  1. I would like to check out a Phil show for exactly this reason. RD was good, and "jammy" when they wanted to be, but also felt a little more "structured" than I guess I would expect a GD-family band to sound. Once a song began, there wasn't so much a feeling that the music could turn on a dime and take you someplace unexpected. Are Phil's shows more like that? (I assume a lot of has to do with whom is in his band at the time, I guess)
  2. Right. Its a different band, but I guess sometimes its difficult to hear it as such. I avoided the spinoffs for a long time because I guess I just figured "Meh, its not the same." Of course its not the same. It never will be. But you're right, there is something about hearing the music being played live. Really, it would be a shame if Bobby and Phil weren't out there still playing those songs. But you have to kind of accept the music for what it is. You're right, if you go into it making comparisons then you're probably not going to going to enjoy it.
  3. Well, Jerry is definitely still missed. This was my first experience with Ratdog--honestly, I had always heard they kind of suck. Well, "suck" is maybe not the right word, but a lot of what I heard was from people who saw them when you did--not long after Jerry passed, and I think back then it was awkward because the band is playing GD songs and there are spots you just expect to hear Jerry's voice or his guitar or whatever. And then its kind of a kick in the gut when it doesn't come. Time has probably healed a lot of that, I guess. Its still a little awkward, tho, to hear Bob sing songs
  4. Yeah, I'd definitely go check out a Phil show. After years of basically ignoring the spinoff bands I'm ready to admit that they can actually be a lot of fun. Looks like the more hardcore Ratdoggers are pretty mixed in their feelings about last night's show. I did feel that the first set dragged a bit after the weather turned foul, but I thought they recovered fine in the second half. Or maybe I just enjoyed it more because I was closer to the stage.
  5. My apologies in advance for filling yet another area of the forum with this Deadhead stuff. I was going to post this in the GD thread we've already got going, but figured it probably belongs here. So here we go... Bob Weir & Ratdog w/ Keller Williams Tuesday, July 17, 2007 LC Pavilion Columbus, OH Lets begin with the obligatory crappy cameraphone pic: This was my first time I'd bothered venturing out to see any of the post-Dead spinoff bands in person. I may not be the world's biggest Bobby fan (I think that award goes to the lady nearby last night who kept yelling "Bobbb
  6. I liked the old light bulb better. Maybe I'm just not looking at the new one right. I'll keep trying.
  7. Will do. BTW, I don't really have an issue w/ Bob doing Jerry tunes. In fact, its wonderful to see them in the setlist--it just takes a little getting used to.
  8. What fun is it to put songs on your wishlist that you actually think will get played? I've had a headache all day at work, but it is suddenly subsiding as quittin' time draws near.
  9. Yeah, its fun looking at the recent setlists and guessing what might make the mix. Seems like he's been adding a lot more Jerry songs into the mix lately.
  10. I'll revive this just to add to the dismay of those whom might have though this thread finally croaked. Counting down to showtime for BobDog tonight. Rain has held off thus far today, tho evening looks dicey. So be it. I haven't danced in the rain since I was a kid--might do me some good. Dear Bob, on the off chance you are spending the afternoon in my fair city by perusing a Wilco messageboard, here are some songs it would be cool to hear tonight: Estimated Prophet (been digging on this one recently) Black-Throated Wind (maybe a long shot, but I always liked this one) Corrina (b/c
  11. 6 people to create 6 new aliases each, and stage an elaborate argument in which all of them end up quitting the board simultaneously also I don't think we should be talking about this.
  12. I've never heard half of these songs...but, evidently, if you listen to one Green Day album its like listening to a copy of every song anybody else ever made. (not that I didn't know that)
  13. Radiohead albums typically take some time for me to warm up to them and digest, anyway, so I guess I'm not dying of anticipation here. At one point I think I heard some low-fi live recordings of some new songs and was pretty meh about it--but that could have just been due to the lousiness of the recordings. Who knows?
  14. I will agree with you on these specific songs. Particularly Handshake Drugs. And I prefer just about any recent live version of Airline to Heaven to the album version. Other songs I'm kind of meh on. I've not yet heard a live version of Jesus, Etc that I prefer to the album version. And A Shot in the Arm is one of those songs that on some nights I love it and other times I just don't care for it. The version on KT isn't one of my favorites, but I guess it is ok.
  15. Still waiting for him to reschedule the Columbus date that was announced/cancelled in like January.
  16. "Woodstock-esque". Nice. Yep, the venue nowadays is called Lifestyle Communities Pavilion (horrible name) or "The LC" as the kids call it. I've never been to an outdoor show there, but the indoor/outdoor venue is an interesting concept. The setup looks cool in the sense that you get the chill vibe of an outdoor show without anybody being a zillion miles from the stage like if you were on the lawn at a shed. The whole thing is GA for this show, which is cool: Rain or shine, I'm lookin' forward to this one.
  17. I'm currently doing my anti-rain dance, since the weather forecast for seeing Ratdog tomorrow night looks like a 50/50 chance of rain/thunderstorms. Kinda blows cuz I am suddenly finding myself all geeked up for this show and was hoping for a picturesque summer night. But I guess as long as there is no lightning a little rain doesn't matter. If you dance fast enough you can slip between raindrops...
  18. Mainstream country seems to have adopted a new patron saint in recent years. Seems like every country dude has traded in his neon-colored rodeo outfit (too Garth Brooks, I guess) for sandals and a straw hat and songs about tequila that come out sounding like watered-down Jimmy Buffett. That's right, I said watered-down Jimmy Buffett. Wrap your head around that for a second. (full disclosure: I don't mind some JB, but it takes some doing to make him sound hardcore and authentic)
  19. How exactly is he "off the grid" and on the net at the same time?
  20. I didn't care too much for Spike Lee's "Summer of Sam" movie.
  21. 4-12-78 Eyes for me. and one more hour to go at work...
