  1. I hear you. Thanks for taking time to explain. I guess since Wilco has not come out to give a reason why, we can't know what they think, but what you've written makes perfect sense. I've never posted on youtube, but it seems the ones who do post videos (upper limit of 10 minutes), don't do it for financial gain. And could it have bearing on the earnings of musicians when I wouldn't pay money to look at it? It is different from filming in a movie theatre because you are actually copying someone else's work in the same medium, frame by frame, and potentially spoiling a narrative arc.
  2. I think you used an earlier list -- a lot of the countries that have been taken out are still on the list you posted.
  3. Wonder if she was prettier, like Nora Jones, whether this cover would be better received.
  4. Hmmm... I think a lot of people who make ethnographic films that attempt to document live performance in different cultures would argue this point. Really? People would watch these youtube posts instead of going to live shows? Every time I watch one of these badly filmed concert snippets, it only stokes my Live-Wilco craving. This year has been absolutely fanatical for me, going to six Wilco shows around Europe. Spending way too much of our recession money. I bet the same people who look these things up to watch them are the ones spend the most on concert tickets. The same way
  5. Been there. Done that. Albeit, on a guided tour of the Demilitarized Zone: http://affiliates.uso.org/Korea/default.cfm?contentid=347
  6. Having done some documentary work, I appreciated Ashes... more as a documentary than as a pure concert film. It would be missing the point to critique Ashes... based solely on the music and performances that were included. Though not on the same scale as Gimme Shelter (1970), Ashes does well contextualizing the music of Wilco within a "time." I mean this both on a historical and personal time-line: the images of dilapidated small-towns parallel the discussion on the physical toll of touring on individual band members. This overriding theme, of deterioration and the passage of time, was
  7. Took out Bahamas, China, Indonesia, South Korea, North Korea (about three feet across the 38th Parallel at Panmunjom; but that still counts, no?), Malaysia, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam. Afghanistan (316) Albania (97) Algeria (76) Andorra (94) Angola (53) Antartica Antigua and Barbuda (108) Armenia (218) Azerbaijan (127) Bahrain (142) Bangladesh (475) Belarus (212) Benin (23) Bhutan (94) Bolivia (227) Botswana (161) Brunei (233) Bulgaria (852) Burkina Faso (47) Burundi (36) Cambodia (348) Cameroon (67) Cape Verde (30) Central African Republic (24) Comoros (29) Congo (Brazzaville) (33) C
  8. Jazz band Bad Plus covers Wilco on their new album "For All I Care."
  9. Does anyone know why Jeff Tweedy gets so angry about people videoing and posting concert snippets online? Has he talked about this in any interviews? The stuff on youtube is usually bad quality, but it does document something. I'd never waste a moment of my own enjoyment by videoing during a Wilco show, but I sometimes find these amateur videos informative for what they are. Especially for shows I didn't get to go to, but hear about. As a student of anthropology, I think these mini-documentaries are equally about Wilco as they are auto-ethnographic films by Wilco's fans. I love the s
  10. Thanks. I was unaware of the earlier thread, and have just read through it. I liked some of NJ's earlier work, and was curious about her version, but she colors completely within the lines here. Everything about her plays too safe. I have to agree with many of the other responses that NJ's version is bland. And it's not that I am such a purist about Wilco's work. I'm imagining that if Beyonce covered "Jesus, etc." that might've been more interesting -- something completely unlike the original. Some of the fan covers on youtube are enjoyable, too. Maybe this is like a whistle that
  11. I know Nora Jones is Ravi Shankar's daughter, but her cover of "Jesus, etc." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pEfjk1W1yZM What just happened? Maybe Jeff Tweedy is tired of that song. Maybe that is why he made fans sing it at the last round of shows in Europe instead of singing it himself. This? Turns it completely gooey.
  12. I read somewhere that his mother's maiden name was Werkmeister.
  13. Yes. I understood that part. But thanks for reiterating.
  14. um. yeah... "capture and sharing" is not something I would know anything about, obviously. Maybe they will release another live CD? It's been a while since Kicking Television.
  15. Here it is for download at Owl and Bear: http://wilcoarchive.com/Wilco%202009-08-28%20Carsten%20Source/ Instructions here---> http://www.owlandbear.com/flacshndvd-faq/
  16. This show is on the Roadcase page of the Wilcoworld.net website: http://www.wilcoworld.net/roadcase/dublin-09-08-28.php
  17. Are you sure? I am a little OCD about fact checking , so went and cross-referenced futureage1's posts with Wilco's show schedule on wilcobase.com. Some of the dates overlap. The one that stands out the most is on April 15 when Wilco did the photo shoot for (the Album) in Milwaukee, followed by a show at Pabst that night -- futureage1 posted 15 times that day. I don't know whether the time listed is their local time or mine (I'm on Greenwich Mean), so can't say if the posts were during actual show times. It IS possible that Tweedy finds time to debate politics here in between h
  18. Solo shows and Pronto or Autumn Defense count, too. Also, shows where Wilco members join other bands to form a super-group like 7 Worlds Collide and the Mark Mulcahy Benefit, or festivals, etc. Feel free to list the venues...
  19. I just heard Wilco (the Song) on Premiere League Saturday (a soccer highlights show) on RTE 2 (Irish television station). Not "out and about" per se, but still stunned by it.
  20. Ur right. I should have posted it in the Someone Else's Song forum. My bad.
  21. I didn't know I was rehashing, having just signed up. But the old thread(s) were interesting to read -- so thanks for finding them.
  22. Video and flash photography are big no-nos, but what about when people around you at a concert dance a goofy dance; or sing along so, out of tune, with you? Some food for thought: Dance? Article in Chicago Tribune http://bit.ly/IT0AG Stand still? Entry in Stuff White People Like http://stuffwhitepeoplelike.com/2008/02/17/68-standing-still-at-concerts/
  23. I was to the left of the couple when this happened. Jeff said "No videos" and then later he said "You'll get it back."
