Where to start with The Grateful Dead?

5/5/77 isn't shabby either, if I recall. -
Curious about leak listening habits.

Times have changed and yet they haven't. This is really the same role that radio once played. (although, arguably not in my lifetime) I will say that, as somebody who is mostly interested in music that doesn't get played on the radio, I can't remember how I survived before the internet. There was an awful lot of hit-and-miss shopping back then. So having the try-before-you-buy thing available has definitely helped my shopping habits, although I will agree that I buy far fewer cds than I ever used to. Not sure if that trend is true for everybody. -
Indeed. Its the kind of album everybody gushes over and after a while I find myself rolling my eyes and thinking "yeah, yeah, whatever", and then at some point I'll listen to it again and go "Gee, you know, this record is pretty amazing..." Although, if we're going for iconic jazz records with the word blue in them, I still prefer Coltrane's "Blue Train".

Most of my downloading anymore consists of searching the internet for live recordings of bands that are no longer together. Such is the state of my music collection these days. I'd like to pretend there was some great ethical reason behind my decline in album-downloads, but really its mostly that I don't have much time to spend listening these days and 80% of the stuff I've dl'd in recent years turned out not to really move me, anyway. Oh well. -

I have nothing against listening early. If I like it, I'll buy it...if I don't, it is immediately banned for being a waste of disk space. Overall, I agree with the "thank goodness for leaks" mentality. It amazes me to think of how many cds I bought in my younger days purely on the basis of having a cool-sounding band name, song titles, or cover art. Yeah, I bought a lot of shit records back in the day. -
Much as I can't stand the guy or the thought that he now is the sole owner of the most prestigious record in the game, I kind of wish I had seen this. Oh well, such are the dangers of completely tuning out after the all star break. My team's season bit the dust so long ago I can't believe it isn't hockey season yet.

Always great to see these threads pop up from time to time. MMW is a big favorite of mine, although they are admittedly sometimes easier on the ears than others. Love the experimentation, but really don't find myself listening much to stuff like Electric Tonic (all improv) or even The Dropper very much. Friday Afternoon In the Universe was a revelation to me when I first heard it--might have been what started me down the path to jazz-appreciation. Maybe not. I dunno. Hard to go wrong with the classics mentioned: Coltrane/Monk/Miles/Mingus/Parker. I always liked the suggestion that th

I drove past a White Castle on my way to work this morning. Did not stop, but saw several people in line at the drive-thru. 8:00am. Hardcore.

I got a soft spot for old hippies so I was at the Bob Weir & Ratdog show in a driving rainstorm a few weeks ago. (that was also the first outside show I've been to at that venue--the 'reversible stage' is kind of a cool idea, actually) Its been a pretty slow summer around here, concert-wise, eh?

Yeah, Bo used to make me sad too on a lot of late-November Saturdays...

Put another check mark for me in the "I tried this and that a few times when I was younger" category, but mostly that was all a long time ago. With 3 young kids I can't really afford to be completely zonked out of my mind on anything--about the craziest you'll see me get anymore is about 2 beers. 3 if you catch me on a "wild" night. But regarding the discussion earlier about mental states and acid, yeah, I tripped a couple times as a kid and had an interesting experience with it. Probably would have done it more, but in college I began experiencing bouts of depression and anxiety and I f

so I've decided to tatoo "WILCO" on my forehead...

Interesting. I just moved back to town so never visited that place when there was a Damon's inside (not that I'm really even a Damon's fan, either, but it is definitely a step up), but yeah, I've started referring to that venue as "The WC" because of the White Castle inside.

Did you reach a new level while on lunch break?

I don't think I have ever been 5 hours early for anything in my life.

Fuck. Can somebody please send me a graph of which oil company is evilest this week? I can never keep track.

If UM can't beat OSU this year, they got some serious 'splainin to do. Which, of course, will make it even sweeter when they lose again!

The last movie I saw at the theatre was "Chicken Little."

This is the first time in many years that August has rolled around and I'm still not at all excited about college football season. Its probably a combination of the lingering bitter taste from the no-show OSU pulled in the championship game and the fact that they will likely have zero offense this year--which, in a Tressel system, actually amounts to negative offense.

Did they promise to keep up a good ratio?

I'm in full agreement with Europe 72 being a wonderful starting point. (As I think we've already covered in this thread at some point) I think it makes a great intro b/c it has the energy of being a live album, albeit with some studio polishing to make is go down smoothly to a newcomer's ears. Personally, I started out with the studio albums and I think my addiction took longer to develop that way. Started with the obligatory American Beauty and Workingman's Dead. Liked 'em a lot. Actually, In the Dark might have been my first exposure, come to think of it. Anyway, then I think I went t -
Wilco has sort of become my favorite band by default over the years. That doesn't sound like much of a compliment, but really it is. I don't know if Wilco has ever been the band that most excites me, but somehow they've remained in my top 5 bands for well over a decade now (while my overall music tastes have been all over the place) and I'm not sure I can say that about any other band. I go through cycles with Wilco where I don't listen to them at all for a while (I'm going through one of those periods now, actually), but inevitably I will come back at some point and be hooked all over agai

La Bamba as in "burritos as big as your head" La Bamba's? I had no idea they were a chain. La Bamba's burritos and Apollo's gyros were staples of my college drunkennes at Ohio State--which is to say I ate most of my meals there for like 15 years or however long it took me to graduate.

I'm a little amazed at the love-fest for WC here. In no way shape or form would I ever say that I love them. Eat them, sure...love them, no. Definitely drunk food. There is a concert venue here in Columbus that has a White Castle inside the venue. Tell me, do you really want to be constantly smelling sliders while trying to watch a show? (and, yes, I bought 4 of them during the set-break at a recent show, but that's only because I had a lot of beer too)
