're buying solar panels for a number of reasons, "noble" being pretty far down on the list. Thanks for judging, though.
  5. What a fabulous idea! Yay, thanks, Alison! Lots and lots of pics, please!
  6. I have to keep coming back to look at this thread, because this picture is totally cracking me up. Hi, you.
  7. Sunday: Sunday Streets Monday: remembering the Reason for the Season
  8. Sorry Jen, this is completely off the topic, but: My sister's got solar panels, and even in her location in the foggiest neighborhood in San Francisco, she puts energy back into the grid. We're in the process of getting them now; in terms of money saved on electric bills vs. initial investment, it'll be quite some time before they "pay for themselves", but they're not really a bad deal. Also, a couple who live up the street from my mom have solar panels, and an electric car (they actually make a brief appearance in Who Killed the Electric Car?). I'd love to have that set-up, myself.
  9. Hey, when did this thread become a referendum on my moderating skills (or lack thereof)? Back to politics, people, please!
  10. A little more substantive than that would be nice, but I'll take it for now.
  11. If the next post (and several subsequent posts...) aren't substantive, I'm shutting this down.
  12. This is ludicrous. There are certain circumstances that led to those PMs, and don't act like you don't know what I'm talking about. I'm so sick of that routine. If anyone has a problem with a specific post, please report it. I don't agree that one person being an asshole gives anyone else the right to respond in kind, but I'm not going to dive in and try to fix every instance of assholery that I see on here. I don't have that kind of time. If people could just grow up, try to treat each other with respect, these threads don't have to be shitfights.
  13. I was trying to explain to my nephew last night that these used to be real working conventions, delegates getting together to seriously hash out the party's platform and nominate the candidates. He couldn't fathom it as anything beyond a televised extravaganza.
  14. Alison, those are really great ideas! My sister is planning to have a yard sale (we call them "garage sales" here; no front yards!) in the next month or so, all of that will be really helpful. I especially like the idea about grouping stuff, that makes so much sense. Thanks!
  15. I was just going to say... Despite the fact that this is historical non-fiction, let's try to keep "spoilers" to a minimum please, particularly since we're going to do this in two sections. Even for those of us who've read the book before, let's discuss the first half of the book first, and as much as possible, hold off of getting into "what happens next" until we're discussing the second half. For folks who don't live in Chicago, especially, some of the history will be information that we didn't have previously. Thanks!
  16. They obviously had more important things on their mind than keeping track of that little slip of paper! What a cool story. I've got no help for you at all, but congrats to the happy couple.

    I fear

I'm a little bit afraid of guitar solos.
  18. Yeah, there's definitely no rush on this. I just wanted to put some timeframe on it, rather than leaving it completely open-ended. We can check in again next week and see where everyone stands.
