  1. greatest hits? no thanks. (wait a minute, has Wilco ever had a hit? ok, ok "Best of") Rarities? maybe, depends how rare. There are the rarities we've all heard, but undoubtedly there are rarities that we never have. A never-before heard song or two from the Jay-era? yeah, that would be worth the price of admission. Didn't they record 50 songs for The Whole love? prbably some good ones in there. Not interested in listening to camel poop though.
  2. Well, if Louris really did break his promise, why would you expect Olson not to speak his mind when asked? Would you expect him to bite his tongue for the benefit of those who had stabbed him in the back? I'd say it is far shittier of Louris to do what he did. from an outsider's perspecticve, of course. Who knows what goes on behind closed doors.
  3. I was wondering about Olson's absence regarding the run up to the big shows. Too bad. The Olson-era Jayhawks are to the rest what Stars Wars is to Willow.
  4. Picked myself up one of these not too long ago: http://earthquakerdevices.com/shop/arpanoid/#!prettyPhoto It's the first really "wierd" pedal I've owned, and I've wanted somesort of arpegiating effect for a while. Unlike pretty much every other type of pedal I've played on ( OD, fuzz, phase, trem, delay) this requires you to actually alter the way you play, so you're in time/harmony with the arp-action. So there's been a learning curve. Unfortunately there's no sync/tap tempo, and no presets, which means that it will probably be more for studio use than live. (Not that you'd want it o
  5. Ok, I'll play devil's advocate here. For me, it's not so much cheating as it is uninspiring, dry, clinical. It becomes more of a paint-by-numbers excercise that leaves less room for the things that give music (or any art form) its worth: the element of humanity. Yes, bring on the fuck ups I say. I will like you more for trying and failing than copping out from the get go. Sure, it's probably different when you're playing in a cover band and you're expected to deliver the goods juke-box style, so in your particular case, I can't blame you. Just don't bury your head in it. Or get google
  6. Statistically speaking, you are more likely to be bitten by a Uruguayan soccer star than a shark.
  7. So now, in typical fashion, that we're splitting hairs and calling into question definitions which once seemed obvious, it seems like a good time to bring up the Gear Daddies. The Zamboni song wasn't a hit per se, but I believe it was in the MIghty Ducks or something like that, and game to be the song that "defined" the band. Which is a shame, because it's pretty much their worst song.
  8. I'm so sick of kielbasa i can't wait to sink my teeth into a brat or Italian sausage when I'm back.
  9. Do I see a gun control debate coming on? Someone go get Hixter...
  10. Am I reading into this or is John's tone when talking about Wilco/Tweedy a bit...distant?
  11. And I do so miss your virtual brawling with Speedracer. Aaahh, the good old days...
  12. You might be right, And (though it sucks that Sue is seriously ill) I maybe even hope you are
  13. Nothing lasts forever. And I could be wrong, it just seems that's one way to connect the dots to form a picture.
  14. I suspect it will be a barometer of whther they will continue to exist as a band. I also suspect it's a contractual agreement from before the hiatus. I also suspect the hiatus is a result of failed attempts at recording sessions (as multiple sources claimed there was work being done on a new Wilco record to be released in 2014) I also suspect that there may be a lineup change. i also suspect the lineup change may incorporate someone from TWEEDY.
  15. So my first "solo" record is being released next month under the moniker Judas Equus. It's a lo-fi, warts-and-all affair: mistakes were made (unintentionally) and left in (intentionally). I recorded on a 4-track, playing all the instruments myself (electric and accoustic guitars, various types of keys, lap steel, banjo, stylophone, kaossilator, field recordings) using various microphones ranging from half-way-decent studio mics to dictophone mics bought at the local flea-market. It's far from happy music. The up-beat feel good hit of the summer it is definitely not. But the cover is cool.
  16. So after a few listens, I have to say it's better than the single led me to believe it would be. In fact, it's fantastic, going into more personal, emotional territory than Light Up Gold but with the same lyrical aplomb. This was something I had wondered if they had in them, and yup, they got it in 'em. Of course the dust needs to settle some, but I think these guys have what takes to become one of the all-time greats. How many great records do you need to qualify for that anyway? Cause these guys have two, and what I've heard from their hard-to-find-debut is pretty freaking good too.
  17. New album streaming at NPR: http://www.npr.org/2014/05/25/314282136/first-listen-parquet-courts-sunbathing-animal
  18. I love lots of African music. Some has already been mentioned, but that won't stop me from mentioning again, in no particular order: Ali Farka Toure Orchestra Baobab Thomas Mapfumo Mansour Seck (plays or played with Baaba Maal) Toumani Diabate Oliver Mtukudzi Tinariwen S.E. Rogie Lucky Dube Hamid Kasri (I loves me some Gnawa) more will come to me. Once i saw youtube vid of an African kalimba player who came up with the fantastic idea of putting it thorugh a fuzz box. alas, I'm still trying to remember his name... And have fun, there's a whole continent of beauty to explore!
  19. because by doing a pre-order, people go start talking about it on the internet as we're doiing now, and interest is generated.
  20. poked around a bit on the internet yesterday about the guitarist. I think he's a Brit relocated to Chicago, plays with a band called the Zincs. They're on Thrill Jockey. Janet Bean (Freakwater) sings or plays on one of the records, so I personally consider that a good thing. That's all I turned up.
