The "I so don't care about the Olympics" thread
gogo replied to bjorn_skurj's topic in Tongue-Tied Lightning
Hell yeah, that's a medal! http://www.nbcolympics.com/boxing/standing...8300/index.html The way the boxing works, the two boxers in the semifinals who don't make it into the final bout each get a bronze. So that's a guaranteed medal for Paddy. -
I don't know how many of you have gone through this...

I'd never been outside of California until my mom and I took a trip all the way across the country to look at the college that I ended up attending. And then a year later, she and my younger sister flew back with me and stayed for a few days while I moved in. All three of us still have very sharp memories of the moment that the cab pulled away from the main building on campus, and they waved out of the back window like on the credits of Leave It to Beaver, while we all sobbed. I was an insanely shy kid, from a very close family, and I still don't know what made me think it was a good idea -

The Olympics are on too late. You guys, my kinda-almost-a-cousin Paddy Barnes (light-flyweight boxer for Ireland) made it through to the round of 8! He's one match away from a medal! -
We were talking about Nat last week, watching the Olympic opening ceremonies. Nat was at our place for the opening ceremonies of the 2006 Winter games, we watched them the night after the Tweedy solo shows at the Fillmore. We ate burritos, she told an almost-dirty joke to the kids and talked about midwifery with my mom and aunt, and we watched the ceremony. All kinds of good times.

I didn't realize that about the DirecTV thing. Weird. We don't have that, I'll have to find somewhere to watch in October.

Pack your long johns, folks. It's about 60, and very drippy here today. Either that, or just hope for a drastic change in the weather by this time next week. -

Bummer of a technicality on that one. Someone else had "#1 Record" as their #3 choice. Since these were two separate releases, I counted them as separate entries. If I'd counted them together, they would have hit at #64. -

I know this got the lovely Saint Genevieve in trouble once, but I'll admit that I don't really know much of the Replacements. Also, I've been thinking about how much I'd have liked to have had Natalie's contribution to this list. I loved pretty much everything she ever recommended to me. -

And even if you combined their votes, they still would come in 2 places behind The Replacements' Let It Be. -

But yours was one of my favorite lists. I'm definitely doing that, too, going through and finding people who like a lot of the same stuff I like, and then picking up the ones on their lists that I don't have. -

OK, here we go! The scoring system is in the first post in this thread, so anyone who's wondering how I came up with these rankings, go back and check that out. There are a lot of ties, so you'll see that several albums might have the same number, but then it'll jump to the next number. I was going to try to come up with some kind of tie-breaking scheme, but none of them seemed really fair, so they're all just listed as ties. Everyone who participated has been e-mailed a spreadsheet with the full results. No real surprise for #1 , I'd say the biggest surprise for me was that some artist -

Dude! I totally love the Olympics! Paddy Barnes is kind of a cousin of ours (), I'm going to be so excited watching for him in the opening ceremonies. -
That either is or isn't Tweedy's birthday. I forget.
-
Yeah, the Bicentennial was just like that, but without Lee Iacocca.
-
When I saw the thread title, I was thinking in the other direction. How about bands and artist that influenced Uncle Tupelo, and its descendants? I'd listen to that, too!
-
Well, I am old enough to remember the Bicentennial, and I'm pretty sure that I had some flag-festooned clothing at that time. In fact, my older sisters tell the story that they were once standing on our street wearing vaguely-flag-themed shirts (again, 1976ish), and some teenagers drove past and yelled out the car window at them "All-American Assholes!"
-
I'm just not a big fan of the color scheme.
-
No, I had no reason to edit your post. I probably phrased that wrong. I was never even considering it. I don't know if we're talking about the same thing. I understand your point about the chain e-mails, etc. My point is more specific to the flag itself. It's just treated differently than it was 40 or 50 years ago, often by people who would claim that they respect it every bit as much as their fathers and grandfathers did. But some of them are making that claim while wearing American flag fanny-packs, which would probably have horrified their fathers and grandfathers (for more than jus

I just don't understand where it tipped. At one point, this was the height of disrespect: Now, you wouldn't be surprised to see something like this at either of the parties' conventions:
-
Hey, I'm in the flower of my youth! Or, middle age. Or something. Whatever, I'm not old enough to remember it!!! My dad talks about it all the time, though.
