  1. in my post I questioned the diversity of viewpoints that seem to be lacking coming out of Israel. But I am open to the possibility that the Western media fails to represent non mainstream view points that exist in Israel. I feel like I am being misquoted and my words twisted when you imply that I think it is a homogenous society.
  2. Unique though for drafting men and women - all it's citizens.
  3. Maybe this has no bearing on how different the Israeli government is from the American one, or their attitudes on war, but Israel is the only country in the world that has a mandatory military draft on all its citizens.
  4. There are movements calling for boycotts of the US too, from the UK and Canada- you can google it. However, I find this comparison flawed because while there are powerful voices of dissention (ie hotly debated in major media outlets) in the US about the actions of the US government, there doesn't seem to be much from within Israel about the blockade in Gaza or their treatment of the Palestinians in the West Bank. Israel might be a democracy but I am not sure how diverse or free their media is. In fact, it can be difficult even in the US to be vocally critical of Zionism without being bla
  5. Ok. I can't help it. I want to add my pseudo-scientific tuppence to this discussion. Music/dance has been a part of human mating rituals, cross-culturally, ever since there was music. There must be some physiological basis for this. If your and your partner move to the same groove, maybe that points to some biological compatibility for producing viable and competitive offspring. This is my theory. Albeit unproven, it has nonetheless compelled my hubs to enjoy Wilco. If he is faking it, he's doing a great job, and I will not look a gift horse in the mouth. Though, since this is
  6. Not sure if Passenger Side counts. Technically, it's a driving song rather than a song about a car. That WOULD be a fun one! It sorta reminds me of the legendary VC thread: "Rank the Wilco Albums (in Chronological Order)". Still being discussed, three years hence...
  7. And -- Elton John just sang at Rush Limbaugh's wedding (his fourth marriage). http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20391620,00.html
  8. Lol. Um, I was speaking from memory and imagination.
  9. Pixies call off Israel concert after Gaza raid (AP) JERUSALEM — The U.S. rock band Pixies has canceled a concert in Tel Aviv this week in the wake of Israel's deadly raid on a Gaza-bound aid flotilla. The group's Tel Aviv promoter, Shuki Weiss, relayed a statement from the band announcing the cancellation "with great regret." The band did not specify why it was pulling out of the gig, but organizers say the decision was related to last week's naval raid, which killed nine pro-Palestinian activists. Various artists have recently come under heavy pressure from activists to boycott Israel
  10. I think your friend was invited by the First Lady, who has been conferring with top chefs from around the nation, to help schools serve up better food for kids, to fight obesity. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100604/ap_on_he_me/us_white_house_top_chefs I think it is okay for a citizen from a democratic country to publically criticize their own leader, past or present, when they are a guest of that government; but it is very rude and undiplomatic to be criticizing someone else's government when you are an invited guest of that government. Equally it would be rude for an American celebr

  12. (From his book All-American Poem, 2008) V The skinny girl walking arm-in-arm with her little sister is wearing a shirt that says TALK NERDY TO ME and I want to, I want to put my bag of groceries down beside the fire hydrant and whisper something in her ear about long division. I want to stand behind her and run a single finger down her spine while she tells me about all her correlatives. Maybe she'll moan a little when I tell her that x equals negative-b plus or minus the square root of b-squared minus 4( a )( c ) all over 2a. I have my hopes. I could show her my comic books and Play Stati

  14. Laurie Anderson performs Opera House dog concert http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100605/ap_on_en_mu/as_australia_music_for_dogs By KRISTEN GELINEAU, Associated Press Writer SYDNEY – Some in the audience howled with glee, others stood on trembling legs and a few drooled in delight as famed performance artist Laurie Anderson debuted her original "Music for Dogs" composition outside the Sydney Opera House on Saturday. Hundreds of dogs and their owners bounced around as Anderson entertained them with 20 minutes of thumping beats, whale calls, whistles and a few high-pitched electronic sounds
  15. The tacky puns are starting to remind me of being in 7th grade. It seemed like fun at the time, but I was 13.
  16. Maybe this ought to be posted to this Misheard Lyrics thread. Lol.
  17. Whoa! Y'all need to slow down. The best wilco song for lovemaking has to be "more like the moon" -- works best for the middle of the night. I would recommend "company in my back" for a lazy weekend morning; and "wishful thinking" is helpful on a warm sunny afternoon with the windows open.
  18. In Misunderstood, I used to think it was "reflecting on your O.C.D." because that totally made sense to me at the time... Returning to your hometown and lighting up a cigarette while thinking about being obsessive-compulsive.
  19. The Stockholm show was billed thus, but was not in the three hour format. I think it may have been only for the US shows. :-(
  20. In case anyone is keeping track, there was no ash cloud and we made it from Dublin to lovely Stockholm just fine. It rained on the day of the show but the rest of the weekend was beautiful. I don't do setlists so hope someone else will post that to After the Show. There was very little banter, Jeff said because they were short on time. My friend and I both thought the guys seemed a little quiet compared to the last time I saw them in Dublin, though it was still a great show. Afterward they signed autographs for us and photos. So happy! Love Wilco!
  21. OMG! Great setlist! Were there many people there? I am curious about their Finnish following. So excited for Sunday. Thanks mrk. Hope you will post info about this show and tomorrow's show to the "After the Show" forum because this is IMPORTANT information and will be lost in this thread.
  22. P.S. I requested "Ashes" for the show, just to be ironic, or is it paradoxical? I've been confused about irony and paradox ever since that darn Alanis Morissette song.
