My initial opinion is that the songs all sound a bit samey. I guess I was expecting Fakebook II, and this is clearly not that.

I received my CD yesterday. Not crazy about the packaging, but WOW does this sound much better than the free download.

I agree that it doesn't sound like anything else they've done and that it was ballsy to head in that direction, but I still hate it. *laughs* And trust me, I gave it more chances than I've probably given any other album, ever. Having listened to this album many, many times now, I still cannot tell where Cold Slope ends and King of You begins. It sounds like one continuous song to me. I don't hear any musical difference between the two at all that signals me we've moved on to a different song.

I wasn't disappointed at all, even though I do agree with you that the band was much more energized during the classics, which were sublime. I wasn't disappointed because it was the first time they'd performed those songs! Give them a chance, they'll grow into them! . I wasn't disappointed at all because my head is still spinning over the fact that we all got to hear a ton of great new music all at the same time, so there were no "spoilers" and no built-up expectations based on reading others' opinions and reviews. I've been struggling with this for a few years now. I say "struggling" because music has been the great passion of my life since I was younger than 10 years old and I find it incredible that I just don't listen to music as much I used to. I still buy new music, but where in the past I would dive into it and immerse myself in it, I now find that I listen a few times and then forget about it. That was the first time I've seen him, and frankly, I knew next to nothing about his music before last night, aside from his fantastic reputation. I came to know of him, oddly enough, from his dramatic roles in The Wire and in Treme. One of his songs was used over the closing credits of one of the Treme episodes and I have never forgotten it. I was very surprised to find that I recognized two more of his songs last night -- I Ain't Ever Satisfied and Copperhead Road -- although I don't know how I know these songs. I've seen Slacker, Dazed and Confused, the Before Sunrise/Sunset/Midnight trilogy, and then yesterday I finallly saw Boyhood. Honestly? I kept asking myself "is this it??". I liked it okay, and the fact that the same actors were used over a 12-year period is cool, but I honestly don't understand why this is nominated for best picture. I find any of the "Before...." trilogy much more compelling.

I have a lot of VHS tapes, and I have a player, but sadly, I no longer have a TV that will accept the signal from my old VHS player. I bought an adapter, but the picture displayed on the TV is awful. One of these days I'll probably just dump all the tapes. What a shame, there's lots of good stuff that is impossible to replace.
