  1. Sure I'm a Beatles fan. And if the Beatles were still an ongoing concern, putting out new music, I'd probably be all over it. But there is no new music. I've been listening to these same songs for almost 50 years. I've heard these songs so many times that I know every word, every note, every drumbeat, every nuance. I can hear the songs clearly in my head without even having to listen to them. As I said, enough already.
  2. I completely agree with your friend. Maybe it's just a function of age, but I have no interest in these new Beatles releases. I first bought the LP's, and then bought some (but not all) of the same music on CD. I'm done. I do love the Beatles, but those songs are so firmly entrenched in my brain that I never have to intentionally listen to them again. It's always nice to hear them on the radio, etc, but enough already.

    Big Star

If you recognize the man in my avatar, you'll know my opinion of Big Star. I'm very much looking forward to the box set that's coming out in a few weeks. I recently read the 33 and 1/3 book about Radio City, which was a fabulous and enlightening read. That is one of my all time favorite records. I never get tired of it.
  4. I'm listening to this too, and loving it. Most thoroughly listenable and enjoyable YLT album (for me) in probably 15 years. Fabulous.
  5. At first, I listened to W(TA) incessantly. iTunes tells me I've listened to it about 50 times. I was very impressed with it at first, initially thinking it was my second favorite Wilco album after Summerteeth. However, it doesn't seem to have had staying power with me. I find it difficult to remember individual songs. More likely, my initial euphoric reaction to it was because I think it's better than Sky Blue Sky, which I considered a disappointment. So, after some time now, I have to say it's a very good album, but not great.
  6. Maybe I'm the only one here who's heard this so far? (Yes, I'm a nut to have gone through the trouble to get this so soon.) After listening to this about 10 times now, a question and a couple of comments: Have John Stirratt or Pat Sansone ever sung on any Wilco recordings? I'm liking the sound of both of their voices on this album. Their songs are very nice. There's also a very cool percussion-only track with Glenn Kotche and Phil Selway. I said in my earlier post that the version of You Never Know on this album is identical to that on W(TA). That is not in fact the case. Someone e
  7. Oh my goodness, what a wonderful album! I have been known to listen to Ever Since You've Been Gone for hours on end. Definitely one of my all time favorite Nick Lowe songs.
  8. I found a download link to this on a blog the other day. I love all the Sparklehorse albums, but frankly this recording does absolutely nothing for me. Too much atmospheric meandering....and does not create an atmosphere I can tolerate. It's mostly unlistenable noise to me. Too bad. I look forward to whatever Mark Linkous does next, but this one is totally not for me.
  9. The Sun Came Out is available to purchase now as a download from play.com. It's missing the two KT Tunstall-related songs, which for some reason aren't available until next week. If you're not in Europe, you can circumvent the European-only download by entering your complete address, and just keeping the country to "UK". My credit card was initially declined for the incorrect country in the address (I'm in the US), but a call to my credit card company sorted it out and they put it through. It sounds good. They seem to have captured the feeling of the live performance, for anyone who has
  10. Okay, I think I worded my post somewhat incorrectly and you got the wrong impression. Yes, for sure I approach new music by artists I am already of a fan of by wanting to like it...and I definitely give it much more of a chance than someone I've never heard (or heard of) before. But if it is an artist that is totally new to me? Even if there is hype, I swear to god I don't go into it wanting to like it. I really don't have any expectations whatsoever, I just want to hear it. Actually, some of my best discoveries have come from hearing something new without the hype, by stumbling upon it
  11. Joe Pernice just released a new album a few weeks ago. The problem with The Pernice Brothers (IMHO) is that Joe Pernice has been making the same album over and over for 10 years now. I loved Overcome By Happiness - it was like a breath of fresh air and totally different. But every Pernice album sounds exactly the same. It's hard to maintain excitement over someone who keeps doing the same thing over and over. I agree with you that it takes many years to see who will stand the test of time and who will be influential on new artists. I haven't heard St Vincent, but I do know Bon Iver'
  12. I thought that's what you meant by this: Sorry if I mis-/over-interpreted.
  13. I surf the net and read about bands and I feel this does better my life. I'm 48 years old and I feel like I've grown up (i.e. am responsible and self-sufficient), but not old because of my passion for music. My friends and relatives talk about "grown up stuff" and it bores me to tears. I'm still obsessed with music, and it is the one great passion of my life. The thing I can always to turn to. It's never been my job, but it has always been my passion. It makes me sad to read that you actively want to give a passion like that up.
  14. *waves to Jaffaman* I'm very much looking forward to listening to your interviews. Thanks for posting all the details!
  15. In response to Rider's first post in this thread, there have been several times in my life when I've thought that listening to music was 'over' for me, at least to the extent that new music would give me the thrill I was looking for. But this has always turned out to be a temporary thing, and something always comes along that knocks my socks off just as much as anything ever did. Sometimes it has been a whole year that I've felt 'over' music. It always comes back. Don't try to force it. And I agree that trying to consume vast amounts of music in a short amount of time can lead to mus

    Watt & Nels

I tend to hate the Summerstage venue even under the best of conditions, so I'm glad I didn't go. I really like M. Ward, and was interested in Floored By Four, but to a lesser extent. I was thinking to go and just hang out outside the venue itself and listen...I can never, ever see the stage in that venue. Ever. It just gets so packed, and I'm only 5'3", and it's hopeless for me to see anything there. The sound problem with M. Ward seems to have made it a good decision not to go just to hang out outside and not be able to hear anything. Glad I skipped it....sounds like everything I hate a
  17. The song that most intrigues me, and simultaneously most baffles me is Home. WTF?? It's like Loretta Lynn and Conway Twitty crossed with The Bridge on the River Kwai crossed with New Order. *laughs* I've never heard anything quite like it. I love it.
  18. There is now a London gig associated with this project, which includes two Wilco members as participants: From Myspace: 7 Worlds Collide comes to London for special one-off gig Neil Finn is bringing the 7 Worlds Collide project to London for a very special one off show at Dingwalls in Camden. The exclusive and intimate show will take place on August 11th, and will feature Neil Finn, Ed O'Brien and Phil Selway of Radiohead and Glenn Kotche and John Stirratt of Wilco. Together they will be premiering tracks from the forthcoming album The Sun Came Out. Tickets go on sale Monday 3rd
  19. Yeah, they're playing here next week, but it's sold out. Rats. Too bad I only discovered this band a couple of days ago. I would have loved to go to this show. I keep seeing the name Devendra Banhart in descriptions of this band. I have heard of Devendra Banhart, but have never heard any of his music. Somehow I was under the impression that Devendra Banhart was a lot more "out there" (for lack of a better term) than Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros. Glad to know that some of you have heard of them and like them!
  20. I'm taking a big plunge as a newbie by starting a new topic. Has anyone here heard of this band? I stumbled upon them a few days ago and have become addicted to their Up From Below album. If it's any help, when I searched for the album on amazon, it said that people who bought this also bought W(TA). I am completely addicted to this...but have spent the past 2 days trying to categorize it. I can't. There is no Edward Sharpe. The lead singer's name is Alex something or other, and there is even one song on here where one of the other (female) band members refers to him as Alexander
  21. There is currently a live Feelies recording at Dime a Dozen from their performance at the Whitney Museum in NYC last month. I encourage anyone who's at all into the Feelies to check this recording out. It may be the best Feelies recording I've ever heard.
  22. I am new also - this is only my second post! But I've been a lurker for a long time and also feel the personality of the board has changed somewhat since I first started reading it. I am a big Wilco fan....but not a huge Wilco fan. What originally drew me to this board (aside from Wilco ) was the "Someone Else's Song" board....which does seem to have decreased traffic/not the same kind of conversation. I dunno....is it okay if I like to talk about other music more than I like to talk about Wilco? (Not wanting to step on any toes!) For what it's worth, I first listened to W(TA) w
  23. Hi - Long time lurker, first time poster here.... Someone is in the process of uploading that NZ TV program to youtube. This is what's up so far: Part 1 of 5: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=morsKuvb0S8 Part 2 of 5: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s5m2pCnv5h0
