  1. That silenced the little voice. Thanks!
  2. I am OCD when it comes to fact checking. (It's beyond my control.) So, okay, when I go to the shows page http://www.wilcoworld.net/shows/index.php it says "Wilco currently have no shows scheduled" and lists only the New Orleans Jazz Fest and Solid Sound. Is it on a different page? Please post.
  3. Is this list along the lines of "Encouraged Random Speculation," or have these dates been announced/confirmed?
  4. And yet, the background image on the band's own Wilcoworld.net "info" page seems to say it's okay... http://www.wilcoworld.net/info/index.php
  5. I think when one formulates a theory based on a text, it is standard practice to find specifics in the original text that support it, and also to make it very clear where the text ends and where your analysis begins. How subtexts are perceived reveal as much (if not more) about the subjectivity of the reader as they do the intentions of the author. I'm conscious to make a note of this in my own analysis. In your critical writing (in this thread and in a previous one about the Pixies that I am too lazy this cold Dublin morning to find and link to), you have a way of subjectively paraph
  6. Imma bring my own microcosmic rainbow coalition to the next Wilco show in Ireland. Also, will try to get a natural-redhead friend to come. They are a true minority, representing only 2 percent of the human population. I recently watched a BBC documentary (F*** Off I'm Ginger) about the discrimination and stereotyping redheads endure. Technically, people with Asiatic genes are a global majority. Together, the populations of India and China make up 40 percent of the world's population. For comparison, Africans represent about 10 percent of the world's population. So, depending on w
  7. Sometimes Jason Bateman sort of has "Kotche-esque" moments.
  8. True. There's been much better hair in rock and roll. His isn't even the best hair in Wilco. But the heart wants what it wants.
  9. No! Say it isn't so. Jeff Tweedy's hair was THE main reason I got into Wilco. I didn't see this Letterman clip. Are we absolutely sure it wasn't just bad lighting?
  10. Perhaps then you are a bad reader and read into my post what you wanted to believe. I did not say Wilco fans SHOULD feel guilty, but that they have the stereotype of the kind that WOULD feel more "white guilt" than most, which is why that joke works.
  11. My general observation based on the same data (ie the number of posts on this thread) is that the one liner touched a nerve. But anyway. I am done.
  12. Hey. So was I an anthropology major! I hope you are not resorting to ad hominem attacks on my sense of humor. That in fact was what I meant about power and humor. In primates only alpha monkeys get to "laugh" and minor monkeys "smile" in appeasement. It's revealing who gets to decide what is "funny" in a community. This is getting rather hefty for a one line joke, though. Why do you provoke me?
  13. Wow, U2roolz, I don't know where you are getting all the angry vibes because they are not coming from me. I blame no one. My first post in this thread was unequivocally in defense of Wilco. And I am not irate. I find pop culture interesting. I was thinking about the Rick Sanchez thing last week (having worked at CBS News long ago), so when this 30 Rock line came up this week and created some buzz, I was trying to fit it into ideas that were starting to come together. It doesn't matter when it was written or taped -- fact is, it entered the public (that's me) consciousness at
  14. I don't watch the show regularly, but some anthropologists theorize that humor reveals power in a society. I am interested in issues of race, so enjoy deconstructing popular culture when issues of race come up, even in jest. And yet, the humor would not have worked as well with another band, I think. There is a definite stereotype about the kind of person who might listen to Wilco that makes this joke work. Inaccurate jokes tend to miss the target. She sang in the 2004 Republican National Convention. She wears her politics on her sleeve. Yes, I'm sure there are some pensive Wom
  15. While on the topic of political correctness, a gentle reminder that in issues of racial diversity, it is not always black and white -- there are other citizens of color in the U.S. I didn't see this episode of 30 Rock, and the line probably played well spoken, but I had to have a think about the flippant analogy (especially in light of the recent Rick Sanchez discussion about minorities in the media) comparing the struggles by people of color to be represented in mainstream media, to going to a alt-country-rock-Americana concert. And why Wilco? There are "whiter" audiences at Lee Ann Woma
  16. I'm not white but I like Wilco. I think sometimes my brothers and sisters of color need to branch out in the genres of music they listen to. I am sure there are more white fans who listen to 50 Cent than there are folks of color who listen to Wilco, and it isn't necessarily because 50 Cent writes "white friendly" songs. In the case of Wilco, it is definitely a case of aesthetic self-segregation at play.
  17. Did he dedicate Sunset to you? I thought right before he played it, JT said "It's all your fault, Paul." About the fan altercation, apparently, the fan told JT: "I bought every album you guys have ever made," by way of justification. Maybe they all wish they could have their cameras personally confiscated by El Tweedy, and then have him give a personal shout out to them at a later concert. ;-) I've heard Impossible Germany played live many, many times, but last night Nels's solo gave me a piloerection. It sounded haunting and wistful, for some reason. Maybe it was the acoustics.
  18. Great find, Wilco Me. You were right about the time suck, too. I left as they played Cali Stars so wanted to know what I missed. Thanks for finding the complete setlist.
  19. Richard, I just looked at the requests list for the Glasgow show and "Leave Me Like You Found Me" is now the number one requested song for that show. I am certain it will be played. Take care, and peace be with you.
  20. Field Music and Felice Brothers opened. (Felice Brothers = AMAZING!) Wilco was on stage around 10pm and played till way past midnight. Apologies, but I do not have a setlist. They opened with "Ashes" and it was the first time I've heard "Country Disappeared" played live -- lovely. Songs played included (neither complete nor in order): Impossible Germany Shot in the Arm Via Chicago Deeper Down I'll Fight Bull Black Nova Passenger Side Hummingbird California Stars The Late Greats I'm the Man Who Loves You I am Trying to Break your Heart Hate it Here Jesus etc. (sing-along). I didn
  21. I'm very sorry for your loss, Richard. I read about the rally and Alan's death in the Sunday Mail. It was a terrible tragedy. The form for requesting songs is at: http://www.wilcoworld.net/shows/request.php?s=683 I hope they will play the songs you need to hear. Music can help us grieve. When my step-dad died two years ago, I listened to Sky Blue Sky daily, repeated continuously, for several months. It was about all I could "feel" beyond the general numbness. He grew up in East Kilbride, near Glasgow. I've never been there. I plan to go to the show and had been thinking of him
  22. I take back my hyperbole about Irish fans being polite in a previous VC thread! http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5hByCwU319vO3k_Derzikwi663fFwD9HVVOF82 Axl Rose tries Dublin's patience, sends crowd home By SHAWN POGATCHNIK (AP) DUBLIN — Axl Rose, it seems, needs a little more patience - and a much louder alarm clock. The 48-year-old singer of U.S. hard-rock band Guns N' Roses irritated thousands of his Dublin fans at the 02 Arena on Wednesday night by showing up nearly an hour late - a recurring problem on his band's European tour - and then walking off after an unrul
  23. Mavis Staples and Billy Bragg in concert together, UCLA Royce Hall. November 5, 2010. http://eventful.com/losangeles/events/mavis-staples-and-billy-bragg-/E0-001-032329210-5
  24. Wish Wilconomics would come to my town...
  25. JD- as a non-white person with working class roots, I agree with you on the general race and class demographic of the fans who were able to attend. I agree with this observation in a non judgmental way though. I like Wilco for my own reasons but I find this fan subculture, and indeed the type of crowd who summer in the Berkshires, interesting the same way others might find my culture exotic. (I love that book "Stuff White People Like.") I have to say, while on the issue of race at the festival, that there were some (white) boys in their late teen standing near me about 10 rows back, cen
